We report on measurements of the time-dependent CP violating observables in $B^0_s\rightarrow D^{\mp}_s K^{\pm}$ decays using a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions recorded with ...the LHCb detector. We find the CP violating observables $C_f=0.53\pm0.25\pm0.04$, $A^{\Delta\Gamma}_f=0.37\pm0.42\pm0.20$, $A^{\Delta\Gamma}_{\bar{f}}=0.20\pm0.41\pm0.20$, $S_f=-1.09\pm0.33\pm0.08$, $S_{\bar{f}}=-0.36\pm0.34\pm0.08$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. We use these observables to make the first measurement of the CKM angle $\gamma$ in $B^0_s\rightarrow D^{\mp}_s K^{\pm}$ decays, finding $\gamma$ = (115$_{-43}^{+28}$)$^\circ$ modulo 180$^\circ$ at 68% CL, where the error contains both statistical and systematic uncertainties.
A study of the angular distributions of leptons from decays of
J

ψ
’s produced in p-C and p-W collisions at
has been performed in the

ψ
Feynman-
x
region −0.34<
x

<0.14 and for

ψ
...transverse momenta up to 5.4 GeV/
c
. The data were collected by the HERA-B experiment at the HERA proton ring of the DESY laboratory. The results, based on a clean selection of 2.3×10
5
J
/
ψ
’s reconstructed in both the
e
+
e
−
and
μ
+
μ
−
decay channels, indicate that
J
/
ψ
’s are produced polarized. The magnitude of the effect is maximal at low
p
T
. For
p
T
>1 GeV/
c
a significant dependence on the reference frame is found: the polar anisotropy is more pronounced in the Collins-Soper frame and almost vanishes in the helicity frame, where, instead, a significant azimuthal anisotropy arises.
A study of $\chi_{b}$ meson production at LHCb is performed on proton-proton collision data, corresponding to 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7$ ...and 8TeV. The fraction of $\Upsilon(nS)$ mesons originating from $\chi_{b}$ decays is measured as a function of the $\Upsilon$ transverse momentum in the rapidity range $2.0 < y^{\Upsilon} < 4.5$. The radiative transition of the $\chi_{b}(3P)$ meson to $\Upsilon(3S)$ is observed for the first time. The $\chi_{b1}(3P)$ mass is determined to be $$m(\chi_{b1}(3P)) = 10\,511.3 \pm 1.7 \pm 2.5 MeV/c^2,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.
The LHCb Outer Tracker is a gaseous detector covering an area of \(5\times 6 m^2\) with 12 double layers of straw tubes. The performance of the detector is presented based on data of the LHC Run 2 ...running period from 2015 and 2016. Occupancies and operational experience for data collected in \(p p\), pPb and PbPb collisions are described. An updated study of the ageing effects is presented showing no signs of gain deterioration or other radiation damage effects. In addition several improvements with respect to LHC Run 1 data taking are introduced. A novel real-time calibration of the time-alignment of the detector and the alignment of the single monolayers composing detector modules are presented, improving the drift-time and position resolution of the detector by 20\%. Finally, a potential use of the improved resolution for the timing of charged tracks is described, showing the possibility to identify low-momentum hadrons with their time-of-flight.
Measurements of the branching fractions of $B^0_{(s)} \to K^{*\pm}K^\mp$ and $B^0_{(s)} \to K^{*\pm}\pi^\mp$ decays are performed using a data sample corresponding to $1.0 \ {\rm fb}^{-1}$ of ...proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $7\mathrm{\,TeV}$, where the $K^{*\pm}$ mesons are reconstructed in the $K^0_{\rm S}\pi^\pm$ final state. The first observation of the $B^0_s \to K^{*\pm}K^\mp$ decay and the first evidence for the $B^0_s \to K^{*-}\pi^+$ decay are reported with branching fractions \begin{eqnarray} {\cal B}\left(B^0_s \to K^{*\pm}K^\mp\right) & = & \left( 12.7\pm1.9\pm1.9 \right) \times 10^{-6} \, , \\ {\cal B}\left(B^0_s \to K^{*-}\pi^+\right) & = & ~\left( 3.3\pm1.1\pm0.5 \right) \times 10^{-6} \, , \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. In addition, an upper limit of ${\cal B}\left(B^0 \to K^{*\pm}K^\mp\right) < 0.4 \ (0.5) \times 10^{-6}$ is set at $90\,\% \ (95\,\%)$ confidence level.
Particle identification in intermediate heavy-ion collisions, using a modern 4π detector which contains several active layers, relies on a parametrisation or numerical integration of the energy loss ...in thick layers of detector material for different ions. A MeV and for ions up to at least
Z=8 is presented. Also, the consequences for time-of-flight measurements (TOF) in detectors behind several thick layers of detector material are discussed. The solution is applied to the data of the Huygens detector, which uses a TPC (d
E/d
x) and plastic scintillators for particle identification (
E and TOF or d
E/d
x and TOF).
The LHCb Outer Tracker is a gaseous detector covering an area of 5x6 m2 with 12 double layers of straw tubes. The detector with its services are described together with the commissioning and ...calibration procedures. Based on data of the first LHC running period from 2010 to 2012, the performance of the readout electronics and the single hit resolution and efficiency are presented. The efficiency to detect a hit in the central half of the straw is estimated to be 99.2%, and the position resolution is determined to be approximately 200 um. The Outer Tracker received a dose in the hottest region corresponding to 0.12 C/cm, and no signs of gain deterioration or other ageing effects are observed.
Inclusive doubly differential cross sections d super(2) s sub(pA )/dx sub(F ) dp sub(T ) super(2) as a function of Feynman-x (x sub(F )) and transverse momentum (p sub(T )) for the production of K ...sub(S ) super(0) , and $\bar{\varLambda}$ in proton-nucleus interactions at 920 GeV are presented. The measurements were performed by HERA-B in the negative x sub(F )range (-0.12<x sub(F )<0.0) and for transverse momenta up to p sub(T )=1.6 GeV/c. Results for three target materials: carbon, titanium and tungsten are given. The ratios of production cross sections are presented and discussed. The Cronin effect is clearly observed for all three V super(0) species. The atomic number dependence is parameterized as s sub(pA )=s sub(pN ); A super(a )where s sub(pN )is the proton-nucleon cross section. The measured values of a are all near one. The results are compared with EPOS 1.67 and PYTHIA 6.3. EPOS reproduces the data to within -20% except at very low transverse momentum.
