The performance of biological hydrolysis (BH) pretreatment on municipal secondary sludge was evaluated in this study. During 6-day BH at 42°C (BH42), soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) increased from 175.2±38.2mg/L to 3314.5±683.4mg/L; the dominant volatile fatty acid (VFA) was acetic acid, and its concentration increased from 41.5±2.1mg/L to 786.0±133.2mg/L. The extracted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from untreated secondary sludge contained three main fractions, and Fraction I gradually decreased from 133.9kDa to 24.9kDa during 6-day BH42. The BH pre-treatment at 42°C and 55°C both achieved more than 4-log reduction of total coliforms and 3-log reduction of E. coli. The BH pretreated secondary sludge at 15-day biochemical methane potential (BMP) test was comparable with the untreated secondary sludge after 30-day BMP, showing a significant enhancement on the acceleration of biogas production by BH pretreatment.
Weyl semimetals are a class of materials that can be regarded as three-dimensional analogs of graphene upon breaking time-reversal or inversion symmetry. Electrons in a Weyl semimetal behave as Weyl ...fermions, which have many exotic properties, such as chiral anomaly and magnetic monopoles in the crystal momentum space. The surface state of a Weyl semimetal displays pairs of entangled Fermi arcs at two opposite surfaces. However, the existence of Weyl semimetals has not yet been proved experimentally. Here, we report the experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs by observing Fermi arcs formed by its surface states using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our first-principles calculations, which match remarkably well with the experimental results, further confirm that TaAs is a Weyl semimetal.
Robust wall apposition for flow-diverter stents may be important for endothelialization. Using a large series of experimental aneurysms treated with the Pipeline Embolization Device, the objectives ...of this study were to 1) assess interobserver agreement for the evaluation of wall apposition on posttreatment DSA and evaluate its association with aneurysm occlusion, and 2) measure the relationship between wall apposition assessed with histology and aneurysm occlusion rate after treatment.
Saccular aneurysms were created in 41 rabbits and treated with the Pipeline Embolization Device. DSA was performed just after the deployment of the device and at follow-up. Three investigators independently graded wall apposition on posttreatment DSA as good or poor. A histopathologist blinded to the angiographic results graded the wall apposition on histologic samples. We examined the correlation between angiographic occlusion and wall apposition with histology and angiography.
Wall apposition evaluated on histology was strongly associated with saccular aneurysm occlusion. Sensitivity and specificity of wall apposition to predict complete occlusion at follow-up were 76.9% and 84.0%, respectively, with an overall accuracy of 81.6%. In this experimental study, DSA was suboptimal to assess flow-diverter apposition, with moderate interobserver agreement and low accuracy.
Good wall apposition is strongly associated with complete occlusion after flow-diverter therapy. In this study, DSA was suboptimal for assessing wall apposition of flow-diverter stents. These findings suggest that improved tools for assessing flow diverter-stent wall apposition are highly relevant.
In superconductors, electrons are paired and condensed into the ground state. An impurity can break the electron pairs into quasiparticles with energy states inside the superconducting gap. The ...characteristics of such in-gap states reflect accordingly the properties of the superconducting ground state. A zero-energy in-gap state is particularly noteworthy, because it can be the consequence of non-trivial pairing symmetry or topology. Here we use scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy to demonstrate that an isotropic zero-energy bound state with a decay length of ∼10 Å emerges at each interstitial iron impurity in superconducting Fe(Te,Se). More noticeably, this zero-energy bound state is robust against a magnetic field up to 8 T, as well as perturbations by neighbouring impurities. Such a spectroscopic feature has no natural explanation in terms of impurity states in superconductors with s-wave symmetry, but bears all the characteristics of the Majorana bound state proposed for topological superconductors, indicating that the superconducting state and the scattering mechanism of the interstitial iron impurities in Fe(Te,Se) are highly unconventional.
Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) responds to diverse cellular stresses, and regulates oncogenic activities (for example, proliferation, survival and migration) through direct transcriptional ...regulation or protein-protein interactions. Although aberrant ATF3 expression is frequently found in human cancers, the role of ATF3 in tumorigenesis is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that ATF3 suppresses the development of prostate cancer induced by knockout of the tumor suppressor Pten in mouse prostates. Whereas the oncogenic stress elicited by Pten loss induced ATF3 expression in prostate epithelium, we found that ATF3 deficiency increased cell proliferation and promoted cell survival, leading to early onset of mouse prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and the progression of prostate lesions to invasive adenocarcinoma. Importantly, the loss of ATF3 promoted activation of the oncogenic AKT signaling evidenced by high levels of phosphorylated AKT and S6 proteins in ATF3-null prostate lesions. In line with these in vivo results, knockdown of ATF3 expression in human prostate cancer cells by single guided RNA-mediated targeting activated AKT and increased matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression. Our results thus link ATF3 to the AKT signaling, and suggest that ATF3 is a tumor suppressor for the major subset of prostate cancers harboring dysfunctional Pten.

This paper proposed a model for solving the investment decisions amidst uncertainty in the low-carbon transition toward renewable energy. The real option method is used and numerous influencing factors are considered, including the market price of electricity, fossil fuel cost, carbon dioxide price, investment cost and long-term changes of feed-in tariff policy associated with renewable energy. The investment decisions related to the transition from a coal-fired power plant to a solar photovoltaic power plant in China have been analyzed in detail. The results indicate the optimal transition investment strategy and elucidate the effects of multiple factors on the investment strategy. This provides a clear suggestion for both the government and investor how to scientifically address uncertainty and make optimal investment decision to accelerate the low-carbon transition.
Image segmentation has made great progress in recent years, but the annotation required for image segmentation is usually expensive, especially for remote sensing images. To solve this problem, we ...explore semi-supervised learning methods and appropriately utilize a large amount of unlabeled data to improve the performance of remote sensing image segmentation. This paper proposes a method for remote sensing image segmentation based on semi-supervised learning. We first design a Consistency Regularization (CR) training method for semi-supervised training, then employ the new learned model for Average Update of Pseudo-label (AUP), and finally combine pseudo labels and strong labels to train semantic segmentation network. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on three remote sensing datasets, achieving better performance without more labeled data. Extensive experiments show that our semi-supervised method can learn the latent information from the unlabeled data to improve the segmentation performance.
A Weyl semimetal possesses spin-polarized band-crossings, called Weyl nodes, connected by topological surface arcs. The low-energy excitations near the crossing points behave the same as massless ...Weyl fermions, leading to exotic properties like chiral anomaly. To have the transport properties dominated by Weyl fermions, Weyl nodes need to locate nearly at the chemical potential and enclosed by pairs of individual Fermi surfaces with non-zero Fermi Chern numbers. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculation, here we show that TaP is a Weyl semimetal with only a single type of Weyl fermions, topologically distinguished from TaAs where two types of Weyl fermions contribute to the low-energy physical properties. The simple Weyl fermions in TaP are not only of fundamental interests but also of great potential for future applications. Fermi arcs on the Ta-terminated surface are observed, which appear in a different pattern from that on the As-termination in TaAs and NbAs.
