The Ötztal Nappe in the Eastern Alps is a thrust sheet of Variscan metamorphic basement rocks and their Mesozoic sediment cover. It has been argued that the main part of the Ötztal Nappe and its ...southeastern part, the Texel Complex, belong to two different Austroalpine nappe systems and are separated by a major tectonic contact. Different locations have been proposed for this boundary. We use microprobe mapping of garnet and structural field geology to test the hypothesis of such a tectonic separation. The Pre-Mesozoic rocks in the area include several lithotectonic units: Ötztal Complex s.str., Texel Complex, Laas Complex, Schneeberg Complex, and Schneeberg Frame Zone. With the exception of the Schneeberg Complex which contains only single-phased (Eoalpine, i.e. Late Cretaceous) garnet, all these units have two-phased garnet with Variscan cores and Eoalpine rims. The Schneeberg Complex represents Paleozoic sediments with only low-grade (sub-garnet-grade) Variscan metamorphism which was thrust over the other units and their Mesozoic cover (Brenner Mesozoic) during an early stage of the Eoalpine orogeny, before the peak of Eoalpine metamorphism and garnet growth. Folding of the thrust later modified the structural setting so that the Schneeberg Thrust was locally inverted and the Schneeberg Complex came to lie under the Ötztal Complex s.str. The hypothesized Ötztal/Texel boundaries of earlier authors either cut across undisturbed lithological layering or are unsupported by any structural evidence. Our results support the existence of one coherent Ötztal Nappe, including the Texel Complex, and showing a southeastward increase of Eoalpine metamorphism which resulted from southeastward subduction.
The Yuli Belt exposed in the retro-wedge of the eastern part of the Taiwan orogen hosts slivers of a heterogeneous unit of blueschist-facies rocks. However, the question pertaining to its ...palaeogeographic provenance is still debated despite new geochronological data. This is largely because the structural geometries and kinematics of the Yuli Belt's tectonic contacts with its adjacent units are improperly understood. This paper presents new structural data from field work along several river transects in the Yuli Belt, which we combine with published data into a new tectonic model. Fieldwork and microstructural analyses indicate three deformation phases in the Yuli Belt. Based on cross sections and a review of available P-T-t data, we suspect that blueschist-facies units could have been emplaced on top of green-schist- facies metasedimentary units along a thrust during a first deformation phase D1. This assembly was later thrust over the Eurasian-derived Tailuko Belt along the Shoufeng Fault during D2, as suggested by W-plunging stretching lineations on fault-parallel foliation planes. D3 produced E-vergent folds with W- to NW-dipping axial planes, refolding earlier foliations as well as the D1 nappe contact. We suspect that this E-vergent folding could be related to top-E backthrusting observed along the Shoufeng Fault, involving its reorientation from an initially E-dipping to a presently W-dipping contact. The blueschist-facies metamorphic unit of the Yuli Belt likely represents a mid-Miocene fragment of oceanic crust and mantle issued in the South China Sea. It could hence be considered as part of the suture between the Eurasian and the Philippine Sea plates.
Blueschist facies rocks in the Yuli Belt of Taiwan's Central Range record ongoing subduction of the Eurasian plate. We present a prograde Lu–Hf garnet–whole‐rock age of 5.1 ± 1.7 Ma from a ...retrogressed blueschist in the Yuli Belt. This age is considerably younger than the previously assumed age of 14–8 Ma for high‐pressure metamorphism in the Yuli Belt and represents the youngest Lu–Hf garnet age ever recorded for blueschist facies metamorphism. The age sheds new light on the palaeogeographic origin and exhumation scenario of the Yuli Belt. We propose that the Yuli Belt originated from the ocean–continent boundary of the Chinese passive margin. It was subducted eastward during collision with the Luzon island arc and rapidly exhumed when the forearc lithosphere was removed from above the continental slab by discrete subduction (extraction). This process reduces the pressure above the continental slab and may prompt the ascent of subducted crust into the opening gap. Thus, it can control the exhumation of high‐pressure rocks.
Phase relations among the mineral assemblages of UHP kyanite eclogite were investigated in the Pohorje Mountains of the Eastern Alps. Ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism resulted from intracontinental ...subduction during the Cretaceous (ca. 92Ma). Kyanite-bearing eclogites are associated with meta-ultramafic rocks including UHP garnet peridotites and are embedded in metapelitic gneisses and micaschists. The kyanite eclogites contain a peak metamorphic assemblage of garnet, omphacite, kyanite and phengite. Pyrope-rich garnet is unzoned and almost free of inclusions. The non-stoichiometric supersilicic omphacite contains up to 5mol% of Ca-Eskola molecule. Breakdown of omphacite during decompression resulted in exsolution of oriented rods of silica. Phengite contains up to 3.5 Si a.p.f.u. Polycrystalline quartz inclusions in peak-pressure minerals – garnet, omphacite and kyanite – are surrounded by radial fractures diagnostic of the former presence of coesite. Peak-pressure minerals are replaced by symplectites of diopside+plagioclase+amphibole after omphacite, plagioclase+biotite after phengite and sapphirine+corundum+spinel+anorthite after kyanite. Sapphirine has composition close to (Mg, Fe)12.4 Al38.9 Si4.5 O80 in average, which is amongst the most aluminous yet reported. Peak metamorphic conditions were constrained from calculated phase equilibria in the NKCFMASH system with the fixed bulk-rock composition, and conventional geothermobarometry. This approach led to consistent results, the calculated peak P–T conditions of 3.0–3.7GPa and 710–940°C, in the stability field of coesite and the same range as metamorphic conditions recorded by the associated garnet peridotites. This implies that eclogites and their host rocks were subducted to depths of about 100km. The relatively high temperature at peak pressure, compared to UHP rocks of Tertiary age in the Western Alps where mostly oceanic crust was subducted, probably resulted from radiogenic heat production by subducting continental crust, in the intra-continental setting of the Cretaceous subduction zone in the Eastern Alps.

The Nestos Shear Zone (NSZ) in the Rhodope Metamorphic Province is a major high‐strain zone between two metamorphic terranes. Microdiamond‐bearing ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) rocks occur in the NSZ ...which was therefore interpreted as a suture zone where subduction and exhumation of these rocks and terrain accretion occurred during the Mesozoic. Our petrological study of samples from the lower part of the NSZ, together with monazite dating of a microdiamond‐bearing garnet schist, structural observations, already published results from the upper part, and other published timing constraints, results in a fundamentally different picture: the NSZ is the base of an Eocene age southwestward thrust wedge which included not only the structurally higher parts of the Rhodope Metamorphic Province but also the entire Internal Hellenides. The UHP rocks, for the peak pressure of which we derive an age of ∼200 Ma by monazite dating, are unrelated to the tectonic processes in the NSZ and probably represent slivers of a higher tectonic unit captured by thrusting along the NSZ. Pressure decrease in the footwall and regional extension and basin formation in the hanging wall during the activity of the NSZ show that the overlying thrust wedge was collapsing in late Eocene times. We hypothesize that the transition from subduction to continental collision may start with a pronounced accretion event when the first detachment horizon forms in the middle crust of the downgoing plate. Such an event could trigger slab retreat, an extensional collapse of the internal wedge, and subsequent magmatism.

Anthropogenic global warming may be accelerated by a positive feedback from the mobilization of methane from thawing Arctic permafrost. There are large uncertainties about the size of carbon stocks ...and the magnitude of possible methane emissions. Methane cannot only be produced from the microbial decay of organic matter within the thawing permafrost soils (microbial methane) but can also come from natural gas (thermogenic methane) trapped under or within the permafrost layer and released when it thaws. In the Taymyr Peninsula and surroundings in North Siberia, the area of the worldwide largest positive surface temperature anomaly for 2020, atmospheric methane concentrations have increased considerably during and after the 2020 heat wave. Two elongated areas of increased atmospheric methane concentration that appeared during summer coincide with two stripes of Paleozoic carbonates exposed at the southern and northern borders of the Yenisey-Khatanga Basin, a hydrocarbon-bearing sedimentary basin between the Siberian Craton to the south and the Taymyr Fold Belt to the north. Over the carbonates, soils are thin to nonexistent and wetlands are scarce. The maxima are thus unlikely to be caused by microbial methane from soils or wetlands. We suggest that gas hydrates in fractures and pockets of the carbonate rocks in the permafrost zone became unstable due to warming from the surface. This process may add unknown quantities of methane to the atmosphere in the near future.
The Slovenska Bistrica ultramafic complex (SBUC; Eastern Alps, Slovenia) occupies the south-easternmost part of the Pohorje Mountains, which represent an exhumed piece of continental crust subducted ...during the Cretaceous Eo-Alpine orogeny. The SBUC is composed of serpentinised harzburgites with local occurrences of garnet lherzolite, and is the only known occurrence of ultramafic rocks within the high- to ultrahigh-pressure nappe system apart from a few small dismembered pieces in the near vicinity. The harzburgites are highly depleted following melting within the spinel stability field, as exemplified by high whole-rock MgO contents (41.5–44.3 wt.%), low Al
2O
3 (0.7–1.2 wt.%), low Lu
N (0.1–0.7), and high Cr# of Cr-spinel (ca. 0.5). Fluid-immobile incompatible trace elements (Ti, Sc, V, Zr, HREE, Th) correlate well with MgO, consistent with a melt depletion trend. Other incompatible elements (Ba, Sr, LREE) show little correlation and are probably modified by the serpentinisation process or later metamorphic overprint. However, comparable LREE enrichment of all samples and absence of negative Nb and Th anomalies suggests that this piece of mantle was already metasomatised by melts or fluids before serpentinisation.
Garnet lherzolite in the SBUC recorded an UHP stage (4 GPa, 900 °C) not visible in the harzburgites. Because of the evidence of an earlier lower pressure stage within the spinel stability field, the SBUC represents a piece of subducted mantle. The protolith of the harzburgites is probably oceanic mantle, considering the high degree of melt depletion yet the lack of a subduction-zone signature. It therefore most likely represents a part of previously subducted Meliata oceanic mantle, which was part of a deeper section of the hanging wall along which subduction of the continental crust that is now exposed in Pohorje took place. Alternatively, it may represent mantle depleted and metasomatised in a continental rift zone, which was later incorporated in the hanging wall of the subduction zone and subsequently dragged down to UHP conditions.
The Penninic nappe stack in the Central and Western Alps was formed in a collision zone environment after the closure of the Penninic oceans in the Paleogene. This study reports Lu–Hf garnet-whole ...rock ages of 56.5 ± 2.7 and 58.2 ± 1.4 Ma for two eclogite samples from the Theodul Glacier Unit, which is inserted within the structurally uppermost parts of the ophiolitic Zermatt-Saas Zone. The distribution of major elements, Mn, Y, and Lu in garnet, and specifically an enrichment of Lu in the cores, indicate that the ages record prograde growth of garnet during pressure increase. They provide direct evidence for the continuation of subduction during the “Paleocene restoration phase”, often regarded as a tectonically quiescent period due to a reduction in clastic sediment deposition, lack of folds and thrusts of this age, and a cessation of Africa–Europe convergence as derived from the magnetic anomaly pattern in the Atlantic Ocean. The evidence for ongoing subduction in the absence of Africa–Europe convergence suggests that the subduction system was driven by gravity acting on the downgoing slab in a rollback setting, and that subduction was balanced by extension of the upper plate. The overlap of the Lu–Hf ages of both samples from the Theodul Glacier Unit show that this tectonic element represents a coherent body. The difference with respect to the 48 Ma Lu–Hf age of the Lago di Cignana Unit, another element of the Zermatt-Saas Zone, shows that the Zermatt-Saas Zone consists of tectonic subunits, which reached their respective pressure peaks over a prolonged period of approximately 10 Ma.
The first evidence for ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) metamorphism in the Eastern Alps is reported from kyanite eclogites of the Pohorje Mountains in Slovenia. Polycrystalline quartz inclusions surrounded ...by radial fractures in garnet, omphacite, and kyanite are interpreted to be pseudomorphs after coesite. Abundant quartz rods and needles in omphacite indicate an exsolution from a preexisting supersilicic clinopyroxene that contained a Ca‐Eskola component. Geothermobarometry on the mineral assemblage garnet + omphacite + kyanite + phengite + quartz/or coesite yields peak pressure and temperature conditions of 3.0–3.1 GPa and 760°–825°C, well within the stability field of coesite, thus supporting the microtextural evidence for UHP metamorphism. This records the highest‐pressure conditions of Eo‐Alpine metamorphism during the Cretaceous orogeny in the Alps, implying a very deep subduction of the continental crust to at least 90–100 km depths. The new data are evidence for a regional southeastward increase of peak pressures in the Lower Central Austroalpine, indicating a south‐ to eastward dip of the subduction zone. Subduction was intracontinental; northwestern parts of the Austroalpine (Lower Central Austroalpine) were subducted under southeastern parts (Upper Central Austroalpine). The subduction zone formed in the Early Cretaceous in the northwestern foreland of the Meliata suture after Late Jurassic closure of the Meliata Ocean and the resulting collision, by a forward subduction shift to a Permian rift.
