The first reported human case of possible disseminated infection with the insect pathogen Metarrhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae, a fungus which has been used commercially for biocontrol of insects, ...is described. The patient, a 9-year-old boy, had a 5-year history of pre-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia and had been on chemotherapy throughout this period. After 10 days of profound neutropenia, lesions consistent with ecthyma gangrenosum appeared on his arms and legs. M. anisopliae was grown from specimens from three separate sites, collected at different times over a period of 1 month: a skin biopsy, a swab from the base of a lesion, and the core of another skin lesion which spontaneously discharged. The initial skin biopsy also showed histological evidence of epidermal necrosis and dermal invasion with fungal hyphae. A computed-tomography (CT) scan of the chest demonstrated a lesion in the superior segment of the lower lobe of the left lung. A CT scan of the brain revealed a lesion in the left temporoparietal region of the brain, consistent with an abscess. Despite antifungal treatment including liposomal amphotericin and 5-flucytosine, the patient eventually died. The initial portal of entry is unknown, but hematogenous dissemination to the skin appears likely because of the multiple ecthymic lesions, and the appearances of the brain lesion on the CT scan are consistent with a hematogenous fungal abscess.

A colony of chickens carrying the rge mutation was rederived from a ...single heterozygous animal of the original line. The eyes of blind, heterozygous and normal birds were subjected to ophthalmic, morphometric and histopathological examination to confirm and extend published observations. DNA samples were obtained and subjected to a whole genome linkage search.
From 138 classified backcross progeny, 56 birds were blind and 82 sighted. Heterozygous birds were indistinguishable from wild type, but homozygotes had sluggish or unresponsive pupils, posterior sub-capsular lens opacities and an atrophic pecten. The fundus appeared normal with no significant pigmentary disturbance, but axial length and eye weight were increased. Pathology revealed focal retinal lesions. Linkage analysis placed the rge locus in a small region of chicken chromosome 1.
rge is a severe recessive retinal dystrophy in chickens, with associated globe enlargement. Linkage mapping has highlighted chicken chromosome 1 in a region most probably homologous to human chromosomes 7q31-35, 21q21 or 22q12-21. Candidate disease loci include RP10 (IMPDH1) and uncharacterised Ushers (USH1E) and glaucoma (GLC1F) loci.
The benefits of yoga have been studied in different fields, from chronic health conditions to mental disorders, showing that it can help to improve the overall health. In particular, it has been ...proven that yoga also improves the autonomic function. Heart rate variability (HRV) at rest is commonly used as a non-invasive measure of autonomic regulation of heart rate. Alternatively, pulse rate variability (PRV) has been proposed as a surrogate of HRV. VoluMetrix has developed a novel technology that captures venous waveforms via sensors on the volar aspect of the wrist, called NIVAband. This study aims to assess the effect of yoga in the autonomic nervous system by analyzing the PRV obtained from the NIVA signal. Temporal (statistics of the normal-to-normal intervals), spectral (power in low and high frequency bands) and nonlinear (lagged Poincaré Plot analysis) parameters are analyzed before and after a yoga session in 20 healthy volunteers. The PRV analysis shows an increase in parameters related to parasympathetic activity and overall variability, and a decrease in parameters related to sympathetic activity and mean heart rate. These results support the beneficial effect of yoga in autonomic nervous system, increasing the parasympathetic activity.
The scale and severity of soil erosion within the headwaters of the Yangtze River in Yunnan Province are discussed. The Yangtze River rises in the western uplands of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and ...traverses 6380 km through southern and central China. The headwaters are in tectonically active and geologically unstable uplands. The basin is also generally under intensive agricultural use, mainly for rice cultivation. Hence, erosion rates are high and of increasing concern, especially considering the construction of the Three Gorges (Sanxia) Dam in the middle section. Sedimentation within the proposed reservoir could impair its efficiency and therefore soil conservation must be an integral component of basin management. Soil conservation efforts in Yunnan are reviewed and the local-scale planned approach to soil conservation is illustrated, using Dongchuan and Xundian as case studies. An ongoing runoff plot study at Yunnan Agricultural University (Kunming) is used to evaluate the effectiveness of various soil conservation measures. Maize (Zea mays) cropping treatments, typically employed in local agronomic practices, are applied to 30 erosion plots at 3 different slope angles, cultivated both parallel and perpendicular to the contour, thus, simulating a range of agricultural conditions on arable slopes. Plot data from 1993-1996 suggest several suitable soil conservation measures. Erosion rates were generally lower on plots where contour cultivation was used. The mean contour cultivation erosion rate was 0.69 of the mean downslope orientated cultivation rate. Straw mulch and contour cultivation seem particularly suitable soil conservation measures.

Erythropoietin is produced primarily by the kidney under control of a tissue oxygenation sensor. The recently developed erythropoietin radioimmunoassay should provide a clinically useful tool. Erythrocytosis is a pathologic state characterized by an elevated erythrocyte mass, which may result from increased proliferation of erythroid progenitors due to an intrinsic cellular defect or in response to extrinsic signals. Secondary erythrocytosis results from either physiologically appropriate compensation for inadequate tissue oxygenation or from inappropriate stimulation of erythropoiesis. Erythrocytosis increases oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, but at high hematocrit levels increased blood viscosity may result in decreased tissue oxygen delivery. Polycythemia vera is a hematopoietic stem cell disease of clonal origin. Initial results from the Polycythemia Rubra Study Group suggest that therapy with chlorambucil is associated with an unacceptably high risk for development of acute leukemia, and 32P is preferred for situations in which phlebotomy alone is insufficient.
The secretion of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was studied in an isolated perfused bovine adrenal gland preparation and in cultured bovine adrenal medullary chromaffin cells. Electrical field ...stimulation (10 Hz) of splanchnic nerve terminals in the isolated perfused gland resulted in a two-fold increase in AChE secretion from the gland. Perfusion with the cholinergic receptor antagonists mecamylamine (5 microM) and atropine (1 microM) inhibited 70% of the stimulated secretion of AChE, demonstrating that most of the stimulated secretion was derived from chromaffin cells. The effect of nicotine stimulation on the secretion of AChE from isolated bovine chromaffin cells was compared with that produced by other compounds (histamine, angiotensin II) which are known to stimulate secretion of catecholamines. Incubation with nicotine (1-25 microM) stimulated the secretion of catecholamines and AChE. Histamine (1 nM-10 microM) and angiotensin II (10 pM-10 microM) did not stimulate AChE secretion. Time-course studies of AChE resynthesis after irreversible inhibition with the esterase inhibitor diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) demonstrated that AChE is stored within chromaffin cells for at least 11 h before being secreted. AChE secretion was inhibited within 2-3 h by 10 micrograms/ml brefeldin A (BFA), a compound known to block protein translocation from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus (GA). The results suggest that AChE may reside for 8-9 h within the lumen of the ER before being actively secreted by processing through the GA.
