We present a detailed stellar population analysis of 11 bright (H < 26.6) galaxies at z=9−11 (three spectroscopically confirmed) to constrain the chemical enrichment and growth of stellar mass of ...early galaxies. We use the flexible Bayesian spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code Prospector with a range of star-formation histories (SFHs), a flexible dust attenuation law and a self-consistent modeling of emission lines. This approach allows us to assess how different priors affect our results, and how well we can break degeneracies between dust attenuation, stellar ages, metallicity and emission lines using data which probe only the rest-frame ultraviolet to optical wavelengths. We measure a median observed ultraviolet spectral slope β= −1.87+0.35−0.43 for relatively massive star-forming galaxies (9<log(M?/M)<10), consistent with no change from z=4 to z=9−10 at these stellar masses, implying rapid enrichment. Our SED-fitting results are consistent with a star-forming main sequence with sub-linear slope (0.7±0.2) and specific star-formation rates of 3−10 Gyr−1. However, the stellar ages and SFHs are less well constrained. Using different SFH priors, we cannot distinguish between median mass-weighted ages of ∼50−150 Myr, which corresponds to 50% formation redshifts of z50∼10−12 atz∼9 and is of the order of the dynamical timescales of these systems. Importantly, the models with different SFH priors are able to fit the data equally well. We conclude that the current observational data cannot tightly constrain the mass-buildup timescales of these z=9−11 galaxies, with our results consistent with SFHs implying both a shallow and steep increase of the cosmic SFR density with time at z >10
We used the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to observe the semiforbidden C iii λλ1907, 1909 doublet emission in green pea galaxies at 0.13 ≤ z ≤ 0.3. We ...detect C iii emission in 7/10 galaxies with C iii equivalent widths (EWs) that range from 2 to 10 , confirming that C iii emission is almost ubiquitous in low-mass, low-metallicity (12+log(O/H) < 8.4) galaxies that are characterized by strong optical O iii λ5007 emission. The composite UV spectrum shows evidence for the He ii λ1640 emission line and interstellar absorption features (e.g., C iv λλ1548, 1550, Al iii λλ1854, 1862). We do not detect the O iii λλ1661, 1666 emission with >3 significance. The observed C iii emission line strengths are consistent with the predictions from photoionization models that incorporate the effects of binary stellar evolution with young stellar ages ≤3-5 Myr and high ionization parameters (log U > −2). The hard ionizing radiation from young massive stars and high nebular temperatures at low metallicities can account for the observed high EWs of C iii λ1909 and O iii λ5007 emission lines. Some of the star-forming galaxies at high redshift and local blue compact dwarf galaxies show offsets from the EW(C iii) versus EW(O iii) model grids, indicating an additional contribution to the continuum emission from composite stellar populations or different C/O abundances, nebular temperatures, and electron densities than assumed in the photoionization models. The green pea galaxies do not show a significant correlation between the Ly and C iii EWs, and the observed scatter is likely due to the variations in the optical depth of Ly to the neutral gas. Green pea galaxies are likely to be density-bounded, and we examined the dependence of C iii emission on the Lyman continuum optical depth. The potential LyC leaker galaxies in our sample have high C iii EWs that can only be reproduced by starburst ages as young as <3 Myr and harder ionizing spectra than the nonleakers. Among the galaxies with similar metallicities and ionization parameters, the C iii EW appears to be stronger for those with higher optical depth to LyC, as expected from the photoionization models. There are various factors that affect the C iii emission line strengths, and further investigation of a larger sample of C iii emitters is necessary to calibrate the dependence of C iii emission on the escape of LyC radiation and enable application of the C iii diagnostics to galaxies in the reionization epoch.
ABSTRACT We present a robust measurement and analysis of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) luminosity functions at z = 4-8. We use deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging over the Cosmic Assembly ...Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey/GOODS fields, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, and the Hubble Frontier Field deep parallel observations near the Abell 2744 and MACS J0416.1-2403 clusters. The combination of these surveys provides an effective volume of 0.6-1.2 × 106 Mpc3 over this epoch, allowing us to perform a robust search for faint 18) and bright (M 21) high-redshift galaxies. We select candidate galaxies using a well-tested photometric redshift technique with careful screening of contaminants, finding a sample of 7446 candidate galaxies at 3.5 8.5, with >1000 galaxies at 6-8. We measure both a stepwise luminosity function for candidate galaxies in our redshift samples, and a Schechter function, using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo analysis to measure robust uncertainties. At the faint end, our UV luminosity functions agree with previous studies, yet we find a higher abundance of UV-bright candidate galaxies at 6. Our best-fit value of the characteristic magnitude is consistent with −21 at 5, which is different than that inferred based on previous trends at lower redshift, and brighter at ∼2 significance than previous measures at z = 6 and 7. At z = 8, a single power law provides an equally good fit to the UV luminosity function, while at z = 6 and 7 an exponential cutoff at the bright end is moderately preferred. We compare our luminosity functions to semi-analytical models, and find that the lack of evolution in is consistent with models where the impact of dust attenuation on the bright end of the luminosity function decreases at higher redshift, although a decreasing impact of feedback may also be possible. We measure the evolution of the cosmic star-formation rate (SFR) density by integrating our observed luminosity functions to , correcting for dust attenuation, and find that the SFR density declines proportionally to (1 ) at 4, which is consistent with observations at 9. Our observed luminosity functions are consistent with a reionization history that starts at 10, completes at 6, and reaches a midpoint (x 0.5) at 6.7 9.4. Finally, using a constant cumulative number density selection and an empirically derived rising star-formation history, our observations predict that the abundance of bright z = 9 galaxies is likely higher than previous constraints, although consistent with recent estimates of bright 10 galaxies.
The star formation histories (SFHs) of galaxies contain imprints of the physical processes responsible for regulating star formation during galaxy growth and quenching. We improve the Dense Basis SFH ...reconstruction method of Iyer & Gawiser, introducing a nonparametric description of the SFH based on the lookback times at which a galaxy assembles certain quantiles of its stellar mass. The method uses Gaussian processes to create smooth SFHs independent of any functional form, with a flexible number of parameters that is adjusted to extract the maximum amount of information from the SEDs being fit. Applying the method to reconstruct the SFHs of 48,791 galaxies with H < 25 at 0.5 < z < 3.0 across the five Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey fields, we study the evolution of galaxies over time. We quantify the fraction of galaxies that show multiple major episodes of star formation, finding that the median time between two peaks of star formation is , where tuniv is the age of the universe at a given redshift and remains roughly constant with stellar mass. Correlating SFHs with morphology allows us to compare the timescales on which the SFHs decline for different morphological classifications, ranging from for galaxies with spiral arms to for spheroids at 0.5 < z < 1.0 with 1010 < M* < 1010.5M . The Gaussian process-based SFH description provides a general approach to reconstruct smooth, flexible, nonparametric SFH posteriors for galaxies that can be incorporated into Bayesian SED fitting codes to minimize the bias in estimating physical parameters due to SFH parameterization.

In anticipation of the new era of high-redshift exploration marked by the commissioning of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we present two sets of galaxy catalogues that are designed ...to aid the planning and interpretation of observing programs. We provide a set of 40 wide-field light-cones with footprints spanning approximately ∼1000 arcmin2 containing galaxies up to z = 10, and a new set of eight ultradeep light-cones with 132 arcmin2 footprints, containing galaxies up to z ∼ 12 down to the magnitudes expected to be reached in the deepest JWST surveys. These mock light-cones are extracted from dissipationless N-body simulations and populated with galaxies using the well-established, computationally efficient Santa Cruz semi-analytic model for galaxy formation. We provide a wide range of predicted physical properties, and simulated photometry from Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and many other instruments. We explore the predicted counts and luminosity functions and angular two-point correlation functions for galaxies in these simulated light-cones. We also explore the predicted field-to-field variance using multiple light-cone realizations. We find that these light-cones reproduce the available measurements of observed clustering from 0.2 ≲ z ≲ 7.5 very well. We provide predictions for galaxy clustering at high redshift that may be obtained from future JWST observations. All of the light-cones presented here are made available through a web-based interactive data release portal.
Studying giant star-forming clumps in distant galaxies is important to understand galaxy formation and evolution. At present, however, observers and theorists have not reached a consensus on whether ...the observed "clumps" in distant galaxies are the same phenomenon that is seen in simulations. In this paper, as a step to establish a benchmark of direct comparisons between observations and theories, we publish a sample of clumps constructed to represent the commonly observed "clumps" in the literature. This sample contains 3193 clumps detected from 1270 galaxies at 0.5 ≤ z < 3.0 . The clumps are detected from rest-frame UV images, as described in our previous paper. Their physical properties (e.g., rest-frame color, stellar mass ( M * ), star formation rate (SFR), age, and dust extinction) are measured by fitting the spectral energy distribution (SED) to synthetic stellar population models. We carefully test the procedures of measuring clump properties, especially the method of subtracting background fluxes from the diffuse component of galaxies. With our fiducial background subtraction, we find a radial clump U − V color variation, where clumps close to galactic centers are redder than those in outskirts. The slope of the color gradient (clump color as a function of their galactocentric distance scaled by the semimajor axis of galaxies) changes with redshift and M * of the host galaxies: at a fixed M * , the slope becomes steeper toward low redshift, and at a fixed redshift, it becomes slightly steeper with M * . Based on our SED fitting, this observed color gradient can be explained by a combination of a negative age gradient, a negative E(B − V) gradient, and a positive specific SFR gradient of the clumps. We also find that the color gradients of clumps are steeper than those of intra-clump regions. Correspondingly, the radial gradients of the derived physical properties of clumps are different from those of the diffuse component or intra-clump regions.
We present new constraints on the star formation histories of six ultra-faint dwarf galaxies: Bootes I, Canes Venatici II, Coma Berenices, Hercules, Leo IV, and Ursa Major I. Our analysis employs a ...combination of high-precision photometry obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope, medium-resolution spectroscopy obtained with the DEep Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph on the W. M. Keck Observatory, and updated Victoria-Regina isochrones tailored to the abundance patterns appropriate for these galaxies. The data for five of these Milky Way satellites are best fit by a star formation history where at least 75% of the stars formed by z ~ 10 (13.3 Gyr ago). All of the galaxies are consistent with 80% of the stars forming by z ~ 6 (12.8 Gyr ago) and 100% of the stars forming by z ~ 3 (11.6 Gyr ago). The similarly ancient populations of these galaxies support the hypothesis that star formation in the smallest dark-matter sub-halos was suppressed by a global outside influence, such as the reionization of the universe.
This paper studies the properties of kiloparsec-scale clumps in star-forming galaxies at z - 2 through multi-wavelength broadband photometry. A sample of 40 clumps is identified from Hubble Space ...Telescope (HST)/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) z-band images through auto-detection and visual inspection from 10 galaxies with 1.5 < z < 2.5 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, where deep and high-resolution HST/WFC3 and ACS images enable us to resolve structures of z ~ 2 galaxies down to the kiloparsec scale in the rest-frame UV and optical bands and to detect clumps toward the faint end. Our results are broadly consistent with a widely held view that clumps are formed through gravitational instability in gas-rich turbulent disks and would eventually migrate toward galactic centers and coalesce into bulges. Roughly 40% of the galaxies in our sample contain a massive clump that could be identified as a proto-bulge, which seems qualitatively consistent with such a bulge-formation scenario.

We study the relationship between the UV continuum slope and infrared excess ( ) predicted by performing dust radiative transfer on a suite of hydrodynamical simulations of galaxies. Our suite ...includes both isolated disk galaxies and mergers intended to be representative of galaxies at both and . Our low-redshift systems often populate a region around the locally calibrated Meurer et al. relation but move above the relation during merger-induced starbursts. Our high-redshift systems are blue and IR luminous and therefore lie above the Meurer et al. relation. The value of β strongly depends on the dust type used in the RT simulation: Milky-Way-type dust leads to significantly more negative (bluer) slopes compared with Small-Magellanic-Cloud-type dust. The effect on β due to variations in the dust composition with galaxy properties or redshift is the dominant model uncertainty. The dispersion in β is anticorrelated with specific star formation rate (sSFR) and tends to be higher for the simulations. In the actively star-forming simulated galaxies, dust attenuation dominates the dispersion in β, whereas in the simulations, the contributions of star formation history (SFH) variations and dust are similar. For low-sSFR systems at both redshifts, SFH variations dominate the dispersion. Finally, the simulated isolated disks and mergers both occupy a region in the plane consistent with observed dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs). Thus, contrary to some claims in the literature, the blue colors of high-z DSFGs do not imply that they are short-lived starbursts.
