Introduction. Polytrauma patients are expected to have a higher risk of mortality than that obtained by the summation of expected mortality owing to their individual injuries. Subsequent ...life-threatening posttraumatic complications are associated with overproduction of proinflammatory mediators (e.g. cytokines, chemokines) and the critical imbalance of cell-regulated innate immunity. Material and methods. The present study is aimed to identify a possible relationship between NT-proBNP, hs-CRP and OXSR1 biochemical markers in polytrauma patients, both by bibliographic research and quantitative analysis and statistics of some parameters of interest in lot of 46 patients. Results and discussions. The correlation between hsCRP and the inflammatory response after trauma is well-known and well documented in literature, so the negative correlation between hsCRP and OXSR1 that resulted from our analysis is of great significance resulting in a potentially new biomarker to be further studied and used in determining the possible outcome of polytrauma patients. Conclusion. Although OXSR1 is a new in the field of polytrauma patients, because is negatively correlated with hsCRP and the clinical evolution of the patients we think that OXSR1 is a good biomarker to further in investigate and may be used in determining the clinical progress of the polytrauma patients.
Constructivism is the metaethical position stating that although we cannot have direct access to moral facts, we can still come up with a set of principles that can be justified and that ought to be ...respected by individuals. The strength of these moral principles derives from the fact that they are the result of a procedure respecting certain desirable conditions. Constructivism concerns the methodology of political philosophy, being preoccupied with the process of generating and justifying moral principles. In this review article I present the main contentions of constructivism (focusing especially on the Kantian constructivism advanced by Rawls and Scanlon), describe its positioning on the realist–antirealist axis, and compare it with its main competitor in the field of metaethical views, intuitionism. I dedicate a separate section to the method of reflective equilibrium, which represents an important part of several metaethical accounts, be they constructivist, realist, or intuitionist. I show how reflective equilibrium represents the main instrument constructivists can employ in order to capture the appeal of relying on intuitions in moral theorizing, without leaning toward intuitionism. Toward the end of the article I present G. A. Cohen’s (2003, 2008) criticism of constructivism. I focus on the replies Ronzoni and Valentini (2008), Hall (2013), de Maagt (2014, 2016) and Rossi (2016) give to Cohen, ending with a criticism of my own.
Some of the main proponents of constitutional economics consider this spin-off from public choice to be a research program, following Lakatos. In this paper I intend to show how constitutional ...economics can avoid becoming a degenerating program by focusing on its normative dimension. More specifically, I argue that the lessons of models developed within this research program can, and should be applied to political philosophy. However, this instance of epistemic imperialism is bound to have a significant effect on the auxiliary assumptions of constitutional economics, which will have to elaborate new hypotheses in order to avoid some of the counterintuitive implications to which it leads under its current positive heuristic. Throughout the paper, I focus mainly on the Leviathan model of government growth put forward by Brennan and Buchanan.
In this paper we present a series of four cases of multiple trauma patients that associated pelvic ring fractures. The objective was to show the complexity of this pathology, the therapeutical ...efforts needed to treat such patients and the very different end results such case may have. Polytrauma is still a serious public health issue because of the increased mortality and morbidity in the young population, which leads to a significant socio-economic impact.
An important branch of neo-republicanism holds that freedom as non-domination is the supreme ideal that should be pursued in a polity. In this paper I set out to better specify what neo-republicanism ...has to say about education. I propose a series of reforms that ought to track the common avowable interests of children, focusing on two important dimensions: i) establishing a proper institutional framework through which children can effectively influence decisions that will in turn affect them; and ii) how the civic education curricula should be modified so that the institutional framework will be upheld by virtuous future citizens. I then turn to showing how we can employ the neo-republican framework in order to criticise certain lacunae of educational systems and to improve upon these in a manner that would be in line with the desideratum of freedom as non-domination. The particular example that I focus on is that of Romania, a country whose educational legislation contains some minimal stipulations regarding civic education and pupils' involvement in the decision-making process. Nonetheless, such stipulations either do not go far enough or are indeterminate, which might make them susceptible to implementation in a way that would be detrimental to the pupils' common avowable interests.
In this paper we aim to examine a novel view on distributive justice, i.e.
limitarianism
, which claims that it is morally impermissible to be rich. Our main goal is to assess the two arguments ...provided by Ingrid Robeyns in favour of limitarianism, namely the democratic argument and the argument from unmet urgent needs and the two distinct limitarian views which these arguments give rise to. We claim that strong limitarianism, which is supported by the democratic argument, should be rejected as it fails to fully instantiate the value of political equality, while having some other unattractive implications as well. By contrast, we argue that weak limitarianism, which is supported by the argument from unmet urgent needs, should be endorsed, albeit in a qualified version which also takes responsibility constraints into consideration.
