Triant Flouris is a prominent academic and administrator in aviation management education; Dennis Lock has more than forty years experience in practising, lecturing and writing about project ...management. When these two experts combined their considerable talents to write their earlier book Aviation Project Management, it was little wonder that distinguished reviewers gave generous praise and acclaimed it as a welcome addition to what, until then, had been a neglected field. That first title was structured as an essential primer for managers and students. The authors have now written this more in-depth book for managers and students who need to study aviation project management in much greater detail, as well as critically connect project management within an aviation context to prudent business decision-making. Aviation project management is described in considerable detail throughout all stages of a lifecycle that begins when the project is only a vague concept and does not end until the project has been successfully completed, fully documented, and put into operational service. Aviation projects have commonly failed to deliver their expected outcomes on time and have greatly exceeded their intended budgets. Many of those failures would have been prevented if the project managers had adhered to the sound principles of project management, as described and demonstrated throughout this book.
The inflammatory nature of atherosclerosis has been well established. However, the initial steps that trigger this reponse in the arterial intima remain obscure. Previous studies reported a ...significant rate of genomic alterations in human atheromas. The accumulation of genomic rearrangements in vascular endothelium and smooth muscle cells may be important for disease development. To address this issue, 78 post‐mortem obtained aortic atheromas were screened for microsatellite DNA alterations versus correspondent venous blood. To evaluate the significance of these observations, 33 additional histologically normal aortic specimens from age and sex‐matched cases were examined. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) was found in 47,4% of the cases and in 18,2% of controls in at least one locus. The LOH occurrence in aortic tissue is associated to atherosclerosis risk (OR 4,06,95% CI 1,50 to 10,93). Significant genomic alterations were found on 1p32‐p31, 1q22‐q25, 2q35 and 6p21.3 where VCAM1, SELE, APEG1 and AIF1 genes have been mapped respectively. Our data implicate somatic DNA rearrangements, on loci associated to leukocyte adhesion, vascular smooth muscle cells growth, differentiation and migration, to atherosclerosis development as an inflammatory condition.
In epithelial ovarian neoplasms K-ras codon 12 gene mutations show a wide variation fluctuating between 4-39% in invasive carcinomas and 20-48% in borderline malignant tumors. In this study, we ...showed the pattern of point mutations in codon 12 of the K-ras, H-ras and N-ras genes, using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis in 74 tissue specimens of Greek patients with epithelial ovarian tumors. K-ras and H-ras gene mutations were detected in 11/48 (23%) and 3/48 (6%) cases with primary invasive ovarian carcinomas, respectively, while N-ras gene mutations were not found. No mutation of K-, H- and N-ras genes was detected in 23 ovarian cystadenomas. In 1 out of 3 borderline ovarian tumors (33%) we found an H-ras gene mutation. The prevalence of mutations in K-ras gene was 1/8 (13%) in mucinous, 7/29 (24%) in serous, 1/3 (33%) in endometrioid and 2/8 (25%) in clear-cell adenocarcinomas and in H-ras gene 1/8 (13%) in mucinous and 2/29 (7%) in serous adenocarcinomas. Analysis of the results revealed no significant correlation between ras gene mutations and clinicopathological parameters or clinical outcome of this primary invasive ovarian carcinoma population. Our present data suggest that ras gene mutations in invasive ovarian carcinomas occur in 29% of Greek patients and are not associated with the differentiation of the epithelial cells or the response of patients to adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy.
