The significance of social situations is commonly context-embedded. Although the role of context has been extensively studied in basic sensory processing or simple stimulus-response settings, its ...relevance for social cognition is unknown. We propose the social context network model (SCNM), a fronto-insular-temporal network responsible for processing social contextual effects. The SCNM may 1) update the context and use it to make predictions, 2) coordinate internal and external milieus, and 3) consolidate context-target associative learning. We suggest the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) as a specific disorder in which the reported deficits in social cognition (e.g., facial recognition, empathy, decision-making, figurative language, theory of mind) can be described as context impairments due to deficits in the SCNM. Disruption of orbitofrontal-amygdala circuit, as well as the frontal, temporal, and insular atrophy in bVFTD, suggests a relationship between context-sensitive social cognition and SCNM. In considering context as an intrinsic part of social cognition, we highlight the need for a situated cognition approach in social cognition research as opposed to an abstract, universal, and decontextualized approach. The assessment of context-dependent social cognition paradigms, the SCNM, and their possible application to neuropsychiatric disorders may provide new insight into bvFTD and other related frontal disorders.

Theoretical approaches propose a blending between interoception and time estimation. Interoception might constitute a neurophysiological mechanism for encoding duration. However, no study has assessed the convergence between interoception and time estimation using behavioral, neurophysiological, and functional anatomy signatures. We examined the multimodal convergence between interoception and time estimation using a two-fold approach. In study 1, we developed a dual design combining interoception (measuring heartbeat detection - HBD, and heartbeat evoked potential - HEP) with a time estimation paradigm (TEP, estimation of duration of a 120 s interval). In study 2, we performed a conjoint metanalysis (Multi-level Kernel Density Analysis, MKDA) of neuroimaging, including reports of interoception and time estimation. Both studies provide convergent evidence of time estimation's significant involvement in behavioral, electrophysiological (enhanced HEP), and neuroimaging (overlapping cluster in the right insula and operculum) signatures of interoception. Convergent results from both studies offer direct support for a shared mechanism of interoception and time estimation.

Multiple disturbances following lesions of the insula are reviewed in the present article, including those related to autonomic function; gustatory, olfactory, auditory, somatosensory, and multimodal ...perception, as well as body awareness; the emotion of disgust; mood and willed action, addiction behavior, and language. Given the multiple and varied nature of the impairments revealed by lesion studies, we suggest that the insula, as a multimodal area, has a major role as a convergence zone implicated in the coordination between internal and external information through emotional subjective awareness. Methodological issues are discussed with attention paid to lesion etiology, and lesions involving adjacent areas to the insular cortex.
Manual actions are a hallmark of humanness. Their underlying neural circuitry gives rise to species-specific skills and interacts with language processes. In particular, multiple studies show that ...hand-related expressions - verbal units evoking manual activity - variously affect concurrent manual actions, yielding apparently controversial results (interference, facilitation, or null effects) in varied time windows. Through a systematic review of 108 experiments, we show that such effects are driven by several factors, such as the level of verbal processing, action complexity, and the time-lag between linguistic and motor processes. We reconcile key empirical patterns by introducing the Hand-Action-Network Dynamic Language Embodiment (HANDLE) model, an integrative framework based on neural coupling dynamics and predictive-coding principles. To conclude, we assess HANDLE against the backdrop of other action-cognition theories, illustrate its potential applications to understand high-level deficits in motor disorders, and discuss key challenges for further development. In sum, our work aligns with the 'pragmatic turn', moving away from passive and static representationalist perspectives to a more dynamic, enactive, and embodied conceptualization of cognitive processes.
Few studies consider how context influences emotion recognition. Abstract
The importance of assessing social cognition to characterize dementia syndromes is increasingly recognized, with lower social cognition capacity associated with reduced functional independence and greater carer burden. Emotion recognition is impaired in both behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia, yet the social and behavioural changes observed in these syndromes in everyday situations varies. To date, most studies have investigated isolated, context-free stimuli indexing recognition of facial emotions only. Here, we aimed to investigate how contextual information (i.e. emotional body language) influences emotion recognition, within the framework of the Social Context Network Model. Thirty-one patients with frontotemporal dementia (19 behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia; 12 semantic dementia) and 20 healthy age- and education-matched controls were assessed on three tasks which varied contextual cues: (i) face alone; (ii) context alone; and (iii) face embedded in context. Voxel-based morphometry was used to identify neural correlates of task performance. Our results demonstrated that both behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia patients performed worse than controls in recognizing emotions from face alone and context alone. Importantly, performance differed when faces were presented in context. While both behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia and semantic dementia patients performed similarly to controls on congruent items (i.e. face emotion and body emotion are the same) (P-values > 0.05), patients with behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia performed worse than both controls (P < 0.001) and patients with semantic dementia (P = 0.044) for incongruent items (i.e. face emotion and body emotion are different). Neuroimaging analyses revealed that abnormal contextual influence was associated with lower integrity of the right parahippocampal gyrus/amygdala and left precentral gyrus. Together, these results indicate that patients with behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia are over-reliant on external contextual information. Conversely, in semantic dementia and controls, contextual influence varies, with the degree of contextual influence appearing to be mediated, at least in part, by the facial expression depicted. The profile in behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia is reminiscent of the 'environmental dependency syndrome' described in frontal lesion patients. It also converges with recent evidence of abnormal face perception in this group. From a theoretical perspective, our findings demonstrate that the capacity to incorporate contextual body language is dependent on the integrity of both contextual association brain regions (i.e. parahippocampal gyrus), as well as regions necessary for processing dynamic body movements. Clinically, these results open new avenues for rehabilitation of social impairments in dementia.
