Objetivo: extraer y evaluar la actividad antiviral de los compuestos de Chondracanthus chamissoi y Chlorella peruviana contra DENV-2 en células Vero-76. Materiales y métodos: se extrajeron el ...carragenano de Chondracanthus chamissoi, los carbohidratos solubles de Chondracanthus chamissoi y Chlorella peruviana y se realizó la prueba de toxicidad en células VERO-76 y la evaluación de la actividad antiviral. Resultados: se obtuvieron carragenanos de la fase de esporofito y gametofito de Chondracanthus chamissoi, los mismos que fueron identificados, mediante infrarrojo, como k-carragenano. Por cromatografía se identificaron nueve azúcares (ribosa, xilosa, arabinosa, fructuosa, manosa, galactosa, sucrosa, maltosa y lactosa) en la muestra de carbohidratos solubles de Chondracanthus chamissoi fase gametofito y cuatro azucares (glucosa, sucrosa, maltosa y lactosa) en la de Chlorella peruviana. Los compuestos de Chondracanthus chamissoi y la solución de carbohidratos solubles de Chlorella peruviana no presentaron efecto citotóxico; los carbohidratos del extracto crudo de Chlorella peruviana sí los tuvieron. Todas las fracciones del extracto crudo de Chondracanthus chamissoi fase gametofítica fueron positivas por la prueba de reducción del número de placas(50) a la dilución 1:5. El k-carragenano de Chondracanthus chamissoi en ambas fases y los extractos crudos de carbohidratos solubles de Chondracanthus chamissoi, Chlorella peruviana y la solución de carbohidratos solubles de Chlorella peruviana inhibieron el crecimiento del virus dengue, pero no los carbohidratos del extracto crudo de la Chlorella peruviana. Conclusiones: los compuestos obtenidos de Chondracanthus chamissoi y Chlorella peruviana presentan actividad antiviral contra DENV-2 por lo cual es necesario continuar los estudios del potencial antiviral de estos compuestos fraccionados y purificados.
The goal of this study was to identify unique profiles of readers in a sample of 8–16 year olds with higher functioning autism spectrum disorders (HFASD) and examine the profiles in relation to ASD ...symptom severity. Eighty-one students were assessed utilizing a comprehensive reading battery that included basic word reading, language, and comprehension. Using Latent Profile Analysis, four empirically distinct profiles of readers emerged. Next, using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (Lord et al., Autism diagnostic observation schedule, 2nd edn, Western Psychological Services, Torrance, CA, 2012), analyses were conducted to determine if significant differences existed between profiles as a result of ASD symptomatology. Findings demonstrate the heterogeneous nature of reading profiles in students with HFASD and significant differences between the reading profiles and ASD symptom severity.
Redesigning lignin, the aromatic polymer fortifying plant cell walls, to be more amenable to chemical depolymerization can lower the energy required for industrial processing. We have engineered ...poplar trees to introduce ester linkages into the lignin polymer backbone by augmenting the monomer pool with monolignol ferulate conjugates. Herein, we describe the isolation of a transferase gene capable of forming these conjugates and its xylem-specific introduction into poplar. Enzyme kinetics, in planta expression, lignin structural analysis, and improved cell wall digestibility after mild alkaline pretreatment demonstrate that these trees produce the monolignol ferulate conjugates, export them to the wall, and use them during lignification. Tailoring plants to use such conjugates during cell wall biosynthesis is a promising way to produce plants that are designed for deconstruction.

Data from the 2000 through 2008 Health and Retirement Study and the 2001 through 2009 Consumption and Activity Mail Survey provide a sample of 4,526 respondents. Random-effects pooled time series analyses incorporate not only the presence of various types of capital but also the quality of that capital.
Human and cultural capitals were positively associated with increased volunteer involvement. Effects of social capital (relationships in the family, employment status, and the community) depended on the quality of the relationships, not necessarily on their presence alone.
Results suggest that bolstering older adults' capitals, particularly among lower socioeconomic status groups, can increase volunteer engagement and intensity and reduce cessation. Additionally, a variety of organizational policies including respite programs for caregivers and employer policies allowing employees to reduce their work hours might indirectly affect participation rates and commitment. Potential pools of volunteers exist in families, workplaces, and religious organizations, but more research is necessary to identify how to recruit and retain individuals in social networks where volunteer participatory rates are low.

Recycling campaigns abound, but do consumers think about what becomes of those recyclables? This research proposes that product transformation salience (thinking about recyclables turning into new ...products) increases recycling. The authors theorize that consumers are inspired by the transformation of recyclables into new products and that this inspiration motivates them to recycle. The authors demonstrate the effect of product transformation messages on recycling behavior using a recycling campaign (Study 1) and advertisements for products made from recycled plastic (Study 2). Study 3 demonstrates the mediating role of inspiration. Then, three field studies provide robust support for the transformation salience effect through click-through rates for recycling advertisements (Study 4), recycling rates during pre–football game tailgating (Study 5), and a reduction in the amount of recyclable materials incorrectly placed in the landfill bin by students in a university residence hall (Study 6). The authors discuss implications for the design of recycling campaigns and positioning of recycled products in the marketplace as well as theoretical contributions regarding the roles of transformation salience and inspiration in encouraging recycling and other sustainable behaviors.

-induced pneumonia were randomised to receive intravenous naïve or cytomix-preactivated umbilical cord MSCs as a single dose at 24 h post pneumonia induction with or without a subsequent dose at 48 h. Physiological indices, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and tissues were obtained at 72 h post pneumonia induction. A single dose of naïve MSCs was largely ineffective, whereas two doses of MSCs were effective in attenuating
pneumosepsis, improving lung compliance and oxygenation, while reducing bacteria and injury in the lung. Cytomix-preactivated MSCs were superior to naïve MSCs. BAL neutrophil counts and activation were reduced, and apoptosis increased. MSC therapy reduced cytotoxic BAL T cells, and increased CD4
/CD8
ratios. Systemically, granulocytes, classical monocytes, and the CD4
/CD8
ratio were reduced, and nonclassical monocytes were increased. Repeated doses of MSCs-particularly preactivated MSCs-enhance their therapeutic potential in a clinically relevant model of established AMR

Despite the rising percentage of women accessing the medical profession over the last few decades, surgical specialties are still largely male-dominated; in particular, a remarkable gender disparity ...is evident in neurosurgery, where only 19% of practitioners are females. Although women may be reluctant to choose a challenging specialty like neurosurgery due to concerns around how to balance family and career, it must be admitted that prejudices against female neurosurgeons have been deeply rooted for long, prompting many to give up and switch track to less demanding subspecialties. Among those who have persisted, many, if not most, have experienced difficulties in career progression and received unequal treatment in comparison with their male counterparts. In 1989, a group of 8 female neurosurgeons founded Women in Neurosurgery (WINS), an organization that aimed to guarantee inclusivity in neurosurgery, encouraging a better and more egalitarian working environment. Thereafter, WINS sessions were regularly promoted at international conferences, offering female neurosurgeons a platform to report issues related to gender discrimination. Over recent years, the mission of WINS sessions in national and international conferences has taken an unexpected deviation; they have progressively become supplementary scientific sessions with only women neurosurgeons as speakers, thus paving the road to a form of self-segregation. This tendency has also resulted in the establishment of sections of only female neurosurgeons within some national societies. Although there remains a faction that fiercely supports the WINS mindset of reserved spaces for women, such segregation is an upsetting prospect for those who believe that science and professionalism have no gender; a growing part of the global neurosurgical community believes that the conception of a “female neurosurgery” and a “male neurosurgery” is misguided and counterproductive and consider the existence of the WINS as anachronistic and no longer necessary.
Context. The NASA mission TESS is currently doing an all-sky survey from space to detect transiting planets around bright stars. As part of the validation process, the most promising planet ...candidates need to be confirmed and characterized using follow-up observations.
Aims. In this article, our aim is to confirm the planetary nature of the transiting planet candidate TOI-674b using spectroscopic and photometric observations.
Methods. We use TESS, Spitzer, ground-based light curves, and HARPS spectrograph radial velocity measurements to establish the physical properties of the transiting exoplanet candidate TOI-674b. We perform a joint fit of the light curves and radial velocity time series to measure the mass, radius, and orbital parameters of the candidate.
Results. We confirm and characterize TOI-674b, a low-density super-Neptune transiting a nearby M dwarf. The host star (TIC 158588995, V = 14.2 mag, J = 10.3 mag) is characterized by its M2V spectral type with M⋆ = 0.420 ± 0.010 Mꙩ, R⋆ = 0.420 ± 0.013 Rꙩ, and T(eff) = 3514 ± 57 K; it is located at a distance d = 46.16 ± 0.03 pc. Combining the available transit light curves plus radial velocity measurements and jointly fitting a circular orbit model, we find an orbital period of 1.977143 ± 3 × 10^(−6) days, a planetary radius of 5.25 ± 0.17 Rꚛ, and a mass of 23.6 ± 3.3 Mꚛ implying a mean density of ρp =0.91 ± 0.15 g/cu. cm. A non-circular orbit model fit delivers similar planetary mass and radius values within the uncertainties. Given the measured planetary radius and mass, TOI-674b is one of the largest and most massive super-Neptune class planets discovered around an M-type star to date. It is found in the Neptunian desert, and is a promising candidate for atmospheric characterization using the James Webb Space Telescope.
