The hydrogen evolution reaction using semiconductor photocatalysts has been significantly improved by cocatalyst loading. However, there are still many speculations regarding the actual role of the ...cocatalyst. Now a photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction pathway is reported on a cocatalyst site using TiO2 nanosheets doped with Rh at Ti sites as one‐atom cocatalysts. A hydride species adsorbed on the one‐atom Rh dopant cocatalyst site was confirmed experimentally as the intermediate state for hydrogen evolution, which was consistent with the results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In this system, the role of the cocatalyst in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is related to the withdrawal of photo‐excited electrons and stabilization of the hydride intermediate species; the presence of oxygen vacancies induced by Rh facilitate the withdrawal of electrons and stabilization of the hydride.
A hydride species is generated on the Rh site in the Rh‐doped titana nanosheet as an intermediate species for the evolution of hydrogen molecules. This was confirmed by both experimental and computational methods. The oxygen vacancy in the first coordination shell of the RhOx unit contributes to the formation of the Rh−H (hydride) species, and the hydride is formed at the vacancy site.

T cells in the blood and stomachs of mice deficient in autoimmune regulator (
Aire
) (AIRE KO), a mouse model of human autoimmune polyendocrinopathy‐candidiasis‐ectodermal dystrophy. Data analysis revealed that the degree of similarity in TCR sequences between the blood and stomach varied among individual AIRE KO mice and reflected the extent of T cell infiltration in the stomach. We identified a set of TCR sequences whose frequencies in blood might correlate with extent of the stomach manifestations. Our results propose a potential of using TCR repertoires not only for diagnosing disease development but also for diagnosing affected organs in autoimmune diseases.
The thymus has the ability to regenerate from acute injury caused by radiation, infection, and stressors. In addition to thymocytes, thymic epithelial cells in the medulla (mTECs), which are crucial ...for T cell self-tolerance by ectopically expressing and presenting thousands of tissue-specific antigens (TSAs), are damaged by these insults and recover thereafter. However, given recent discoveries on the high heterogeneity of mTECs, it remains to be determined whether the frequency and properties of mTEC subsets are restored during thymic recovery from radiation damage. Here we demonstrate that acute total body irradiation with a sublethal dose induces aftereffects on heterogeneity and gene expression of mTECs. Single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis showed that irradiation reduces the frequency of mTECs expressing AIRE, which is a critical regulator of TSA expression, 15 days after irradiation. In contrast, transit-amplifying mTECs (TA-mTECs), which are progenitors of AIRE-expressing mTECs, and Ccl21a-expressing mTECs, were less affected. Interestingly, a detailed analysis of scRNA-seq data suggested that the proportion of a unique mTEC cluster expressing Ccl25 and a high level of TSAs was severely decreased by irradiation. In sum, we propose that the effects of acute irradiation disrupt the heterogeneity and properties of mTECs over an extended period, which potentially leads to an impairment of thymic T cell selection.
Steel sheet pile materials are primarily used for canal structure construction for irrigation and drainage of agricultural fields in Japan. Recently, accelerated corrosion of steel materials and ...buckling phenomena in pitting corrosion parts have been detected in in-service steel sheet pile canals. In this study, we focus on the buckling phenomenon of in-service steel sheet pile canals, which is detected by non-contact monitoring using digital image analysis. The buckling phenomenon index is evaluated as the inclination angle of the steel sheet pile due to deformation. As a digital image analysis, Hough transform is applied, which is a figure detection method in digital images, to detect a straight line that describes the distance and angle parameters. The angle parameter corresponds to the inclination angle index of in-service steel sheet pile with a buckling phenomenon. As a result, the maximum difference between the analyzed angles by Hough transform and the measured angles is evaluated as 0.9° after the image rotation correction. The relation of the analyzed angles by Hough transform and the measured angles of the buckling phenomenon is correlated. Therefore, the degradation of steel sheet pile canals is quantitatively evaluated by using digital image analysis with unmanned aerial vehicle monitoring. This study’s significance is non-contact and simple measurement by using a digital image which can reduce a working time and perform quick diagnosis in extensive areas.
Objectives
To provide updated clinico-epidemiological information on chronic pancreatitis (CP) in Japan.
Methods
We conducted a two-stage nationwide epidemiological survey; the number of CP patients ...was estimated in the first-stage survey, and their clinical features were examined in the second-stage survey. We surveyed patients with CP who had visited hospitals in 2016 and were diagnosed according to the Japanese diagnostic criteria 2009 (DC2009). Furthermore, we validated the new Japanese diagnostic criteria (DC2019) in patients with early CP diagnosed according to DC2009.
Results
The number of patients with definite/probable CP in 2016 was 56,520 (prevalence, 44.5 per 100,000 persons), and that of early CP was 4470 (prevalence, 3.5 per 100,000 persons). We obtained detailed clinical information of 2150 patients with definite/probable CP and 249 patients with early CP. Compared with the early CP cases, the definite/probable CP cases had higher proportions of male (4.8 vs. 1.3), alcohol-related etiology (72.0% vs. 45.8%), smoking history (69.6% vs. 41.0%), diabetes mellitus (42.3% vs. 19.3%), and past history of acute pancreatitis (AP) (50.4% vs. 22.1%). Among the patients with early CP diagnosed according to DC2009, 93 (37.3%) were diagnosed with early CP according to DC2019, but the diagnosis of the remaining 156 (62.7%) patients was downgraded. Alcohol-related etiology, smoking history, early disease onset, and past history of AP were associated with the maintenance of early CP diagnosis in DC2019.
Conclusion
We clarified the current status of CP in Japan. Further validation studies are warranted to clarify the diagnostic utility of DC2019.

encodes a unique jacalin-type lectin protein. In this study, we analyzed the molecular mechanisms of JAX1-mediated resistance. JAX1 restricted the multiplication of a potexviral replicon lacking movement-associated proteins, suggesting inhibition of viral replication. Therefore, we developed an
potato virus X (PVX) translation/replication system using vacuole- and nucleus-free lysates from tobacco protoplasts, and we revealed that JAX1 inhibits viral RNA synthesis but not the translation of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). JAX1 did not affect the replication of a resistance-breaking mutant of PVX. Blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of fractions separated by sucrose gradient sedimentation showed that PVX RdRp constituted the high-molecular-weight complex that seems to be crucial for viral replication. JAX1 was detected in this complex of the wild-type PVX replicon but not in that of the resistance-breaking mutant. In addition, JAX1 interacted with the RdRp of the wild-type virus but not with that of a virus with a point mutation at the resistance-breaking residue. These results suggest that JAX1 targets RdRp to inhibit potexviral replication.
Resistance genes play a crucial role in plant antiviral innate immunity. The roles of conventional nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins and the associated defense pathways have long been studied. We searched for all clinical trials that prospectively evaluated the efficacy of gefitinib for advanced non-small cell lung cancer with EGFR mutations in Japan. We did a combined analysis based on individual patient data from the identified trials.
Seven eligible trials were identified for a total of 148 non-small cell lung cancer patients with EGFR mutations. The overall response rate to gefitinib was 76.4% 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 69.5-83.2. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 9.7 months (95% CI, 8.2-11.1) and 24.3 months (95% CI, 19.8-28.2), respectively. Good performance status and chemotherapy-naïve status were significantly associated with a longer progression-free survival or overall survival. Of the 148 patients, 87 received gefitinib as a first-line therapy, whereas 61 received systemic chemotherapy before gefitinib treatment. The median progression-free survival after the start of first-line therapy was significantly longer in the gefitinib-first group than in the chemotherapy-first group (10.7 versus 6.0 months; P < 0.001), whereas no significant difference in median overall survival was apparent between the two groups (27.7 versus 25.7 months; P = 0.782).
Gefitinib monotherapy confers substantial clinical benefit in terms of progression-free survival and overall survival in non-small cell lung cancer patients with EGFR mutations. Randomized trials comparing chemotherapy with gefitinib as a first-line treatment are warranted in such patients.

The aim of this study was to conduct comparative analyses of the biological malignant potential of clinical stage IA adenocarcinoma using positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), high-resolution CT (HRCT), and three-dimensional CT (3DCT). The predictive performance of these parameters was evaluated in terms of clinical outcomes and pathological invasiveness (positive lymphatic permeation, blood-vessel invasion, pleural invasion, and lymph-node metastasis).
We enrolled 170 patients with c-IA adenocarcinoma who underwent PET/CT, HRCT, and 3D reconstruction of lung structures using the Synapse Vincent system (Fujifilm Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) followed by complete resection. Maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) of F18-fluorodeoxyglucose and the size and volume of the solid part of the tumor were quantified and analyzed in relation to surgical outcomes.
Univariate analysis demonstrated that all the three parameters and whole-tumor volume were associated with unfavorable disease-free survival (DFS), while the volume of the solid part was the independent predictor on multivariate analysis (p < .001). The receiver operating characteristic curves for pathological invasiveness, determined using the variables dichotomized at each cut-off level (SUVmax 2.4; solid-part size 1.23 cm; solid-part volume 779 mm3), showed that all were significantly correlated with pathological invasiveness and prognosis, whereas the combination of SUVmax and the solid-part volume was the most powerful predictor of survival and pathological invasiveness compared to any other parameters: the 4-year DFS and proportion of pathological invasiveness in patients with SUVmax > 2.4 and solid-part volume > 779 mm3 versus those with SUVmax ≤ 2.4 or solid-part volume ≤779 mm3 were 81.2% versus 98.3% (p < .001) and 84.3% versus 15.1% (p < .001), respectively.
In c-IA adenocarcinoma, the volume of the solid part of the tumor was the independent predictor for unfavorable DFS, and the integration of the volume of the solid part and SUVmax was highly beneficial for the prediction of survival and pathological invasiveness.
