Many benefits accrue to an occupation that is described as a “profession,” including the ability to influence public debate, such as the current one over health policy in the United States. The label ...of profession frequently enhances the status, prestige, power, and legitimacy of an occupation, which usually translates into additional resources and power. This article examines the current status of the occupation—hospital administration—with respect to the literature pertaining to the concept of a profession. Hospital administration is assessed in terms of its relation to three common attributes associated with professions: collegial traits, knowledge base, and service orientation. The analysis indicates that there are important obstacles to be overcome before hospital administration can be considered a profession based on these three attributes.

We present the technical design, performance, and stability test results for an LED-based pulser system. The system is used for the Run II Muon Scintillation counters at Fermilab's DØ Experiment. ...Accurate timing information from the scintillation counters is imperative for the proper performance of the muon triggers. The LED Pulser System served in the commissioning of the counters and continues to serve in the monitoring of the performance and the gains of the PMTs.
A detailed description of the system is presented, as well as the results of tests on individual components and integrated system. From the test results, the DØ LED Pulser System tracks the PMT gains with a precision of 0.2%.
AIM: To evaluate a new single-operator mini-endoscope, Spyglass, for its performance, feasibility and safety in the management of pancreaticobiliary disease.
METHODS: In a multicenter retrospective ...analysis of patients undergoing intraductal endoscopy, we evaluated 128 patients (71 men, mean age 57.6 years). Indications were therapeutic (TX) in 72 (56%) and diagnostic (DX) in 56 (44%).
RESULTS: Peroral endoscopy was performed in 121 and percutaneous in seven. TX indications included CBD stones in 41, PD stones in six, and biliary strictures in 25. DX indications included abnormal LFT's in 15, abnormal imaging in 38 and cholangiocarcinoma staging in three. Visualization of the stone(s) was considered good in 31, fair in six, and poor in four. Advancement of the electrohydraulic lithotripsy probe was not possible in three patients and proper targeting of the lesion was partial in four patients. A holmium laser was used successfully in three patients. Ductal clearance was achieved in 37 patients after one procedure and in four patients after two procedures.Diagnosis of biliary strictures was modified in 20/29 and confirmed to be malignant in 10/23. Of the modified patients, no diagnosis was available in 17. Spyglass demonstrated malignancy in 8/17 and non-malignancy in nine. Suspected pathology by imaging studies and abnormal LFT's was modified in 43/63 (66%). Staging of cholangiocarcinoma demonstrated multicentric cholangiocarcinoma in 2/3. There was no morbidity associated with the use of Spyglass.
CONCLUSION: Spyglass Spyscope is a first generation, single operator miniature endoscope that can evaluate and treat various biliary and pancreatic tract diseases.

A calorimeter with optical quartz fibers embedded into an absorber matrix was proposed for the small angle region of the CMS detector at LHC (CERN). This type of calorimeter is expected to be ...radiation hard and to produce extremely fast signal. Some results from beam tests of the quartz fiber calorimeter prototype are presented.
We examine properties of tt¯ candidate events in lepton+jets final states to establish the helicities of W bosons in t→W+b decays. Our analysis is based on a direct calculation of a probability ...density for each event to correspond to a tt¯ final state, as a function of the helicity of the W boson. Using the 125 events/pb of data collected by the DØ experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron pp¯ Collider at s=1.8 TeV, we obtain a longitudinal helicity fraction F0=0.56±0.31, consistent with the prediction of F0=0.70 from the standard model.

The authors describe the design, construction and performance of the upgraded D0 muon system for Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Significant improvements have been made to the major ...subsystems of the D0 muon detector: trigger scintillation counters, tracking detectors, and electronics. The Run II central muon detector has a new scintillation counter system inside the iron toroid and an improved scintillation counter system outside the iron toroid. In the forward region, new scintillation counter and tracking systems have been installed. Extensive shielding has been added in the forward region. A large fraction of the muon system electronics is also new.
