We investigate the performances of two ZnMoO4 scintillating crystals operated as bolometers, in view of a next generation experiment to search the neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo. We present the results of the α vs β/γ discrimination, obtained through the scintillation light as well as through the study of the shape of the thermal signal alone. The separation obtained at the 2615keV line of 208Tl is 8σ, using the heat-light scatter plot, while it exceeds 20σ using the shape of the thermal pulse alone. The achieved FWHM energy resolution ranges from 2.4keV (at 238keV) to 5.7keV (at 2615keV). The internal radioactive contaminations of the ZnMoO4 crystals were evaluated through a 407h background measurement. The obtained limit is <32μBq/kg for 228Th and 226Ra. These values were used for a Monte Carlo simulation aimed at evaluating the achievable background level of a possible, future array of enriched Zn100MoO4 crystals.

CALDER (Cryogenic wide-Area Light Detectors with Excellent Resolution) is a project for the development of large area phonon mediated KIDs (Kinetic Inductance Detectors), for the detection of ...Cherenkov radiation emitted in TeO2 bolometers to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ). The KIDs are superconducting detectors made of high quality factor superconducting resonators, which are coupled to a transmission line for signal readout. We designed and fabricated KIDs using aluminum. The Al thin films (40nm) were evaporated on Si(100) high resistivity silicon wafers using an electron beam evaporator in a HV chamber. In this work we report the steps of the fabrication process. All devices are made in direct-write using Electron Beam Lithography (EBL), positive tone resist poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA) and lift off process. In order to improve the sensitivity of the detectors we have started recently to use sub-stoichiometric TiN deposited by means of DC magnetron sputtering and we will optimize a different fabrication process.
Purpose
Few examples of the involvement of a single gene in idiopathic short stature have been described until now. Our aim was to identify the causative gene of proportionate short stature in a ...large family showing co-segregation of the phenotype with the reciprocal translocation t(10;15)(q22;q24).
Methods
FISH mapping was carried out with BACs and long-range PCR probes to identify the smallest genomic regions harboring the translocation breakpoints. Real-Time RT-PCR was performed in blood after pre-amplification of target genes cDNA.
Result
The affected family members presented with a final height of between − 2.41 and − 4.18 SDS and very mild skeletal dysmorphisms. Growth rates of the proband and of her cousin, whose childhood and pre-pubertal bone age corresponded to the chronological age, showed a poor growth spurt during treatment with rhGH. However, their adult height was greater than that of their untreated mothers, suggesting efficacy of GH therapy. Breakpoint mapping revealed that the translocation t(10;15)(q22.3;q26.1) disrupts, on 15q, the
ACAN
gene at intron 1, decreasing its transcriptional expression.
Conclusions
This is the first description of a chromosome rearrangement disrupting
ACAN
and leading to its haploinsufficiency.
ACAN
loss of function should be considered a potential underpinning of short patients who display a poor growth spurt and belong to families with autosomal dominant segregation of proportionate short stature. Besides this core phenotype, literature review suggests that advanced bone age, early onset osteochondritis dissecans, osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc disease as well as craniofacial dysmorphisms can be important suggestive phenotypes in affected families.
Organic scintillators are often chosen as radiation detectors for their fast decay time and their low Z, while inorganic ones are used when high light yields are required. In this paper we show that ...a para-terphenyl based detector has a blend of properties of the two categories that can be optimal for energy and position measurements of low-energy charged particles. Using 0.1% diphenylbutadiene doped para-terphenyl samples we measured a light attenuation length λ = 4.73 ±0.06 mm, a quenching factor for α particles Q α = (10.7 ±0.6), and a rejection power ranging between 3 - 11% for 660 keV photons, with respect to electrons of the same energy, depending on the signal threshold. A simulation based on FLUKA properly reproduces the experimental data distributions.

The goal of the cryogenic wide-area light detectors with excellent resolution project is the development of light detectors with large active area and noise energy resolution smaller than 20 eV RMS ...using phonon-mediated kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). The detectors are developed to improve the background suppression in large-mass bolometric experiments such as CUORE, via the double readout of the light and the heat released by particles interacting in the bolometers. In this work we present the fabrication process, starting from the silicon wafer arriving to the single chip. In the first part of the project, we designed and fabricated KID detectors using aluminum. Detectors are designed by means of state-of-the-art software for electromagnetic analysis (SONNET). The Al thin films (40 nm) are evaporated on high-quality, high-resistivity (> 10 kΩ cm) Si(100) substrates using an electron beam evaporator in a HV chamber. Detectors are patterned in direct-write mode, using electron beam lithography (EBL), positive tone resist poly-methyl methacrylate and lift-off process. Finally, the chip is diced into 20 × 20 mm

chips and assembled in a holder OFHC (oxygen-free high conductivity) copper using PTFE support. To increase the energy resolution of our detectors, we are changing the superconductor to sub-stoichiometric TiN (TiN

) deposited by means of DC magnetron sputtering. We are optimizing its deposition by means of DC magnetron reactive sputtering. For this kind of material, the fabrication process is subtractive and consists of EBL patterning through negative tone resist AR-N 7700 and deep reactive ion etching. Critical temperature of TiN
x
samples was measured in a dedicated cryostat.
First-episode psychosis (FEP) is a major life event and can have an adverse impact on the diagnosed individual and their families. The importance of intervening early and providing optimal treatments ...is widely acknowledged. In comparison to patient groups, literature is scarce on identifying treatment predictors and moderators of caregiver outcomes. This study aimed to identify pre-treatment characteristics predicting and/or moderating carer outcomes, based on data from a multi-element psychosocial intervention to FEP patients and carers (GET-UP PIANO trial).
Carer demography, type of family relationship, patient contact hours, pre-treatment carer burden, patient perceptions of parental caregiving and expressed emotion (EE) were selected, a priori, as potential predictors/moderators of carer burden and emotional distress at 9 months post treatment. Outcomes were analysed separately in mixed-effects random regression models.
Analyses were performed on 260 carers. Only patient perceptions of early maternal criticism predicted reports of lower carer burden at follow-up. However, multiple imputation analysis failed to confirm this result. For treatment moderators: higher levels of carer burden at baseline yielded greater reductions in carer emotional distress at follow-up in the experimental group compared with treatment as usual (TAU). Higher levels of perceived EE moderated greater reductions in carer reports of tension in experimental group, compared with TAU, at follow-up. In younger caregivers (<51 years old), there were greater reductions in levels of worry during the baseline to follow-up period, within the experimental group compared with TAU.
The study failed to identify significant treatment predictors of FEP carer outcomes. However, our preliminary findings suggest that optimal treatment outcomes for carers at first episode might be moderated by younger carer age, and carers reporting higher baseline levels of burden, and where patients perceive higher levels of negative effect from caregivers.
Hadrontherapy is an emerging technique in cancer therapy that uses beams of charged particles. To meet the improved capability of hadrontherapy in matching the dose release with the cancer position, ...new dose-monitoring techniques need to be developed and introduced into clinical use. The measurement of the fluxes of the secondary particles produced by the hadron beam is of fundamental importance in the design of any dose-monitoring device and is eagerly needed to tune Monte Carlo simulations. We report the measurements carried out with charged secondary particles produced from the interaction of a 80 MeV/u fully stripped carbon ion beam at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, Catania, with a poly-methyl methacrylate target. Charged secondary particles, produced at 90° with respect to the beam axis, have been tracked with a drift chamber, while their energy and time of flight have been measured by means of a LYSO scintillator. Secondary protons have been identified exploiting the energy and time-of-flight information, and their emission region has been reconstructed backtracking from the drift chamber to the target. Moreover, a position scan of the target indicates that the reconstructed emission region follows the movement of the expected Bragg peak position. Exploiting the reconstruction of the emission region, an accuracy on the Bragg peak determination in the submillimeter range has been obtained. The measured differential production rate for protons produced with E(Prod)(kin) > 83 MeV and emitted at 90° with respect to the beam line is dN(P)/(dN(C)dΩ) (E(Prod)(kin) > 83 MeV, θ = 90°) = (2.69 ± 0.08(stat) ± 0.12(sys)) × 10⁻⁴ sr⁻¹.
