Analysis of the multispecific B alpha mating-type locus of Schizophyllum commune provided evidence that pheromones and pheromone receptors govern recognition of self versus non-self and sexual ...development in this homobasidiomycetous fungus. Four subclones of an 8.2 kb genomic fragment carrying B alpha 1 specificity induced B-regulated sexual morphogenesis when introduced into a strain with one of the eight compatible B alpha specificities that are known to exist in nature. One of these clones, which activated all other B alpha specificities, contains a gene termed bar1. The predicted protein product of bar1, as well as that of bar2, a homologous gene isolated from a B alpha 2 strain, has significant homology to known fungal pheromone receptor proteins in the rhodopsin-like superfamily of G protein-linked receptors. The other three active B alpha 1 clones were subcloned further to identify the minimal active element in each clone. Every active subclone contains a putative pheromone gene ending in a signal for possible isoprenylation. A message of approximately 600 bp was observed for one of these genes, bap1(1). This paper presents the first evidence for a system of multiple pheromones and pheromone receptors as a basis for multispecific mating types in a fungus.
Nd, O, and Pb isotope data from southern New Brunswick suggest that 625 to 360 Ma granitoid plutons contain a major juvenile component and small amounts of Middle Proterozoic or older crustal ...material. Plutons fall into four major age groups: 600-630, 540-560, 422-430, and 367-396 Ma. The first and third groups can be related to subduction in other parts of the Appalachian orogen, but most of the second and fourth magmatic pulses have lithologic associations and chemistry not readily reconciled to subduction. The timing and volume of magmatism, presence of mafic end-members, and juvenile signatures in the plutons suggest that crustal delamination may have been involved. Little evidence exists for extensive Middle Proterozoic or older continental crust beneath the Avalon Zone, which consists mainly of Late Proterozoic continental margin arc material intruded by younger granitoid plutons that include a major mantle component. This differs from contiguous Gander and Meguma Zones in which plutons contain a major volume of recycled old (>1.5 Ga) crust. A region with a greater old crustal component in the northwest part of Avalon Zone (Brookville Terrane) may represent a link to the enigmatic "Central Crustal Block" beneath Gander Zone.

Mikroreaktoren werden in der chemischen Industrie bei der Miniaturisierung verfahrenstechnischer Prozesse bereits seit langem erfolgreich eingesetzt. Forschungsseitig leisteten dazu ...Hochschulen und Universitäten im Rahmen von Schwerpunktprogrammen einen großen Beitrag. Auf dieser Grundlage und der Auswertung neuester Literatur wurde im Institut für Technische Chemie und Umweltchemie eine Mikroreaktorversuchsapparatur entwickelt und aufgebaut. Ausgehend von den theoretischen Grundlagen lernen die Studierenden am Beispiel eines T‐Mischers den Einfluss der wichtigsten technologischen Parameter auf den Ablauf eines durch den Stofftransport limitierten Reaktionsprozesses kennen. Besonderer Wert wurde dabei auf die Visualisierung und die mathematische Auswertung der Qualität des Mischvorgangs gelegt. Dieses gelang unter Verwendung eines Stereomikroskops, einer handelsüblichen Videokamera und der Anwendung eines dafür angepassten Computerprogramms. Die erzielten Ergebnisse werden dargestellt und ausführlich diskutiert.

During the shutdown of the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2013-2014, an additional pixel layer was installed between the existing Pixel detector of the ATLAS experiment and a new, smaller radius beam ...pipe. The motivation for this new pixel layer, the Insertable B-Layer (IBL), was to maintain or improve the robustness and performance of the ATLAS tracking system, given the higher instantaneous and integrated luminosities realised following the shutdown. Because of the extreme radiation and collision rate environment, several new radiation-tolerant sensor and electronic technologies were utilised for this layer. This paper reports on the IBL construction and integration prior to its operation in the ATLAS detector.
