To determine the effect of intravenous (IV) low-osmolality iodinated contrast material (LOCM) on the development of post-computed tomography (CT) acute kidney injury (AKI), stratified by pre-CT ...estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), in patients with stable renal function.
Institutional review board approval was obtained and patient consent waived for this HIPAA-compliant, retrospective study. CT examinations performed over a 10-year period on unique adult inpatients with sufficient serum creatinine (SCr) data and stable renal function (difference between baseline and pre-CT SCr within 0.3 mg/dL and 50% of baseline) were identified. A 1:1 propensity score matched cohort analysis with multivariate analysis of effects was performed with post-CT AKI as the primary outcome measure (8826 nonenhanced and 8826 IV contrast agent-enhanced CT studies in 17 652 patients). Propensity matching was performed with respect to likelihood of receiving IV contrast material (19 tested covariates). Post-CT AKI with Acute Kidney Injury Network SCr criteria was the primary endpoint. A stepwise multivariate conditional logistic regression model was performed to identify the effect of IV LOCM on post-CT AKI.
After 1:1 propensity matching, IV LOCM had a significant effect on the development of post-CT AKI (P = .04). This risk increased with decreases in pre-CT eGFR (≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m(2): odds ratio, 1.00; 95% confidence interval: 0.86, 1.16; 45-59 mL/min/1.73 m(2): odds ratio, 1.06; 95% confidence interval: 0.82, 1.38; 30-44 mL/min/1.73 m(2): odds ratio, 1.40; 95% confidence interval: 1.00, 1.97; <30 mL/min/1.73 m(2): odds ratio, 2.96; 95% confidence interval: 1.22, 7.17).
IV LOCM is a nephrotoxic risk factor in patients with a stable eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73 m(2), with a trend toward significance at 30-44 mL/min/1.73 m(2). IV LOCM does not appear to be a nephrotoxic risk factor in patients with a pre-CT eGFR of 45 mL/min/1.73 m(2) or greater.
For honey bees (Apis mellifera), colony maintenance and growth are highly dependent on worker foragers obtaining sufficient resources from flowering plants year round. Despite the importance of ...floral diversity for proper bee nutrition, urban development has drastically altered resource availability and diversity for these important pollinators. Therefore, understanding the floral resources foraged by bees in urbanized areas is key to identifying and promoting plants that enhance colony health in those environments. In this study, we identified the pollen foraged by bees in four developed areas of the U.S., and explored whether there were spatial or temporal differences in the types of floral sources of pollen used by honey bees in these landscapes. To do this, pollen was collected every month for up to one year from colonies located in developed (urban and suburban) sites in California, Texas, Florida, and Michigan, except during months of pollen dearth or winter. Homogenized pollen samples were acetolyzed and identified microscopically to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Once identified, each pollen type was classified into a frequency category based on its overall relative abundance. Species richness and diversity indices were also calculated and compared across states and seasons. We identified up to 64 pollen types belonging to 39 plant families in one season (California). Species richness was highest in CA and lowest in TX, and was highest during spring in every state. In particular, "predominant" and "secondary" pollen types belonged to the families Arecaceae, Sapindaceae, Anacardiaceae, Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Fabaceae, Fagaceae, Lythraceae, Myrtaceae, Rhamnaceae, Rosaceae, Rutaceae, Saliaceae, and Ulmaceae. This study will help broaden our understanding of honey bee foraging ecology and nutrition in urban environments, and will help promote the use of plants that serve the dual purpose of providing aesthetic value and nutritious forage for honey bee colonies placed in developed landscapes.
Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) populations face declines commonly attributed to pesticide, pathogen, and parasite stress. One way beekeepers combat these stressors is by providing supplemental ...protein diets to honey bee colonies to ensure adequate colony nutrition. However Nosema spp., a microsporidian parasite of the honey bee, is thought to be associated closely with a colony's nutritional intake, thus possibly negating any benefit the bees otherwise would have received from a nutritional supplement. Through three objectives, we examined how adult bees' consumption of wildflower pollen or commercial pollen substitute diets affected Nosema levels in the bees' midguts. For our first objective, we investigated how method of inoculation with Nosema affects infection levels in inoculated bees. Bees were infected with spores of Nosema four days after emergence. On day 15, bees were collected from the cages and Nosema spores were quantified. We found that inoculation through the pollen diet resulted in the highest Nosema levels in inoculated bees. In our second and third objectives, we provided the test diets to caged, newly emerged bees for a period of 15 days. Bees consuming pollen and a sucrose solution had more Nosema in their midguts than did bees consuming the sucrose solution alone (control). The overall volume of diet consumed by the bees did not correlate with the level of Nosema in their midguts. The level of Nosema was higher in bees fed certain commercial pollen substitute diets than in bees fed wildflower pollen. Our study illustrates how providing nutritional supplements to adult honey bees can impact the intensity of Nosema in their midguts.
Abstract
Varroa destructor is among the greatest biological threats to western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) health worldwide. Beekeepers routinely use chemical treatments to control this parasite, ...though overuse and mismanagement of these treatments have led to widespread resistance in Varroa populations. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an ecologically based, sustainable approach to pest management that relies on a combination of control tactics that minimize environmental impacts. Herein, we provide an in-depth review of the components of IPM in a Varroa control context. These include determining economic thresholds for the mite, identification of and monitoring for Varroa, prevention strategies, and risk conscious treatments. Furthermore, we provide a detailed review of cultural, mechanical, biological, and chemical control strategies, both longstanding and emerging, used against Varroa globally. For each control type, we describe all available treatments, their efficacies against Varroa as described in the primary scientific literature, and the obstacles to their adoption. Unfortunately, reliable IPM protocols do not exist for Varroa due to the complex biology of the mite and strong reliance on chemical control by beekeepers. To encourage beekeeper adoption, a successful IPM approach to Varroa control in managed colonies must be an improvement over conventional control methods and include cost-effective treatments that can be employed readily by beekeepers. It is our intention to provide the most thorough review of Varroa control options available, ultimately framing our discussion within the context of IPM. We hope this article is a call-to-arms against the most damaging pest managed honey bee colonies face worldwide.
The parasitic mite Varroa destructor has a significant worldwide impact on bee colony health. In the absence of control measures, parasitized colonies invariably collapse within 3 years. The ...synthetic pyrethroids tau-fluvalinate and flumethrin have proven very effective at managing this mite within apiaries, but intensive control programs based mainly on one active ingredient have led to many reports of pyrethroid resistance. In Europe, a modification of leucine to valine at position 925 (L925V) of the V. destructor voltage-gated sodium channel was correlated with resistance, the mutation being found at high frequency exclusively in hives with a recent history of pyrethroid treatment. Here, we identify two novel mutations, L925M and L925I, in tau-fluvalinate resistant V. destructor collected at seven sites across Florida and Georgia in the Southeastern region of the USA. Using a multiplexed TaqMan® allelic discrimination assay, these mutations were found to be present in 98% of the mites surviving tau-fluvalinate treatment. The mutations were also found in 45% of the non-treated mites, suggesting a high potential for resistance evolution if selection pressure is applied. The results from a more extensive monitoring programme, using the Taqman® assay described here, would clearly help beekeepers with their decision making as to when to include or exclude pyrethroid control products and thereby facilitate more effective mite management programmes.
The parasitic mite Varroa destructor is the greatest single driver of the global honey bee health decline. Better understanding of the association of this parasite and its host is critical to ...developing sustainable management practices. Our work shows that this parasite is not consuming hemolymph, as has been the accepted view, but damages host bees by consuming fat body, a tissue roughly analogous to the mammalian liver. Both hemolymph and fat body in honey bees were marked with fluorescent biostains. The fluorescence profile in the guts of mites allowed to feed on these bees was very different from that of the hemolymph of the host bee but consistently matched the fluorescence profile unique to the fat body. Via transmission electron microscopy, we observed externally digested fat body tissue in the wounds of parasitized bees. Mites in their reproductive phase were then fed a diet composed of one or both tissues. Mites fed hemolymph showed fitness metrics no different from the starved control. Mites fed fat body survived longer and produced more eggs than those fed hemolymph, suggesting that fat body is integral to their diet when feeding on brood as well. Collectively, these findings strongly suggest that Varroa are exploiting the fat body as their primary source of sustenance: a tissue integral to proper immune function, pesticide detoxification, overwinter survival, and several other essential processes in healthy bees. These findings underscore a need to revisit our understanding of this parasite and its impacts, both direct and indirect, on honey bee health.
Managed honey bee colony losses are of concern in the USA and globally. This survey, which documents the rate of colony loss in the USA during the 2015-2016 season, is the tenth report of winter ...losses, and the fifth of summer and annual losses. Our results summarize the responses of 5725 valid survey respondents, who collectively managed 427,652 colonies on 1 October 2015, an estimated 16.1% of all managed colonies in the USA. Responding beekeepers reported a total annual colony loss of 40.5% 95% CI 39.8-41.1% between 1 April 2015 and 1 April 2016. Total winter colony loss was 26.9% 95% CI 26.4-27.4% while total summer colony loss was 23.6% 95% CI 23.0-24.1%, making this the third consecutive year when summer losses have approximated to winter losses. Across all operation types, 32.3% of responding beekeepers reported no winter losses. Whilst the loss rate in the winter of 2015-2016 was amongst the lowest winter losses recorded over the ten years this survey has been conducted, 59.0% (n = 3378) of responding beekeepers had higher losses than they deemed acceptable.
Dark-matter-only simulations predict that dark matter halos have steep, cuspy inner density profiles, while observations of dwarf galaxies find a range of inner slopes that are often much shallower. ...There is debate whether this discrepancy can be explained by baryonic feedback or if it may require modified dark matter models. In Paper I of this series, we obtained high-resolution integral field H observations for 26 dwarf galaxies with M* = 108.1−109.7 . We derived rotation curves from our observations, which we use here to construct mass models. We model the total mass distribution as the sum of a generalized Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) dark matter halo and the stellar and gaseous components. Our analysis of the slope of the dark matter density profile focuses on the inner 300-800 pc, chosen based on the resolution of our data and the region resolved by modern hydrodynamical simulations. The inner slope measured using ionized and molecular gas tracers is consistent, and it is additionally robust to the choice of stellar mass-to-light ratio. We find a range of dark matter profiles, including both cored and cuspy slopes, with an average of , shallower than the NFW profile, but steeper than those typically observed for lower-mass galaxies with M* ∼ 107.5 . Simulations that reproduce the observed slopes in those lower-mass galaxies also produce slopes that are too shallow for galaxies in our mass range. We therefore conclude that supernova feedback models do not yet provide a fully satisfactory explanation for the observed trend in dark matter slopes.
Vairimorpha (formerly Nosema) apis and V. ceranae are microsporidian pathogens that are of concern for managed honey bee colonies. Multiple treatments have been proposed to be effective in reducing ...the prevalence and intensity of Vairimorpha spp. infections. Here, we test the efficacy of these products in one lab-based experiment and three field experiments. In the lab experiment, we found no reductions in Vairimorpha spp. prevalence (proportion of individuals infected with Vairimorpha spp.) or intensity (number of Vairimorpha spp. spores per individual), but we did find a decrease in honey bee survival after treatment with Fumagilin-B, Honey-B-Healthy®, and Nozevit Plus. The first field experiment showed increased Vairimorpha spp. intensity in colonies treated with Fumagilin-B and HiveAlive® compared to a negative control (sucrose syrup alone). The second field experiment showed a weak reduction in Vairimorpha spp. intensity after 3 weeks post treatment with Fumagilin-B compared to Nozevit. However, Vairimorpha spp. intensity returned to levels comparable to those of other treatment groups after 5 weeks post treatment and remained similar to those of other groups for the duration of the experiment. The final field trial showed no positive or negative effects of treatment with Fumagilin-B or Nosevit on Vairimorpha spp. prevalence or intensity. These findings raise questions regarding the efficacy of the products currently being used by beekeepers to control Vairimorpha spp. We argue that the observed reduction of Vairimorpha spp. is more likely relevant to the phenology of spore prevalence and intensity in honey bee colonies than to chemical treatment.
The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, is an invasive pest that has spread globally. Western honey bees, Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae), are considered the most important host ...and infestations can lead to collapse of colonies. Larvae feed on honey, pollen, and brood inside the hive and leave the hive as postfeeding wandering larvae to pupate in the surrounding soil. Other host species include bumble bees, stingless bees, and solitary bees, all of which can facilitate small hive beetle reproduction and are used for greenhouse crop pollination worldwide. Here, we investigated if small hive beetles can complete their life cycle when soil is absent by pupating in plant root-supporting substrates commonly used in greenhouses. Wandering small hive beetle larvae were introduced into containers with coconut fiber, perlite, a mixture of both and stone wool substrates to investigate pupation success and development time. Sand was used as control substrate. In all but one substrate (perlite), small hive beetles developed into adults equally well as they did in the sand. Development time ranged between 23 and 37 d and was not different from that of the control. We showed that small hive beetles can pupate in greenhouse substrates. This could constitute a problem for greenhouse pollination as well as it could facilitate small hive beetle survival in areas which otherwise would be deemed unsuitable or marginal environments for small hive beetles to become established. Our study highlights the opportunistic nature of the small hive beetle as an invasive species.
