The formation of well-defined and functional three-dimensional (3D) structures by buckling of thin sheets subjected to spatially nonuniform stresses is common in biological morphogenesis and has ...become a subject of great interest in synthetic systems, as such programmable shape-morphing materials hold promise in areas including drug delivery, biomedical devices, soft robotics, and biomimetic systems. Given their ability to undergo large changes in swelling in response to a wide variety of stimuli, hydrogels have naturally emerged as a key type of material in this field. Of particular interest are hybrid systems containing rigid inclusions that can define both the anisotropy and spatial nonuniformity of swelling as well as nanoparticulate additives that can enhance the responsiveness and functionality of the material. In this Account, we discuss recent progress in approaches to achieve well-defined shape morphing in hydrogel hybrids. First, we provide an overview of materials and methods that facilitate fabrication of such systems and outline the geometry and mechanics behind shape morphing of thin sheets. We then discuss how patterning of stiff inclusions within soft responsive hydrogels can be used to program both bending and swelling, thereby providing access to a wide array of complex 3D forms. The use of discretely patterned stiff regions to provide an effective composite response offers distinct advantages in terms of scalability and ease of fabrication compared with approaches based on smooth gradients within a single layer of responsive material. We discuss a number of recent advances wherein control of the mechanical properties and geometric characteristics of patterned stiff elements enables the formation of 3D shapes, including origami-inspired structures, concatenated helical frameworks, and surfaces with nonzero Gaussian curvature. Next, we outline how the inclusion of functional elements such as nanoparticles can enable unique pathways to programmable and even reprogrammable shape-morphing materials. We focus to a large extent on photothermally reprogrammable systems that include one of a variety of additives that serve to efficiently absorb light and convert it into heat, thereby driving the response of a temperature-sensitive hydrogel. Such systems are advantageous in that patterns of light can be defined with very high spatial and temporal resolution in addition to offering the potential for wavelength-selective addressability of multiple different inclusions. We highlight recent advances in the preparation of light-responsive hybrid systems capable of undergoing reprogrammable bending and buckling into well-defined 3D shapes. In addition, we describe several examples where shape tuning of hybrid systems enables control over the motion of responsive hydrogel-based materials. Finally, we offer our perspective on open challenges and future areas of interest for the field.
Abstract
We present full-volume cosmological simulations, using the moving-mesh code arepo to study the coevolution of dust and galaxies. We extend the dust model in arepo to include thermal ...sputtering of grains and investigate the evolution of the dust mass function, the cosmic distribution of dust beyond the interstellar medium and the dependence of dust-to-stellar mass ratio on galactic properties. The simulated dust mass function is well described by a Schechter fit and lies closest to observations at z = 0. The radial scaling of projected dust surface density out to distances of 10 Mpc around galaxies with magnitudes 17 < i < 21 is similar to that seen in Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, albeit with a lower normalization. At z = 0, the predicted dust density of Ωdust ≈ 1.3 × 10−6 lies in the range of Ωdust values seen in low-redshift observations. We find that the dust-to-stellar mass ratio anticorrelates with stellar mass for galaxies living along the star formation main sequence. Moreover, we estimate the 850 μm number density functions for simulated galaxies and analyse the relation between dust-to-stellar flux and mass ratios at z = 0. At high redshift, our model fails to produce enough dust-rich galaxies, and this tension is not alleviated by adopting a top-heavy initial mass function. We do not capture a decline in Ωdust from z = 2 to 0, which suggests that dust production mechanisms more strongly dependent on star formation may help to produce the observed number of dusty galaxies near the peak of cosmic star formation.
While acute respiratory tract infections can trigger cardiovascular events, the differential effect of specific organisms is unknown. This is important to guide vaccine policy.Using national ...infection surveillance data linked to the Scottish Morbidity Record, we identified adults with a first myocardial infarction or stroke from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2014 and a record of laboratory-confirmed respiratory infection during this period. Using self-controlled case series analysis, we generated age- and season-adjusted incidence ratios (IRs) for myocardial infarction (n=1227) or stroke (n=762) after infections compared with baseline time.We found substantially increased myocardial infarction rates in the week after
and influenza virus infection: adjusted IRs for days 1-3 were 5.98 (95% CI 2.47-14.4) and 9.80 (95% CI 2.37-40.5), respectively. Rates of stroke after infection were similarly high and remained elevated to 28 days: day 1-3 adjusted IRs 12.3 (95% CI 5.48-27.7) and 7.82 (95% CI 1.07-56.9) for
and influenza virus, respectively. Although other respiratory viruses were associated with raised point estimates for both outcomes, only the day 4-7 estimate for stroke reached statistical significance.We showed a marked cardiovascular triggering effect of
and influenza virus, which highlights the need for adequate pneumococcal and influenza vaccine uptake. Further research is needed into vascular effects of noninfluenza respiratory viruses.
The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has systematically identified 81 high-redshift, strongly gravitationally lensed, dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) in a 2500 square degree cosmological ...millimeter-wave survey. We present the final spectroscopic redshift survey of this flux-limited (S870 m > 25 mJy) sample, initially selected at 1.4 mm. The redshift survey was conducted with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array across the 3 mm spectral window, targeting carbon monoxide line emission. By combining these measurements with ancillary data, the SPT sample is now spectroscopically complete, with redshifts spanning 1.9 < z < 6.9 and a median of . We present the millimeter through far-infrared photometry and spectral energy density fits for all sources, along with their inferred intrinsic properties. Comparing the properties of the SPT sources to the unlensed DSFG population, we demonstrate that the SPT-selected DSFGs represent the most extreme infrared-luminous galaxies, even after accounting for strong gravitational lensing. The SPT sources have a median star formation rate of and a median dust mass of . However, the inferred gas depletion timescales of the SPT sources are comparable to those of unlensed DSFGs, once redshift is taken into account. This SPT sample contains roughly half of the known spectroscopically confirmed DSFGs at z > 5, making this the largest sample of high-redshift DSFGs to date, and enabling the "high-redshift tail" of extremely luminous DSFGs to be measured. Though galaxy formation models struggle to account for the SPT redshift distribution, the larger sample statistics from this complete and well-defined survey will help inform future theoretical efforts.
To identify early indications of waning antibody levels to the spike protein (S-antibody) after complete two-dose vaccination, we did a cross-sectional analysis of fully vaccinated adults (aged ≥18 ...years) who submitted capillary blood samples for Virus Watch, a longitudinal community cohort study in England and Wales.4 The study received ethical approval from the Hampstead NHS Health Research Authority Ethics Committee (20/HRA/2320). Sera were tested using Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S and N electro-chemiluminescent immunoassays (Roche Diagnostics, Basel, Switzerland); the S assay targets total antibodies to the S1 subunit of the spike protein (range 0·4–25 000 units per mL U/mL), whereas the N assay targets total antibodies to the full-length nucleocapsid protein, which we took as a proxy for previous SARS-CoV-2 infection (specificity 99·8% 99·3–100).5 Serological results were linked with demographic and clinical information collected at enrolment and with weekly self-reported vaccination status. 605 adults submitted a valid sample on June 14–15, 2021. In the context of recent advice in support of booster vaccinations from the UK's Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation,13 and given the potentially rapid S-antibody decline suggested by these data, heterologous regimens, which preliminary data suggest elicit stronger antibody and T-cell responses,14,15 might provide more durable immunity and greater protection against emerging variants.
Light transmission aggregometry (LTA) is the most common method used to assess platelet function. However, there is no universal standard for its performance. The Platelet Physiology Subcommittee of ...the Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis formed a working party of experts with the aim of producing a series of consensus recommendations for standardizing LTA. Due to a lack of investigations that directly compared different methodologies to perform LTA studies, there were insufficient data to develop evidence-based guidelines. Therefore, the RAND method was used, which obtains a formal consensus among experts about the appropriateness of health care interventions, particularly when scientific evidence is absent, scarce and/or heterogeneous. Using this approach, each expert scored as "appropriate", "uncertain" or "inappropriate" a series of statements about the practice of LTA, which included pre-analytical variables, blood collection, blood processing, methodological details, choice of agonists and the evaluation and reporting of results. After presentation and public discussion at SSC meetings, the assessments were further refined to produce final consensus recommendations. Before delivering the recommendations, a formal literature review was performed using a series of defined search terms about LTA. Of the 1830 potentially relevant studies identified, only 14 publications were considered to be actually relevant for review. Based upon the additional information, 6 consensus statements were slightly modified. The final statements were presented and discussed at the SSC Meeting in Cairo (2010) and formed the basis of a consensus document, which is the subject of the present report.
