Our research begins with a theoretical critique of the social capital literature, and then focuses on Old Harbor, Alaska. In this remote outpost, mainly populated by Alutiiq people, all entrepreneurs ...self–identified as Euro–Americans or multi–ethnic, not Alutiiq. Although Alutiiq people have abundant social capital, which they employed for economic purposes, they did not employ their social capital for commercial entrepreneurship. Our findings suggest that social capital promotes entrepreneurship only when supportive cultural capital is in place.

There has been a significant increase in scholarly literature about female entrepreneurship in Africa. In order to take stock of the state of female entrepreneurship on that continent, this paper examines articles published in peer-reviewed journals over the period 1987 to 2019. Using a mixed embeddedness approach, the analysis of these articles shows how cultural, institutional, economic, political, and social contexts shape the resources and strategies used by female entrepreneurs, and in turn, the interactions between the contexts, resources, and strategies determine the outcomes of female entrepreneurship in Africa. We argue that the environments in which female entrepreneurs are embedded lead to the development of innovative strategies and ways of gaining access to diverse resources. More papers on female entrepreneurship in Africa were published between 2015 and 2019 than in the previous 27 years. A comprehensive analysis of the articles sampled for this systematic literature review has led to the development of new insights and opportunities for future research.

Growing interest in entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs) over the last 15 years has led to an increase in publications in academic journals. This new concept has become a central topic in entrepreneurship research; however, it remains atheoretical, static and broad. While several bibliometric and systematic literature reviews have developed a research agenda for EEs, a holistic framework that integrates sustainability factors with theories, methods and approaches is still needed. This study provides such a framework through a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review of high-quality contributions in this field. The results of a citation and network analysis using the co-occurrence, co-authorship, bibliographic coupling, and co-citation techniques, highlight the state of the art of research and distinguish three thematic clusters in the EE literature. A holistic framework is then developed by integrating sustainability factors into the EE literature, and several emerging directions for future research are highlighted.
Immigrant entrepreneurship has become a phenomenon of global interest. This paper reviews existing immigrant entrepreneurship literature in order to map out the major streams of research and identify ...widely used theories, methods, and contexts. To do this, the authors have reviewed 514 articles from academic journals. This paper highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches that transcend boundaries. The development and adoption of different theoretical frameworks, the use of multi-level methods, and the consideration of unexplored country contexts are among the authors’ recommendations for future research.

Business is dynamic and rapidly changing. Global markets were previously the playing field of multinational corporations (MNCs), while small and medium enterprises (SMEs) were local; however, the ...removal of imposed barriers and recent technological advances in manufacturing, transportation, and communications have indorsed SMEs and international entrepreneurs (IEs) global access. SMEs and IEs are increasingly fueling economic growth and innovation, and these trends are presenting both opportunities and challenges to both MNCs and SMEs in the global arena. This review systematically examines comparative SME and IE research, analyzing (after fine-tuning) 762 articles published in leading journals from 1992 to September 2018. Our bibliometric and systematic review classifies SME and IE research findings into three echelons: (i) subjects, (ii) theories, and (iii) methods.
When traditional marketing practices are unsuitable for small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurs have to unlearn traditional principles and replace them with new innovative thoughts and actions, ...such as entrepreneurial marketing (EM). This paper examines the impact of EM dimensions on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Kosovo. Findings reveal that respondents tend to be highly opportunity focused and understand the importance of resource leveraging. While value creation is seen as a very important entrepreneurial marketing dimension, respondents are reserved with respect to taking risks; furthermore, they do not tend to be proactive, innovative nor customer oriented. Finally, the limitations of the study and the suggestions for future research are provided.
Digital technologies permit a massive reduction of transaction costs. As a result, traditional social interactions that take place in the entrepreneurial ecosystem are disrupted and a new landscape ...emerges. Digital platforms are the organizational form that benefit most from reductions in transaction costs; they take a prominent advantage from their ability to scout worldwide emergent knowledge, as well their ability to match extraordinarily heterogenous demands with dedicated supply. Digital platforms shape social interactions and the ways value is created in the global economy. As such, they are becoming the cornerstone of the digital entrepreneurship ecosystem. This special issue highlights some of the key features of the renewal of social interactions in the digital entrepreneurship ecosystem and opens up avenues for future research.

Les technologies numériques entrainent une réduction massive des coûts de transaction. En conséquence, les interactions sociales qui prennent traditionnellement place dans l'écosystème entrepreneurial sont bouleversées et un nouveau paysage émerge. Les plateformes numériques sont la forme organisationnelle qui bénéficie le plus de la réduction des coûts de transaction. Tout d'abord, elles tirent un avantage majeur de leur capacité à scruter dans le monde entier les connaissances émergentes. Ensuite, leur faculté à faire correspondre des demandes extraordinairement hétérogènes avec les offres dédiées est unique. Les plateformes numériques façonnent les nouvelles interactions sociales et la manière dont la valeur est créée dans l'économie mondiale. À ce titre, elles sont en train de devenir la pierre angulaire de l'écosystème de l'entrepreneuriat numérique. Ce numéro spécial met en lumière certaines des principales caractéristiques du renouvellement des interactions sociales dans l'écosystème de l'entrepreneuriat numérique et ouvre des pistes pour de futures recherches.

Digitalisation has become embedded in products and services, and it increasingly supports corporate business processes. However, few empirical studies have analysed the state of digitalisation and its implementation within companies, and the extant literature has painted an inconsistent picture concerning the effects of digitalisation. This survey-based study explores the diffusion of digitalisation, the advantages and difficulties in the practical transition to digitalisation, and its impact on performance. The sample includes Italian listed companies across diverse industries. The results highlight the still embryonic adoption of digital tools to support daily company operations; however, the impacts of digitalisation on company performance are noticeable. This research contributes to the literature on digitalisation and performance, breaks new ground by focusing on listed companies, and has implications for management investment in digitalisation for value creation.

Environmental and social issues have become increasingly important both at operating and strategic levels. Enterprises must integrate sustainability within their strategies. This implementation should be supported by different managerial tools and digital technologies. The latter is central in supporting sustainability implementation and conversion, and therefore, the interaction between digitalization and sustainability can unlock higher potential. Consequently, this study mainly aimed to understand the link between digitalization, sustainability, and performance in the Italian context. Our findings reveal a significant relationship between digitalization, sustainability, and profitability performance and that when positive results are achieved under the environmental and social lens, economic performance also improves. Our study highlights the role of enterprise size and its impact on financial and sustainable performance, thus addressing the gaps in the literature.
