A Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), iron-benzenetricarboxylate (Fe(BTC)), has been studied for the adsorptive removal of azo-dye Orange II from aqueous solutions, where the effect of various parameters ...was tested and isotherm and kinetic models were suggested. The adsorption capacities of Fe(BTC) were much higher than those of an activated carbon. The experimental data can be best described by the Langmuir isotherm model (R² > 0.997) and revealed the ability of Fe(BTC) to adsorb 435 mg of Orange II per gram of adsorbent at the optimal conditions. The kinetics of Orange II adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating the coexistence of physisorption and chemisorption, with intra-particle diffusion being the rate controlling step. The thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption of Orange II was feasible, spontaneous and exothermic process (-25.53 kJ·mol
). The high recovery of the dye showed that Fe(BTC) can be employed as an effective and reusable adsorbent for the removal of Orange II from aqueous solutions and showed the economic interest of this adsorbent material for environmental purposes.
Abstract The many microbial communities around us form interactive and dynamic ecosystems called microbiomes. Though concealed from the naked eye, microbiomes govern and influence macroscopic systems ...including human health, plant resilience, and biogeochemical cycling. Such feats have attracted interest from the scientific community, which has recently turned to machine learning and deep learning methods to interrogate the microbiome and elucidate the relationships between its composition and function. Here, we provide an overview of how the latest microbiome studies harness the inductive prowess of artificial intelligence methods. We start by highlighting that microbiome data – being compositional, sparse, and high-dimensional – necessitates special treatment. We then introduce traditional and novel methods and discuss their strengths and applications. Finally, we discuss the outlook of machine and deep learning pipelines, focusing on bottlenecks and considerations to address them.
In this work, we present an investigation concerning the evaluation of the catalytic properties of Ni nanoparticles supported on ZrO2, SiO2, and MgAl2O4 for CO2 hydrogenation to methane. The supports ...were prepared by coprecipitation and sol-gel, while Ni was incorporated by impregnation (10–20 wt %). X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, temperature-programmed reduction, H2 pulse chemisorption, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were the main characterization techniques employed. A laboratory fixed-bed reactor operated at atmospheric pressure, a temperature range of 350–500 °C, and a stoichiometric H2/CO2 molar ratio was used for catalyst evaluation. The most outstanding results were obtained with nickel catalysts supported on ZrO2 with CO2 conversions of close to 60%, and selectivity to methane formation was 100% on a dry basis, with high stability after 250 h of reaction time. The majority presence of tetragonal zirconia, as well as the strong Ni–ZrO2 interaction, were responsible for the high catalytic performance of the Ni/ZrO2 catalysts.
Recombinant proteins expressed in E. coli are frequently purified by immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC). By means of this technique, tagged proteins containing a polyhistidine sequence ...can be obtained up to 95% pure in a single step, but some host proteins also bind with great affinity to metal ions and contaminate the sample. A way to overcome this problem is to include a second tag that is recognized by a preexistent monoclonal antibody (mAb) in the gene encoding the target protein, allowing further purification. With this strategy, the recombinant protein can be directly used as target in capture ELISA using plates sensitized with the corresponding mAb. As a proof of concept, in this study we engineered a Trichinella-derived tag (MTFSVPIS, recognized by mAb US9) into a His-tagged recombinant Fasciola antigen (rFhLAP) to make a new chimeric recombinant protein (rUS9-FhLAP), and tested its specificity in capture and indirect ELISAs with sera from sheep and cattle. FhLAP was selected since it was previously reported to be immunogenic in ruminants and is expressed in soluble form in E. coli, which anticipates a higher contamination by host proteins than proteins expressed in inclusion bodies. Our results showed that a large number of sera from non-infected ruminants (mainly cattle) reacted in indirect ELISA with rUS9-FhLAP after single-step purification by IMAC, but that this reactivity disappeared testing the same antigen in capture ELISA with mAb US9. These results demonstrate that the 6XHis and US9 tags can be combined when double purification of recombinant proteins is required.

Retrospective, comparative, cross-sectional study. The medical records of patients admitted for intertrochanteric fracture between August 1st 2019 and May 31st 2021 were reviewed to extract data regarding clinical characteristics, causes of surgery delay, and hospitalization length. Regression models were used to distinguish potential predictor variables on surgical delay and hospitalization length.
362 cases with intertrochanteric fractures were surgically treated during the study period. The mean time from admission to surgery was 4.2 ± 3.8 days. in 33,1% of the cases the surgery was performed within the first 48 h. A history of coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic kidney disease were potential predictors of surgery delay (p<0.005). Only CHD was independently associated with surgery delay (OR 5.267 95%CI 1.201-23.100); p = 0.028). Hospitalization was extended in cases where surgery was performed after 48 h (10,1 ± 6,2 days vs 5,9 ± 3,0 days; p<0.001). The regression model showed that for each day passed from fracture to admission and each day from admission to surgery, the hospitalization duration increased by 3,7 and 4,4 days, respectively.
Patients with intertrochanteric fractures have comorbidities that potentially delay their surgical treatment and prolong hospitalization duration. The efficient use of hospital resources and the proper early evaluation of cardiac pathologies conducted during admission, could positively impact the achievement of surgical treatment within the first 48 h after the fracture, reducing hospitalization duration.
The study of the deactivation of HY zeolites in the dehydration reaction of glycerol to acrolein has represented a challenge for the design of new catalysts. HY zeolites with SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratios ...between 3.5 and 80 were studied. The solids were characterized by XRD, N2 physisorption, SEM-EDXS, Raman and UV-vis spectroscopies, infrared spectroscopy of pyridine (FTIR-Py) and catalytic activity tests from 250 °C to 325 °C. It was found that the total amount of acid sites per unit area of catalyst decreased as the SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio increased from 3.5 to 80, resulting in the decrease in the initial glycerol conversion. The initial acrolein selectivity was promoted with the increase of the Brønsted/Lewis acid sites ratio at any reaction temperature. The deactivation tests showed that the catalyst lifetime depended on the pore structure, improving with the presence of large surface areas as evidenced by the deactivation rate constants. The characterization of the deactivated catalysts by XRD, N2 physisorption and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the deposition of coke resulted in the total obstruction of micropores and the partial blockage of mesopores. Moreover, the presence of large mesopores and surface areas allowed the amount of coke deposited at the catalyst surface to be reduced.
The antifungal activity of palindromic peptide RWQWRWQWR and its derivatives was evaluated against clinical isolates of Candida albicans and C. auris. Also, Bidens pilosa ethanolic extracts of leaves ...and stem were evaluated. Furthermore, combinations of peptide, extract, and/or fluconazole (FLC) were evaluated. The cytotoxicity of peptides and extracts in erythrocytes and fibroblasts was determined. The original palindromic peptide, some derivative peptides, and the ethanolic extract of leaves of B. pilosa exhibited the highest activity in some of the strains evaluated. Synergy was obtained between the peptide and the FLC against C. auris 435. The combination of the extract and the original palindromic peptide against C. albicans SC5314, C. auris 435, and C. auris 537 decreased the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) by a factor of between 4 and 16. These mixtures induced changes in cell morphology, such as deformations on the cell surface. The results suggest that the combination of RWQWRWQWR and B. pilosa extract is an alternative for enhancing antifungal activity and decreasing cytotoxicity and costs and should be considered to be a promising strategy for treating diseases caused by Candida spp.
A set of Y-type zeolites with Si/Al atomic ratios between 7–45 were studied as catalysts in the aminocyclization reaction between acrolein and ammonia to produce pyridine and 3-picoline. The ...catalytic activity tests at 360 °C revealed that the acrolein conversion increased in the order Z45 < ZY34 < ZY7 < ZY17, in agreement with the increase of the total acidity per gram of catalyst. In all cases, pyridine bases and cracking products (acetaldehyde and formaldehyde) were detected in the outflow from the reactor. The total yield of pyridines was inversely proportional to the total acidity for the catalysts, which presented large surface areas and micro- and mesoporosity. The selectivity towards 3-picoline was favored when using catalysts with a Brønsted/Lewis acid sites ratio close to 1. The formation of pyridine occurred more selectively over Lewis acid sites than Brønsted acid sites. The deactivation tests showed that the time on stream of the catalysts depended on the textural properties of zeolites, i.e., large pore volume and large BET area, as evidenced by the deactivation rate constants and the characterization of the spent catalysts. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were determined by XRD, UV-vis, and Raman spectroscopies, infrared spectroscopy with adsorbed pyridine, N2 physisorption, and SEM-EDXS. After the reaction, the spent catalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, TGA, and SEM-EDXS, indicating that the uniform deposition of polyaromatic species on the catalyst surface and within the porous system resulted in the loss of activity.
Plants and their microbiomes, including plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), can work as a team to reduce the adverse effects of different types of stress, including drought, heat, cold, and heavy ...metals stresses, as well as salinity in soils. These abiotic stresses are reviewed here, with an emphasis on salinity and its negative consequences on crops, due to their wide presence in cultivable soils around the world. Likewise, the factors that stimulate the salinity of soils and their impact on microbial diversity and plant physiology were also analyzed. In addition, the saline soils that exist in Mexico were analyzed as a case study. We also made some proposals for a more extensive use of bacterial bioinoculants in agriculture, particularly in developing countries. Finally, PGPB are highly relevant and extremely helpful in counteracting the toxic effects of soil salinity and improving crop growth and production; therefore, their use should be intensively promoted.
