The M dwarf GJ 436 hosts a transiting warm Neptune known to experience atmospheric escape. Previous observations revealed the presence of a giant hydrogen exosphere transiting the star for more than ...5 h, and absorbing up to 56% of the flux in the blue wing of the stellar Lyman-α line of neutral hydrogen (H i Lyα). The unexpected size of this comet-like exosphere prevented observing the full transit of its tail. In this Letter, we present new Lyα observations of GJ 436 obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) instrument onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The stability of the Lyα line over six years allowed us to combine these new observations with archival data sets, substantially expanding the coverage of the exospheric transit. Hydrogen atoms in the tail of the exospheric cloud keep occulting the star for 10–25 h after the transit of the planet, remarkably confirming a previous prediction based on 3D numerical simulations with the EVaporating Exoplanet code (EVE). This result strengthens the interpretation that the exosphere of GJ 436b is shaped by both radiative braking and charge exchanges with the stellar wind. We further report flux decreases of 15 ± 2% and 47 ± 10% in the red wing of the Lyα line and in the line of ionised silicon (Si iii). Despite some temporal variability possibly linked with stellar activity, these two signals occur during the exospheric transit and could be of planetary origin. Follow-up observations will be required to assess the possibility that the redshifted Lyα and Si iii absorption signatures arise from interactions between the exospheric flow and the magnetic field of the star.
Context.
Over large timescales, a terrestrial planet may be driven towards spin-orbit synchronous rotation by tidal forces. In this particular configuration, the planet exhibits permanent dayside and ...nightside, which may induce strong day-night temperature gradients. The nightside temperature depends on the efficiency of the day-night heat redistribution and determines the stability of the atmosphere against collapse.
Aims.
To better constrain the atmospheric stability, climate, and surface conditions of rocky planets located in the habitable zone of their host star, it is thus crucial to understand the complex mechanism of heat redistribution.
Methods.
Building on early works and assuming dry thermodynamics, we developed a hierarchy of analytic models taking into account the coupling between radiative transfer, dayside convection, and large-scale atmospheric circulation in the case of slowly rotating planets. There are two types of these models: a zero-dimensional two-layer approach and a two-column radiative-convective-subsiding-upwelling model. They yield analytical solutions and scaling laws characterising the dependence of the collapse pressure on physical features, which are compared to the results obtained by early works using 3D global climate models (GCMs).
Results.
The analytical theory captures (i) the dependence of temperatures on atmospheric opacities and scattering in the shortwave and in the longwave, (ii) the behaviour of the collapse pressure observed in GCM simulations at low stellar fluxes that are due to the non-linear dependence of the atmospheric opacity on the longwave optical depth at the planet’s surface, (iii) the increase of stability generated by dayside sensible heating, and (iv) the decrease of stability induced by the increase of the planet size.
Recent research has provided mechanistic insight into the important contributions of the gut microbiota to vertebrate biology, but questions remain about the evolutionary processes that have shaped ...this symbiosis. In the present study, we showed in experiments with gnotobiotic mice that the evolution of Lactobacillus reuteri with rodents resulted in the emergence of host specialization. To identify genomic events marking adaptations to the murine host, we compared the genome of the rodent isolate L. reuteri 100-23 with that of the human isolate L. reuteri F275, and we identified hundreds of genes that were specific to each strain. In order to differentiate true host-specific genome content from strain-level differences, comparative genome hybridizations were performed to query 57 L. reuteri strains originating from six different vertebrate hosts in combination with genome sequence comparisons of nine strains encompassing five phylogenetic lineages of the species. This approach revealed that rodent strains, although showing a high degree of genomic plasticity, possessed a specific genome inventory that was rare or absent in strains from other vertebrate hosts. The distinct genome content of L. reuteri lineages reflected the niche characteristics in the gastrointestinal tracts of their respective hosts, and inactivation of seven out of eight representative rodent-specific genes in L. reuteri 100-23 resulted in impaired ecological performance in the gut of mice. The comparative genomic analyses suggested fundamentally different trends of genome evolution in rodent and human L. reuteri populations, with the former possessing a large and adaptable pan-genome while the latter being subjected to a process of reductive evolution. In conclusion, this study provided experimental evidence and a molecular basis for the evolution of host specificity in a vertebrate gut symbiont, and it identified genomic events that have shaped this process.
ABSTRACT Due to its proximity, SN 1987A offers a unique opportunity to directly observe the geometry of a stellar explosion as it unfolds. Here we present spectral and imaging observations of SN ...1987A obtained ∼10,000 days after the explosion with HST/STIS and VLT/SINFONI at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. These observations allow us to produce the most detailed 3D map of H to date, the first 3D maps for Ca ii , O i , and Mg ii , as well as new maps for Si i+Fe ii and He i 2.058 m. A comparison with previous observations shows that the Si i+Fe ii flux and morphology have not changed significantly during the past ten years, providing evidence that this line is powered by 44Ti. The time evolution of H shows that it is predominantly powered by X-rays from the ring, in agreement with previous findings. All lines that have sufficient signal show a similar large-scale 3D structure, with a north-south asymmetry that resembles a broken dipole. This structure correlates with early observations of asymmetries, showing that there is a global asymmetry that extends from the inner core to the outer envelope. On smaller scales, the two brightest lines, H and Si i+Fe ii 1.644 m, show substructures at the level of ∼200-1000 km s-1and clear differences in their 3D geometries. We discuss these results in the context of explosion models and the properties of dust in the ejecta.

Our atmospheric retrieval on the complete emission spectrum supports the presence of a temperature inversion, which can be explained by the presence of VO and possibly TiO and FeH. The strong planetary emission at short wavelengths could arise from an H
−
continuum.

Over the duration of the Kepler mission, KIC 8462852 was observed to undergo irregularly shaped, aperiodic dips in flux of up to ∼20 per cent. The dipping activity can last for between 5 and 80 d. We ...characterize the object with high-resolution spectroscopy, spectral energy distribution fitting, radial velocity measurements, high-resolution imaging, and Fourier analyses of the Kepler light curve. We determine that KIC 8462852 is a typical main-sequence F3 V star that exhibits no significant IR excess, and has no very close interacting companions. In this paper, we describe various scenarios to explain the dipping events observed in the Kepler light curve. We confirm that the dipping signals in the data are not caused by any instrumental or data processing artefact, and thus are astrophysical in origin. We construct scenario-independent constraints on the size and location of a body in the system that are needed to reproduce the observations. We deliberate over several assorted stellar and circumstellar astrophysical scenarios, most of which have problems explaining the data in hand. By considering the observational constraints on dust clumps in orbit around a normal main-sequence star, we conclude that the scenario most consistent with the data in hand is the passage of a family of exocomet or planetesimal fragments, all of which are associated with a single previous break-up event, possibly caused by tidal disruption or thermal processing. The minimum total mass associated with these fragments likely exceeds 10−6 M⊕, corresponding to an original rocky body of >100 km in diameter. We discuss the necessity of future observations to help interpret the system.
We performed a Phase I/II clinical trial to study the feasibility, toxicity and efficacy of allogeneic cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cell expansion, and treatment for patients with haematological ...malignancies who relapsed after allogeneic haemopoietic SCT (allo-HSCT). Allogeneic CIK cells were successfully generated for a total of 24 patients, including those from patients' own leukapheresis products in 5 patients who had no access to further donor cells. The median CD3(+) T-cell expansion was 9.33 (1.3-38.97) fold, and CD3(+)CD56(+) natural killer (NK)-like T-cell expansion was 27.77 (2.59-438.93) fold. A total of 55 infusions were done for 16 patients who had either failed or progressed after initial response to various individualized chemotherapy regimens and donor lymphocyte infusion (DLI), at doses ranging from 10 to 200 million CD3(+) cells/kg. Response attributable to CIK cell infusion was observed in five patients. These included two with ALL, two with Hodgkin's disease (HD) and one with AML, and two of whom had a response sustained for more than 2 years. Acute GVHD occurred in three and was easily treatable. This study provides some evidence suggestive of the efficacy of allogeneic CIK cells even after failure of DLI in some cases.
The MAPK p38α was proposed to be a prominent promoter of skeletal muscle aging. The skeletal muscle tissue is composed of various muscle types, and it is not known if p38α is associated with aging in ...all of them. It is also not known if p38α is associated with aging of other tissues. JNK and ERK were also proposed to be associated with aging of several tissues. Nevertheless, the pattern of p38α, JNK, and ERK activity during aging was not documented. Here, we documented the levels of phosphorylated/active p38α, Erk1/2, and JNKs in several organs as well as the soleus, tibialis anterior, quadriceps, gastrocnemius, and EDL muscles of 1-, 3-, 6-, 13-, 18-, and 24-month-old mice. We report that in most tissues and skeletal muscles, the MAPKs' activity does not change in the course of aging. In most tissues and muscles, p38α is in fact active at younger ages. The quadriceps and the lungs are exceptions, where p38α is significantly active only in mice 13 months old or older. Curiously, levels of active JNK and ERKs are also elevated in aged lungs and quadriceps. RNA-seq analysis of the quadriceps during aging revealed downregulation of proteins related to the extra-cellular matrix (ECM) and ERK signaling. A panel of mRNAs encoding cell cycle inhibitors and senescence-associated proteins, considered to be aging markers, was not found to be elevated. It seems that the pattern of MAPKs' activation in aging, as well as expression of known 'aging' components, are tissue- and muscle type-specific, supporting a notion that the process of aging is tissue- and even cell-specific.
