These same factors are also known to underlie events that govern higher-order cognitive processing, including learning and memory formation, and often through phylogenetically conserved pathways. This suggests that factors which contribute to adaptive responses to changing environmental stimuli are likely derived from basic evolutionarily ancient processes, and underscores the importance of using both invertebrate and vertebrate models to study the interaction of chronobiology and cognitive processing. This issue highlights current views along with original research on sleep and circadian features of plasticity and memory in multiple species, models, and systems.- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication. Deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) devices separate micrometer-scale particles in solution based on their size using a laminar microfluidic flow in an array of obstacles. We investigate array ...geometries with rational row-shift fractions in DLD devices by use of a simple model including both advection and diffusion. Our model predicts novel multi-directional sorting modes that could be experimentally tested in high-throughput DLD devices containing obstacles that are much smaller than the separation between obstacles.

In conversation, American graphic designer Jason Santa Maria discusses some of the important elements of good design with a particular emphasis upon font choice. In an introduction to the article, ...the author explains that Maria is the founder of the Brooklyn-based design studio Mighty; he is a faculty member in the MFA Interaction Design program at the School of Visual Arts and the founder of Typedia, an online encyclopedia of type-faces. Santa Maria states that the use of type is becoming commonly understood as an important skill; he describes the software Typekit which allows a wider variety of fonts to be used on websites; and he states that he wants screen typography to become an integral part of design.
In the wake of the Revolutions of 1989, Hungary was long considered one of the "success stories" of post-communist transition to liberal democracy. Yet in recent years the Hungarian government, under ...the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, has pioneered a new conception of "illiberal democracy." In a July 2014 speech, Orban indeed declared that "the era of liberal democracies is over." Similar declarations can be heard in other parts of post-communist Eastern Europe. The Hungarian Patient: Social Opposition to an Illiberal Democracy, is a collection of essays by Hungarian social scientists and intellectuals reflecting on both the sources of this emergent illiberalism and the sources of opposition to it. Because it is important for American political scientists to understand the way their colleagues in other parts of the world reflect on the challenges of democracy, and because the Hungarian situation is significant for the future of Europe and the EU, we have invited a wide range of scholars to comment on the book and on its topic—the significance of the emergence of "illiberal democracy" in Hungary and in Europe.
