Frequency of fog events together with fog water chemical composition, pH, conductivity and liquid water content have systematically been measured from the end of the 1980's at the field station of ...San Pietro Capofiume, in the eastern Po Valley, Northern Italy. In agreement with what has been observed in other regions in Europe, fog frequency (visibility < 1 km) has decreased over the last three decades. Ionic strength and conductivity of fog samples also decreased over the period indicating a reduction of the ionic load of the droplets. Specifically, the three major inorganic ions (NH4+, SO42−, NO3−), accounting for 86% of the total fog water ionic strength, show a decreasing trend in concentration over the period, which can be linked to the decreasing trend of NH3, SO2 and NOx emissions registered in northern Italy over the same period. Sulphate exhibits the highest relative decrease (76%). Seasonal volume-weighted means of pH show an increasing trend over the observed period. The available data of total water-soluble organic matter concentrations indicate that organic compounds represent a considerable fraction (25% on average) of the total solute mass of fog water. Fog water samples often contain suspended insoluble particles, which were collected by filtering fog water through quartz fibre filters. EC-OC analysis performed on the filters collected over a four-year period, show that the sum of elemental carbon (EC) and water-insoluble organic mass accounts on average for 46%–56% of the total suspended material mass. Insoluble carbonaceous material is composed mainly of organic matter, with EC accounting on average only for 19% of the insoluble carbon.

The organic chemical composition of atmospheric submicron particles in the marine boundary layer was characterized over the northeast Atlantic Ocean in summer 2006, during the season of phytoplankton ...blooms, in the frame of the Marine Aerosol Production (MAP) experiment. First measurements of water‐insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) in marine aerosol particles by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy showed that it is structurally similar to lipids, resembling the organic fraction of sea spray formed during bubble‐bursting experiments. The composition of the water‐soluble organic carbon (WSOC) fraction was investigated by liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry and by 1D‐ and 2D‐NMR spectroscopy, and showed a less hydrophilic fraction containing traces of fatty acids and rich of alkanoic acids formed by lipid degradation, and a more hydrophilic fraction, containing more functionalized species encompassing short‐chain aliphatic acids and sulfate esters of hydroxyl‐carboxylic acids. The more oxidized fraction of WSOC accounts for the oxidized organic aerosol components, which can form by either gas‐to‐particle conversion or extensive chemical aging of lipid‐containing primary particles, as also suggested by the parallel measurements using online mass spectrometric techniques (presented in a companion paper), showing oxidized organic substances internally mixed with sea salt particles. These measurements are also compared with online measurements using an Aerosol Time‐Of‐Flight Mass Spectrometer (ATOFMS) and Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS). Given the large variability in the chemical composition of marine organic aerosol particles, a multitechnique approach is recommended to reduce method‐dependent categorizations and oversimplifications and to improve the comparability with the results obtained in different oceanic areas.

Although biogas production can have some benefits, there is a research gap on potential influence of biogas plant emissions on local air quality, thus an accurate and comprehensive evaluation of ...impacts of this technology is needed. This study deals with this issue by means of a characterisation of air pollution near an industrial area including a biogas production (from biomass) and combustion plant located in South Italy. The methodology consists in advanced statistical analysis on concentration of gaseous pollutants, particles concentration and size distribution in number and mass, and PM2.5 chemical composition. High-temporal resolution measurements, supported by ancillary meteorological parameters, and source apportionment of PM2.5 using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) receptor model, are performed. The integrated approach provides the emissive picture consisting in different anthropogenic sources (i.e. traffic, biomass burning, and industrial facilities) with particular focus on biogas plant emissions. Results showed that CO and nitrogen oxides were influenced by vehicular traffic and biomass combustion, however, a contribution of the plant to NO was observed. SO2 was influenced mainly by transport from the industrial zone, but a second local contribution compatible with the emissions of the biogas plant was detected. Number particle concentrations were analysed in four size ranges: nanoparticles (D < 0.05 μm), ultrafine particles (D < 0.3 μm), accumulation (0.3 < D < 1 μm) and coarse particles (D > 1 μm). Nanoparticles and ultrafine particles were mainly influenced by vehicular traffic and biomass burning, instead, a contribution of the plant was individuated in the accumulation mode. PMF5 identified the contribution of six sources: crustal (14.7% ± 2.1% of measured PM2.5); marine aerosol (aged) (12.9% ± 2.3%); biomass burning (32.8% ± 1.4%); secondary sulphate (19.7% ± 2.4%); primary industrial emissions (5.4% ± 2.3%); traffic and secondary nitrate (17.0% ± 3.9%). The plant is likely to contribute to both sources, the industrial and the traffic plus secondary nitrate.

Size‐segregated marine aerosols were collected at Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station (Ireland) during spring and autumn 2002 corresponding with the phytoplankton bloom periods in the North ...Atlantic. Strict control of the sampling, air mass back trajectory analysis, and analysis of pollutant tracers allowed the selection of a set of samples representative of clean marine conditions. A comprehensive chemical characterization of both (1) water‐soluble and water‐insoluble organic fraction and (2) water‐soluble inorganic ions was performed. The selected samples illustrated a consistent picture in terms of chemical composition. The supermicron mode predominantly comprises sea‐salt aerosol with a mass concentration of 10.16 ± 0.80 μg m−3, the remainder being non‐sea‐salt (nss) sulphate, 0.03 ± 0.01 μg m−3, and nitrate, 0.13 ± 0.04 μg m−3. By comparison, the mass of sea salt, nss sulphate, and nitrate in the submicron mode is found to be 0.39 ± 0.08 μg m−3, 0.26 ± 0.04 μg m−3, and 0.02 ± 0.01 μg m−3, respectively. Water‐soluble organic carbon (WSOC) is observed in the submicron mode with a mass concentration of 0.25 ± 0.04 μg m−3, comparable to that of nss sulphate, and in the supermicron mode with a mass concentration of 0.17 ± 0.04 μg m−3. The WSOC to total carbon (TC) ratio is found to be 0.20 ± 0.12 for the submicron fraction and 0.29 ± 0.08 for the supermicron fraction, while the black carbon (BC) to TC ratio is, on average, 0.032 ± 0.001 for both aerosol modes. The remaining carbon, water‐insoluble organic carbon, contributes 0.66 ± 0.11 μg m−3 and 0.26 ± 0.06 μg m−3 to the submicron and supermicron modes, respectively and, thus, represents the dominant submicron aerosol species. Furthermore, the WSOC chemical composition comprises mainly aliphatic and only partially oxidized species and humic‐like substances, resulting in appreciable surface‐active properties. The observed organic matter chemical features (size‐dependent concentration, hydrophobic nature of a substantial fraction of the organic matter, and low oxidized and surface‐active WSOC species) are consistent with the hypothesis of a primary marine source; bubble‐bursting processes, occurring at the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean during phytoplankton blooms, effectively transfer organic matter into marine aerosol particles, particularly enriching the fine‐aerosol fraction.
