Freshwater ecosystems are some of the most endangered environments in the world, being affected at multiple scales by the surrounding landscape and human activities therein. Effective research, ...conservation and management of these ecosystems requires integrating environmental and landscape data with hierarchic river networks by means of summarisation and synthesis of information for large and comprehensive areas at different scales (e.g. basin, sub‐basin, upstream drainage area). The dendritic nature of river networks, the need to tackle multiple scales and the ever‐growing sources of digital information (e.g. temperature or land use data grids) have increasingly led to hardly manageable processing time and stringent hardware requirements when integrating and working with this information. Here we present the River Network Toolkit (RivTool), a software that uses only tabular data to derive and calculate new information at multiple scales for riverine landscapes. It uses data from linear hierarchical river networks and the environmental/landscape data from their respective drainage areas. The software allows the acquisition of: 1) information that characterises river networks based on its topographic nature; 2) data obtained via mathematical calculations that account for the hierarchical and network nature of these systems; and 3) output information using different spatial data sources (e.g. climatic, land use, topologic) that result from up and downstream summarisations. This user‐friendly software considers two units of analysis (segment and sub‐basin) and is time effective even with large datasets. RivTool facilitates and reduces the time required for extracting information for freshwater ecosystems, and may thus contribute to increase scientific productivity, efficiency and accurateness when generating new or improving existing knowledge on large‐scale patterns and processes in river networks.

In this study, we explored how barriers such as dams have affected the longitudinal connectivity of riverine habitats from the perspective of potamodromous fish. For this purpose, connectivity changes are investigated in the central part of the Austrian Danube system, where the national reporting for the EU Water Framework Directive provides detailed information on the position and characteristics of barriers as well as the distribution range of native fish species. This assessment is based on an estimation regarding the quantitative upstream and downstream passability of individual barriers, where we further investigate three different passability scenarios to account for uncertainties. We then apply several combinations of passability scenarios and assumptions on dispersal distances to calculate a series of network-based reach and catchment connectivity indices. On average, the estimation of barrier passability indicated a high downstream passability, while upstream passability was substantially lower across scenarios. Furthermore, existing fish passes were estimated to have increased passability on average between 20 % and 24 %. Overall, the results indicated a strong effect of barriers on the longitudinal connectivity of the investigated river network. Catchment scale indices revealed a loss of connectivity, which increased with dispersal distance. Reach connectivity indices displayed a strong disruption of the natural connectivity gradient along the river network and indicated that individual river reaches have, on average, become more isolated in addition to the overall decrease in connectivity. The average loss of connectivity across scenarios was estimated at 72 % (SD = 16 %) when taking into account all connections to other reaches and 66 % (SD = 7 %) when only connections to upstream reaches were considered. We conclude that longitudinal connectivity in the Austrian Danube system is still severely compromised, making it increasingly challenging for potamodromous fish species to complete their life cycle. This issue is further amplified by the severe loss of fish habitats as a consequence of river engineering.
Aim To analyse the patterns in species richness and endemism of the native European riverine fish fauna, in the light of the Messinian salinity crisis and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Location ...European continent. Methods After gathering native fish faunistic lists of 406 hydrographical networks, we defined large biogeographical regions with homogenous fish fauna, based on a hierarchical cluster analysis. Then we analysed and compared the patterns in species richness and endemism among these regions, as well as species-area relationships. Results Among the 233 native species present in the data set, the Cyprinidae family was strongly dominant (> 50% of the total number of species). Seven biogeographical regions were defined: Western Peri-Mediterranea, Central Peri-Mediterranea, Eastern Peri-Mediterranea, Ponto-Caspian Europe, Northern Europe, Central Europe and Western Europe. The highest regional species richness was observed for Central Peri-Mediterranea and Ponto-Caspian Europe. The highest endemic richness was found in Central Peri-Mediterranea. Species-area relationships were characterized by high slope values for Peri-Mediterranean Europe and low values for Central and Western Europe. Main conclusions The results were in agreement with the'Lago Mare' hypothesis explaining the specificity of Peri-Mediterranean fish fauna, as well as with the history of recolonization of Central and Western Europe from Ponto-Caspian Europe following the LGM. The results also agreed with the mechanisms of speciation and extinction influencing fish diversity in hydrographical networks. We advise the use of the seven biogeographical regions for further studies, and suggest considering Peri-Mediterranean Europe and Ponto-Caspian Europe as'biodiversity hotspots' for European riverine fish.
Land uses affect flood risks in various ways. The comparative analysis of the historical and current land cover/uses helps to better understand changing flood regimes. Based on historical cadastre ...maps from 1826 to 1859, the land cover/uses in the Austrian catchments of the rivers Rhine, Salzach and Drava were reconstructed to almost the level of exact plots of land. Catchment-wide analysis reveals a six-fold expansion of settlement areas, a decline of arable land by 69% and a shrinking of the formerly glaciated areas by 73% until 2016. In the Alpine fluvial corridors, i.e. flood-prone areas at the valley floors and valley sides at ca. 300-year floods, settlements even expanded 7.5-fold, severely increasing the potential for flood damages. At the same time, the overall channel area of running waters has been reduced by 40% and 95% the formerly large wetlands have been lost. Overall, the fluvial corridors were truncated by 203 km

or 14%, thereby reducing flood retention capacity. The concentration of intensive forms of human land uses at lower altitudes, coupled with an upward shift of less intensively used, near-natural forms of land cover, has led to a both spatial and vertical separation of Alpine landscape features over the long term. Warmer temperatures due to climate change are expected to promote the demonstrated upward shifts of Alpine vegetation.
Zusammenfassung
Flussregulierungen haben die Flusslandschaft der Donau bedeutend verändert. Die einstige Habitat- und Artenvielfalt ging dadurch zu einem großen Teil verloren. Obwohl an der Donau ...laufend Projekte zur ökologischen Verbesserung umgesetzt werden, gibt es nach wie vor große Wissensdefizite, wie sich diese einzelnen Maßnahmen in ihrer Gesamtheit auswirken und welche Maßnahmentypen in Zukunft notwendig sind. Das CD-Labor MERI, welches in diesem Artikel vorgestellt wird, wird in den kommenden 7 Jahren diese Wissenslücken adressieren, um Strategien für ein ökologisch nachhaltiges und ökonomisch effizientes Flussmanagement der Donau zu entwickeln. Um die Auswirkungen menschlicher Aktivitäten auf die zeitliche Entwicklung der Donau vom nicht systematisch regulierten System zum heutigen Zustand nachzuvollziehen, werden historische und rezente Daten entlang der österreichischen Donau und ihrer Hauptzuflüsse mit neuen Ansätzen analysiert. Die Untersuchung von Fischwanderungen und die Dynamik der Habitatwahl von Fischen innerhalb der Donau werden Aufschlüsse über präferierte Lebensraumbereiche bzw. Lebensraumdefizite geben. Trophische, d. h. mit der Nahrung in Zusammenhang stehende Ebenen, werden ebenfalls erfasst und Nahrungsnetzbeziehungen in unterschiedlichen Flussbereichen analysiert. Die aktuellen und potenziellen Ökosystemleistungen des Flusses, wie z. B. Hochwasser- und Nährstoffrückhalt, aber auch Verfügbarkeit von Gebieten für Erholung und Freizeitaktivitäten, werden systematisch untersucht. Auch die fischereiliche Nutzung der Donau und ihrer Nebengewässer wird genauer analysiert, um ein nachhaltiges fischereiliches Management zu entwickeln. Anhand von Modellen für zukünftige Szenarien werden Ansätze für das zukünftige Flussmanagement getestet, um die Multifunktionalität der Donau zu verbessern und die Artenvielfalt zu erhalten. Der Meta-Ökosystem-Ansatz verbindet biologische Prozesse, menschliche Aktivitäten und Ökosystemleistungen auf unterschiedlichen räumlichen und zeitlichen Skalenebenen, um ein besseres Systemverständnis für die Donau zu erhalten.
River longitudinal connectivity is crucial for diadromous fish species to reproduce and grow, its fragmentation by large dams may prevent these species to complete their life cycle. This work aims to ...evaluate the impact of large dams on the structural longitudinal connectivity at the European scale, from a Diadromous fish species perspective, since the beginning of the 20th century until the early 21st century. Based on large dam locations and completion year, a multitude of river impairment metrics were calculated at three spatial scales for six European oceanic regions and 12 time periods. The number of basins affected by large dams is overall low (0.4%), but for large river basins, that cover 78% of Europe's area, 69.5% of all basins, 55.4% of the sub-basins and 68.4% of river length are impaired. River network connectivity impairment became increasingly significant during the second half of the 20th century and is nowadays spatially widespread across Europe. Except for the North Atlantic, all oceanic regions have over 50% of impacted river length. Considering large river basins, the Mediterranean (95.2%) and West Atlantic (84.6%) regions are the most affected, while the Black (92.1%) and Caspian (96.0%) regions stand out as those with most compromised river length. In 60 years, Europe has gone from reduced impairment to over two-thirds of its large rivers with structural connectivity problems due to large dams. The number of such barriers increased significantly in the second half of the 20th century, especially main stem dams with decreasing distance to the river mouth. Currently, the structural longitudinal connectivity of European river networks is severely impacted. This concerns all regions considered, and those in southern Europe will face even higher challenges, given that this will be a future hot spot for hydropower development and predictably more affected by climate change.

Auen sind ein wichtiger Teil des Ökosystems Flusslandschaft. Ihre Ausdehnung und ökologische Funktionsfähigkeit haben vor allem in den letzten 200 Jahren durch die zunehmende ...menschliche Nutzung stark abgenommen. Die Kolonisierung von Flussauen ging Hand in Hand mit einem grundlegenden Wandel im Hochwasserschutz. Dieser Artikel beschreibt anhand des Beispiels der Traisenflusslandschaft im Bereich der Stadt St. Pölten die parallel verlaufenden und sich gegenseitig beeinflussenden Prozesse von Landnutzungsänderung, Siedlungsentwicklung und Ausbau technischer Hochwasserschutzmaßnahmen. Im räumlichen und zeitlichen Verlauf der Siedlungsentwicklung St. Pöltens in den Traisenauen waren Industrialisierung, Urbanisierung, städtische Planung und technische Hochwasserschutzpraktiken treibende Faktoren. Die Stadt dehnte sich im 20. Jahrhundert kontinuierlich in die Traisenauen aus. Diese Expansion beschränkte sich zunächst auf die Ränder des HQ

-Abflussraums, während entlang der seit 1909 existierenden Hochwasserschutzdämme bis 1960 ein Grünland- bzw. Auwaldstreifen verblieb. Dieser wurde bewusst von Bebauung freigehalten und bei größeren Hochwässern überschwemmt. Nach dem Hochwasser von 1959 gab die Stadt auch die traisennahen Flächen als Bauzonen frei. Diese Entscheidung fiel parallel zum Entschluss, den Hochwasserschutz auf ein 100-jährliches Abflussereignis auszubauen. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten entstanden auch direkt an der Traisen dauerhafte Wohngebäude und -siedlungen. Aktuell stellen die vorhandenen Nutzungen sowie die dadurch verursachten ökologischen Folgen das Gewässermanagement vor große Herausforderungen. Diese können nur mithilfe von einzugsgebietsbezogener Planung, der Integration von vielfältigen Anforderungen inklusive der Ökologie und der Berücksichtigung der Raumplanung als Steuerungsinstrument gelöst werden.

Zusammenfassung
Der Artikel „LIFE+ Traisen: Der lange Weg zum neuen Fluss“ beschreibt die Geschichte der Entwicklungen und notwendigen Maßnahmen von den ersten Ideen bis über den Projektstart hinaus.
...Das Vorhaben „Neue Traisen“ ist eines der größten ökologischen Flussbauprojekte in Österreich bzw. Europa. Ziel war die Herstellung einer Flusslandschaft in Niederösterreich mit einem 9,5 km langen, neuen Flusslauf und dessen Mündung bei der Donau. Obwohl der Bau selbst effektiv und effizient in nur 3 Jahren ausgeführt werden konnte, dauerten Konzeption, Planung, Finanzierung und Genehmigungen der Behörden über 15 Jahre. Das besonders gut gelungene aber herausfordernde Projekt konnte nur durch Zusammenarbeit vieler Beteiligter und durch eine gut organisierte Projektleitung realisiert werden.
