The objective of this study was to associate the 1016G > A variant of the melanocortin-4 receptor gene with lamb's weight, growth, and meat quality in the Colombian hair sheep breed.
A total of 168 ...lambs, weights were measured at birth weight (BW), at weaning adjusted weaning weight (AWW), at 6 months adjusted weight (AW180), at slaughter adjusted slaughter weight (ASW), daily weight gain preweaning daily gain (preWDG), and postweaning daily gain (postWDG) weaning, and after slaughter, pH, texture, and cook-loss (CL) in the
(LTL) muscle according to the American Meat Science Association methodology. The 1016G > A genotypes were obtained by sequencing. Genotypic and allele frequencies, heterozygosities, and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) were estimated. Using a generalized linear model, the genotype and the allelic substitution effect were associated with the evaluated traits.
The heterozygous genotype (0.48) and G allele (0.61) were the most frequent. Heterozygosities were similar (0.47), indicating HWE. The genotype affected the BW (
< 0.05), with a higher value for the GG genotype (2.69 kg). AWW (12.75 kg), AW180 (19.67 kg), and ASW (31.21 kg) weights and daily weight gain (preWDG = 115.41 gm; postWDG = 96.16 gm) were not associated. Average pH, Warner-Bratzler shear force, and CL were 5.75 units, 49.46 N, and 32.02%, with no genotype effect. The G > A substitution only affected BW at -388 gm (
< 0.05).
The 1016G > A variant is polymorphic and affects the BW but not other growth traits or the meat quality of the LTL muscle.
Early embryo development is driven first by the maternal RNAs and proteins accumulated during the oocyte's cytoplasmic maturation and then after the embryo genome activation. In mammalian cells, ATP ...generation occurs via oxidative pathways or by glycolysis, whereas in embryonic stem cells, the consumption of glucose, pyruvate, lipids, and amino acids results in ATP synthesis. Although the bovine embryo has energy reserves in glycogen and lipids, the glycogen concentration is deficient. Conversely, lipids represent the most abundant energy reservoir of bovine embryos, where lipid droplets-containing triacylglycerols are the main fatty acid stores. Oocytes of many mammalian species contain comparatively high amounts of lipids stored as droplets in the ooplasm. L-carnitine has been described as a cofactor that facilitates the mobilization of fatty acids present in the oocyte's cytoplasm into the mitochondria to facilitate β-oxidation processes. However, the L-carnitine effects by addition to media in the in vitro produced embryos on the quality are highly disputed and contradictory by different researchers. This review's objective was to explore the effect that the addition of L-carnitine on culture media could have on the overall bovine embryo production in vitro, from the oocyte metabolism to the modulation of gene expression in the developing embryos.
Recognition of the genes that influence livestock production characteristics has allowed researchers to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with phenotypic traits that ...contribute to higher productivity. The objective of this research was to associate SNPs in the genes calpain (
CAPN
), calpastatin (
CAST
), leptin (
LEP
), growth hormone (
GH
), and insulin-like growth factor 1 (
IGF-1
) with the growth characteristics birth weight (BW), weaning weight adjusted at 120 days (WW), daily pre-weaning gain (PRADG), adjusted weight at 210 days (AW210), and daily post-weaning gain (POADG), and the measures of the
Longissimus dorsi
muscle based on ultrasound, namely loin eye area (LEA), loin depth (LD), and back fat thickness (BFT), in Colombian hair sheep (OPC). The association between phenotypic and genotypic characteristics was made using the PLINK v.1.9 program using linear regression analysis. There was a statistically significant association (
p
< 0.05) between the
CAST
polymorphism (M/N) and BW, a tendency (
p
= 0.07) for an association between the T → C SNP of the
CAPN
gene and AW210, and a trend (
p
= 0.07) for an association between the A → G SNP of the IGF-1 locus and POADG. The LEA and BFT characteristics were not associated with a SNP, while PL was significantly affected by SNPs in the
GH
and
IGF-1
genes. In conclusion, all the genes evaluated were polymorphic, the
CAST
gene significantly influenced BW, and the
GH
and
IGF-1
genes were associated with LD characteristics. These results could be used to identify individuals with favorable genotypes to implement a marker-assisted selection method.
Objective. To characterize two SNP-type genetic polymorphisms in the GLI1 (rs411868094) and IL20RA (rs419463995) genes, candidates for resistance against gastrointestinal parasites in two biotypes of ...Colombian hair sheep. Materials and methods. From the DNA bank of the Animal Genetics Laboratory of the University of Sucre, 167 samples, belonging to the Ethiopian (n=94) and Sudan (n=73) biotypes, were analyzed by PCR and subsequent bidirectional sequencing of two SNPs in the GLI1 (T>G) and IL20RA (G>A) genes. Allelic and genotypic frequencies, observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity, F index, and Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium deviations (EHW) were calculated using the GENALEX version 6.5 program. Results. For the GLI1 locus, the mean genotypic frequencies were 0.155±0.07, 0.370±0.07, and 0.475±0.07 for GG, GT, and TT, respectively. In the Ethiopian biotype, the highest frequencies of the genotype of interest (GG) were found. For the IL20RA locus, the AA and AG genotypes had similar and the highest frequency (0.465±0.03) compared to the GG genotype (0.110±0.01). The genotype of interest at this locus (AA) was the most frequent in both OPC biotypes. Conclusions. The alleles of interest associated with low FEC had a low frequency for the GLI1 gene, but a high frequency for IL20RA. The Ethiopian OPC biotype showed the highest frequencies of the genotypes of interest.

Objective. To describe growth in Colombian hair sheep (OPC) using the Richards model. Materials and methods. A total of 2086 records were obtained from weighing every 30 days in OPC sheep from birth ...to slaughter and weaning at 90 days. In addition, the sex (S), type of lambing (TP) and time of birth (Eponac) of the animals were considered. The data were analyzed with the Richards model using the NLIN procedure of SAS. Results. The asymptotic weight estimation indicated by parameter A for males was 7.8 kg higher than that of females; in the TP, this same parameter indicated a 22% superiority between single and multiple births; finally, in the Eponac variable, the best weight values corresponded to the rainy season with 5 kg more than the animals born in the dry season. For the K parameter, the reference values oscillate between 0.001 and 0.004 in the variables S, TP and Eponac; as well as the correlation between the A and K parameters, the values are between -0.98 and -0.99 in all the variables studied. Conclusions. The Richards model explained the development of the animals and allowed observing the effect of the variables S, TP and Eponac, evidencing in each of these a slow growth, but with high weights at maturity.

Objective. Predict the carcass weight at the age of benefit in New Zealand rabbits from body measurements. Materials and methods. In 100 males of the New Zealand (NZ) bred commercially for 60±3 days, ...with 12-hour fasting, the live weight (PV) of the dorsal (LCDV) and ventral (LCVV) body length, chest perimeter (PTV), spine length (LLV), spine width (ALV), chest width (ATV) head width (ACV) head length (LCV), thigh perimeter (PMV), length thigh (LMV), arm perimeter (PBV) and arm length (LBV) was taken. The rabbits were sacrificed, their hot carcass (PCC) weighed and the same measures described above were taken in the carcass. The measurements were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The hot carcass performance (RCC) was determined. The correlation coefficients for the PCC variable were estimated. A PCC regression equation was established, with the “Stepwise Regression” procedure. Results. The variables in vivo were more homogeneous than in the carcass animal. The RCC was 54.96±4.03%. The highest correlation found with the PCC was the PV (r= 0.84; p<0.0001). The PTV, PTC, PBV, PBV and LCA showed a positive correlation (p<0.02). The regression equation determinate was Yi = 86.5 + 0.52PV - 0.47LCDV - 12.9ACV (R2= 0.97; Cp-Mallows= 2.62, p<0.01). Conclusions. The RCC is similar to other NZ of similar age. The measurements in the live animal better predict the CCP. These results can be used in animal genetic improvement programs.
