This book offers a wide-ranging account of the emerging issues of international politics in the Artic, and the emerging Geopolitical debates that surround the region.
In this thorough but accessible ...book covering environmental issues, the author examines the Geopolitics of emerging land and resource disputes and the rise of both nationalist and pan-Arctic movements in the region. Whereas existing literature on the politics of the Arctic tends to focus either on the environment or on Geopolitical interests, this book considers both of these themes in addition to the politics of the region's indigenous peoples and provides an overview on the emerging issues of international politics in the Arctic. The book makes full use of pedagogic features such as maps, diagrams, timelines, biographies and boxes highlighting key concepts and issues in order to make this an accessible book for both students and scholars alike.
This book will be of interest to students and scholars of International Relations, Arctic Politics, Environmental Politics and European Politics.
The air medical transport industry places a high value on developing and maintaining a culture of safety due to the higher risk nature of its operations. The dynamic nature of response and transport, ...inherent risks involved with flight, lack of supporting resources, weather conditions, and austere nature of the transport environment are all factors that highlight the need for enhanced safety. As such, the air medical transport industry has developed a robust and unique approach to provider and patient safety involving many tactics not otherwise used in other areas of health care. This article describes some of the unique safety features and approaches that are commonplace in the air medical transport industry and proposes a means for these initiatives to other areas of the health care system.
Environmental security is generally held to be a contemporary or even futuristic concern. However, as with many facets of security thought, this overlooks how the unparalleled technological, economic ...and social changes of the 19
th
Century forged much of the international political landscape we now inhabit. The tendency for ecological political enquiry to focus on the rise of ecocentric policy serves to obscure how many aspects of national and human security relating to environmental change were apparent in the 19
th
century. Human insecurity in the face of pollution and resource depletion was a part of the emergence of ecological science in response to the industrialisation of Europe and North America. In addition, this was the era when European imperialism reached its apex and European nationalisms fully emerged; both of which contributed to the national securitization of the environment around much of the world in contrasting ways as the desire to both conquer and preserve nature became more evident. Environmental questions of national, human and ecological security are not peculiar to the present age and were very much apparent in 19
th
Century global politics.
In September 1944 the Western Allies mounted an audacious attempt to seize a crossing over the Rhine into Germany in a bid to end the Second World War quickly. Yet despite the deployment of thousands ...of American, British and Polish airborne troops, in conjunction with the efforts of ground forces, the plan failed spectacularly and the war continued well into 1945. 'Operation Market Garden' is the result of a major international conference and highlights many new areas of interest and forces us to rethink our understanding of this pivotal period of the Second World War.
Aim: To report the reliability, accuracy and compliance of a brief fall risk screening tool in subacute and residential aged care.
Method: A 9‐item tool, developed by expert and literature review, ...was administered to 291 persons admitted to subacute and residential aged care at Peninsula Health (PH) Victoria, Australia. Items were analysed for their ability to predict falls and the four strongest incorporated into a screening tool. Reliability was assessed on six nurses.
Results: Most predictive items were recent falls (0.82), psychological status (0.55), medications (0.46) and cognition (0.41) χ2 (4, n= 291) = 89.89, P < 0.0001. The final 4‐item tool (PH‐FRAT) provides 80% accuracy (sensitivityER 70.2%, specificityER 68.8%) and high reliability (ICC = 0.79). The PH‐FRAT is now used in 50 local subacute and residential facilities.
Conclusion: The 4‐item PH‐FRAT is a popular, moderately predictive, reliable and brief method of screening fall risk in subacute and residential aged care.
