We drew up a checklist of the Italian vegetation (http://www.prodromo-vegetazione-italia.org/), up to the syntaxonomical rank of alliance. During the compilation of this checklist, we observed that ...some syntaxa were invalidly published. For this reason, in this article we validated some syntaxa names and, at the same time, described new syntaxa of different hierarchical levels. Therefore, 10 new orders, 1 new suborder, 18 new alliances, 3 new suballiances and 5 new associations are described here. These new syntaxa belong to the following classes: Adiantetea capilli-veneris , Parietarietea judaicae , Thlaspietea rotundifolii , Artemisietea vulgaris , Stellarietea mediae , Galio aparines–Urticetea dioicae , Mulgedio alpini–Aconitetea variegati , Trifolio medii–Geranietea sanguinei , Festuco-Seslerietea , Salicetea herbaceae , Festuco valesiacae–Brometea erecti , Molinio-Arrhenatheretea , Cisto cretici–Micromerietea julianae , Rhamno catharticae–Prunetea spinosae , Salici purpureae–Populetea nigrae , Salicetea purpureae , Quercetea ilicis and Querco roboris–Fagetea sylvaticae .
The Vegetation Prodrome of Italy was promoted in 2012 by the Italian “Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection”, in collaboration with the “Italian Society of Botany”, to provide a ...comprehensive and systematic catalogue and description of Italian plant communities. The Prodrome that is presented in this paper is the first full organic synthesis of the vegetation of Italy at the alliance syntaxonomic level. It fulfils several needs, the main one being a unified and comprehensive national framework that may make an important contribution to the definition of the European Vegetation Prodrome. Syntaxonomy, as well as taxonomy, is sometimes based on considerations that may in part diverge: several authors tend to favour models that are divisive or aggregative to a greater or lesser extent in terms of flora, biogeography and ecology. These different points of view stimulate the scientific debate and allow the adoption of a framework that is more widely supported. The Prodrome includes 75 classes, 2 subclasses, 175 orders, 6 suborders and 393 alliances. The classes were grouped into nine broad categories according to structural, physiognomic and synecological elements rather than to syntaxonomic criteria. The rank, full valid name, any synonymies and incorrect names are provided for each syntaxon . The short declaration highlights the physiognomy, synecology, syndynamics and distribution of the plant communities that belong to the syntaxon . The Prodrome of the Italian Vegetation is linked to the European Strategy for Biodiversity, the European Habitats Directive and the European Working Groups related to the ecosystems and their services. In addition to basic applications, the Prodrome can be used as a framework for scientific research related to the investigation of the relationships between plant communities and the environmental factors that influence their composition and distribution.
The role of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) as an additional investigation to computer tomography for pulmonary carcinoid tumors remains controversial. The aim of this study ...was to assess the role of FDG-PET for the diagnosis and staging of pulmonary carcinoid tumors.
We performed a retrospective mono-institutional analysis of data from 97 patients with pathologically confirmed pulmonary carcinoid tumor who had been operated on between July 1998 and April 2009 and had had a preoperative FDG-PET scan performed.
Sixty-five (67%) of the 97 tumors were typical (TC) and 32 (33%) atypical (AC) carcinoid tumors. Overall FDG-PET sensitivity was 67% being lower for TC (60%) than for AC (81%) (P=0.04). FDG-PET negative tumors were smaller than FDG-PET positive tumors, with a respective median size of 15 and 17 mm (P=0.02). Median SUVmax for FDG-PET-positive tumors was 4.0 (2.8-5.1) with no difference between TC and AC tumors. Median Ki-67 expression was respectively 4.7% and 3.1% for FDG-PET positive and FDG-PET negative tumors (P=0.05). During a median follow-up of 49 months (interquartile range 30-63 months), 9 patients (4TC, 5AC) developed recurrent disease. Neither SUVmax nor Ki-67 expression resulted associated with disease-free survival.
With an overall sensitivity of 67%, FDG-PET has shown to be useful in the preoperative work-up of patients with suspect lung carcinoid tumors. In particular it could have a role in larger tumors. These results warrant a prospective evaluation of FDG-PET in the staging of lung carcinoid tumor.
In the course of the project “Syntaxonomic checklist of the Italian classes, orders and alliances (Vegetation Prodrome of Italy)”, promoted in 2012 by the Italian “Ministry of Environment, Land and ...Sea Protection” in collaboration with the “Italian Society of Botany”, it arises that some syntaxa are not validly published according to the International Code of Phytosociological Nomenclature rules. For this reason, these syntaxa names are validated in this paper. Furthermore, other new syntaxa of different hierarchical levels are here described for the first time. Therefore, one new order, two new suborders, six new alliances, two new suballiances and three new associations are here described. These new syntaxa belong to the following classes: Juncetea maritimi , Stellarietea mediae , Trifolio medii–Geranietea sanguinei , Alnetea glutinosae and Salici purpureae–Populetea nigrae. Finally, the syntaxonomic arrangement of Alnion incanae is here discussed.

habitat (Directive 92/43/EEC). Seeds of this species are required for the execution of restoration works concerning this habitat. Therefore, the recovery and the study of autochthonous germplasm are needed. This study focused on the intra-specific variations in seed mass and size and in seed germination behavior in this species since the knowledge of these aspects can be very useful in the planning of restoration projects. The present research evidenced significant differences in mean seed mass and size in the populations studied that were correlated to the precipitation values of their collection sites. Studied seeds are able to germinate under a wide range of temperatures. They reached their maximum germination between 5 and 25°C and are capable of germination even at 30°C but with a remarkable reduction in germination percentage. Temperature was found to strongly influence germination, especially in terms of the speed. Light was found to enhance germination in almost all the populations studied while the removal of outer covering structures was found to be of no effect.
We report the case of a 42-year-old woman with a double vascular catheter mimicking a false persistent left superior vena cava on a chest X-ray. Physicians should be aware of the correct course of ...these catheters in order to avoid serious clinical consequences.
Validation of predictive risk models for prolonged air leak (PAL) is essential to understand if they can help to reduce its incidence and complications. This study aimed to evaluate both the clinical ...and statistical performances of 4 existing models. We selected 4 predictive PAL risk models based on their scientific relevance. We referred to these models as Chicago, Bordeaux, Leeds and Pittsburgh model, respectively, according to the affiliation place of the first author. These predicting risk models were retrospectively applied to patients recorded on the second edition of the Italian Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Group registry. Predictions for each patient were calculated based on the logistic regression coefficient values provided in the original manuscripts. All models were tested for their overall performance, discrimination, and calibration. We recalibrated the original models with the re-estimation of the model intercept and slope. We used curve decision analysis to describe and compare the clinical effects of the studied risk models. Better statistical metrics characterize the models developed on larger populations (Chicago and Bordeaux models). However, no model has a valid benefit for threshold probability greater than 0.30. The Net benefit of the most performing model (Bordeaux model) at the threshold probability of 0.11 is 23 of 1000 patients, burdened by 333 false positive cases. One of 1000 is the Net benefit at the threshold probability of 0.3. The use of PAL scores based on preoperative predictive factors cannot be currently used in a clinical setting because of a high false positive rate and low positive predictive value.

We report a case of a 62-year-old man affected by Pancoast's tumor who developed pneumocephalus 17 days after right upper lobectomy with en bloc resection of the first three ribs and C8-D1 branches ...of the brachial plexus. The patient complained of aphasia, disorientation and sphincterial release. A chest and brain-CT scan showed a right apical pneumothorax associated with a massive pneumocephalus of the ventricles and of the subarachnoidal spaces. A pneumoperitoneum was also seen. The patient was treated using pleural drainages, Trendelenburg's position and antibiotic therapy. Clinical and radiological remission was achieved after 12 days of additional hospital stay.
Background. Localized (solitary) fibrous tumors (LFTPs) of the pleura are rare, slow-growing neoplasms thought to originate from submesothelial connective issue. The aim of this article is to present ...55 new cases of LFTP, and to discuss the treatment of choice and the clinical behavior of such neoplasms.
Methods. From July 1990 to November 1999, 55 patients (32 male, 23 female) with an LFTP were surgically treated at our Institution. Neoplasms were considered to be malignant if one or more of the following histologic features were present: high cellularity with crowding and overlapping of nuclei; high mitotic activity; or mild, moderate, or marked pleomorphism.
Results. No operative mortality was reported. Forty-eight of the cases arose from the visceral pleura and seven arose from the parietal pleura. A local removal of the neoplasm with free surgical margins was accomplished by video-assisted thoracic surgery in 39 patients and by standard thoracotomy in 10 patients. Four patients underwent formal lung resections, 1 had thymectomy, and 1 had en bloc chest wall resection. Four malignant variants were identified. One patient developed local recurrence and underwent redo surgery with chest wall resection. One patient died of unrelated disease. The remaining patients are alive and disease free at a median follow-up of 53.2 months.
Conclusions. LFTPs show a benign outcome in most of the cases. Video-assisted thoracic surgery, with intraoperative assessment of the surgical margins, represents the treatment of choice.
