Discovering technology opportunities from the opinion of users can promote successful technological development by satisfying the needs of users. However, although previous approaches using opinion ...mining only have classified various needs of users into positive or negative categories, they cannot derive the main reasons for their opinion. To solve this problem, this research proposes an approach to exploring technology opportunity by structuring user needs with a concept of opinion trigger of objects and functions of the technology-based products. To discover technology opportunity, first, an opinion trigger is identified from review data using Naïve Base classifier and natural language processing. Second, the opinion triggers and patent keywords that have a similar meaning in context are clustered to discover the needs of the user and need-related technology. Then, the sentimental values of needs are calculated through graph-based semi-supervised learning. Finally, the needs of the user are classified in resolving the problem of vacant technology to discover technology opportunity. Then, an R&D strategy of each opportunity is suggested based on opinion triggers, patent keywords, and their property. Based on the concept of opinion trigger-based methodology, a case study is conducted on automobile-related reviews, extracting the customer needs and presenting important R&D projects such as an extracted need (cargo transportation) and its R&D strategy (resolving contradiction). The proposed approach can analyze the needs of user at a functional level to discover new technology opportunities.
Firms today face rapidly changing and complex environments that managers and leaders must navigate carefully because confronting these changes is directly connected with success and failure in ...business. In particular, business leaders are adopting a new paradigm of planning, dynamic adaptive plans, which react adaptively to uncertainties by adjusting plans according to rapid changes in circumstances. However, these dynamic plans have been applied in larger-scale industries such as wastewater management in longer-range time frames. This paper follows the dynamic adaptive plan paradigm but transfers it to the technology management context with shorter-range action plans. Based on this new paradigm of risk management and technology planning, we propose a risk-adaptive technology roadmap (TRM) that can adapt to changing complex environments. First we identify risk by topic modeling based on futuristic data and then by sentiment analysis. Second, for the derived risks, we determine new and alternative plans by co-occurrence of risk-related keywords. Third, we convert an existing TRM to network topology with adaptive plans and construct a conditional probability table for the network. Finally, we estimate posterior probability and infer it by Bayesian network by adjusting plans depending on occurrence of risk events. Based on this posterior probability, we remap the paths in the previous TRM to new maps, and we apply our proposed approach to the field of artificial intelligence to validate its feasibility. Our research contributes to the possibility of using dynamic adaptive planning with technology as well as to increase the sustainability of technology roadmapping.
How do managers react in an environment where bribery is likely to bring high rewards, but also presents high risks? We examine the supply side (firms' illicit payments) of bribery in a global ...setting, using the United Nations' (UN) Oil-for-Food Program, part of UN sanctions on Iraq. Some companies helped Iraq circumvent UN sanctions through bribe payments in the form of illicit surcharges. Our transaction-level analysis of factors affecting bribe payments draws on the economic theory of crime, agency theory, and home country institutions. Results suggest that firms pay larger bribes when there are stronger financial and managerial incentives, but pay less when their home countries have implemented the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention. We find little relationship between a widely used country-level corruption perception index and firms' actual bribery.
Individual Streptomyces species have the genetic potential to produce a diverse array of natural products of commercial, medical and veterinary interest. However, these products are often not ...detectable under laboratory culture conditions. To harness their full biosynthetic potential, it is important to develop a detailed understanding of the regulatory networks that orchestrate their metabolism. Here we integrate nucleotide resolution genome-scale measurements of the transcriptome and translatome of Streptomyces coelicolor, the model antibiotic-producing actinomycete. Our systematic study determines 3,570 transcription start sites and identifies 230 small RNAs and a considerable proportion (∼21%) of leaderless mRNAs; this enables deduction of genome-wide promoter architecture. Ribosome profiling reveals that the translation efficiency of secondary metabolic genes is negatively correlated with transcription and that several key antibiotic regulatory genes are translationally induced at transition growth phase. These findings might facilitate the design of new approaches to antibiotic discovery and development.
Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide health issue especially in women. Serum vitamin D concentrations vary depending on the weather. However, the ideal vitamin D supplementation strategy related to ...weather remains uncertain. We aimed to investigate the relationship between climate factors and serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D 25(OH)D concentrations. This study included 11,272 women aged 20-79 who visited a health promotion center for annual checkups between January 2013 and December 2015. We reviewed medical records and collected daily meteorological data. We analyzed the association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and climate factors using simple and multiple regression models and then predicted serum 25(OH)D concentration using multiple fractional polynomial models. The median age of the participants was 51 years (20-79 years), and the mean serum 25(OH)D level was 17.4 ± 8.6 ng/mL. The serum 25(OH)D concentration was lower in young women than in older women. The proportions of women with adequate 25(OH)D levels were 14.9% and 47.0% in the age groups 20-29 and 70-79, respectively. The maximum level of predicted log 25(OH)D was found in September, and the minimum was found in January. In multiple regression analysis, age and monthly mean temperature were associated with 25(OH)D concentrations. Serum 25(OH)D level was predicted using the following formula: log (25(OH)D) = 2.144 + 0.009 × age + 0.018 × ((temperature + 12.4)/10)2 (P < 0.001, adjusted R2 = 0.091). Serum 25(OH)D concentrations changed according to air temperature. An adequate strategy for vitamin D supplementation, based on air temperature, is necessary to maintain healthy serum 25(OH)D levels.
Adipose tissue (AT) adapts to overnutrition in a complex process, wherein specialized immune cells remove and replace dysfunctional and stressed adipocytes with new fat cells. Among immune cells ...recruited to AT, lipid-associated macrophages (LAMs) have emerged as key players in obesity and in diseases involving lipid stress and inflammation. Here, we show that LAMs selectively express transmembrane 4 L six family member 19 (TM4SF19), a lysosomal protein that represses acidification through its interaction with Vacuolar-ATPase. Inactivation of TM4SF19 elevates lysosomal acidification and accelerates the clearance of dying/dead adipocytes in vitro and in vivo. TM4SF19 deletion reduces the LAM accumulation and increases the proportion of restorative macrophages in AT of male mice fed a high-fat diet. Importantly, male mice lacking TM4SF19 adapt to high-fat feeding through adipocyte hyperplasia, rather than hypertrophy. This adaptation significantly improves local and systemic insulin sensitivity, and energy expenditure, offering a potential avenue to combat obesity-related metabolic dysfunction.
Abstract
Determining transcriptional and translational regulatory elements in GC-rich Streptomyces genomes is essential to elucidating the complex regulatory networks that govern secondary metabolite ...biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) expression. However, information about such regulatory elements has been limited for Streptomyces genomes. To address this limitation, a high-quality genome sequence of β-lactam antibiotic-producing Streptomyces clavuligerus ATCC 27 064 is completed, which contains 7163 newly annotated genes. This provides a fundamental reference genome sequence to integrate multiple genome-scale data types, including dRNA-Seq, RNA-Seq and ribosome profiling. Data integration results in the precise determination of 2659 transcription start sites which reveal transcriptional and translational regulatory elements, including −10 and −35 promoter components specific to sigma (σ) factors, and 5′-untranslated region as a determinant for translation efficiency regulation. Particularly, sequence analysis of a wide diversity of the −35 components enables us to predict potential σ-factor regulons, along with various spacer lengths between the −10 and −35 elements. At last, the primary transcriptome landscape of the β-lactam biosynthetic pathway is analyzed, suggesting temporal changes in metabolism for the synthesis of secondary metabolites driven by transcriptional regulation. This comprehensive genetic information provides a versatile genetic resource for rational engineering of secondary metabolite BGCs in Streptomyces.
This study was aimed to test the mediation effect of self-care on the associations of social support and heart failure (HF) knowledge with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). We analyzed baseline ...data from patients with HF (n = 122) enrolled in a randomized controlled trial. Mediation analysis was conducted using Hayes’ PROCESS macro for SPSS with Model 4, based on the bias-corrected bootstrap method. Higher levels of social support and HF knowledge were associated with better self-care. Better self-care was associated with better HRQOL. While social support and HF knowledge had no significant direct effects on HRQOL, they indirectly affected HRQOL through self-care. Our findings suggest that social support and HF knowledge affect HRQOL indirectly through self-care. To improve the HRQOL in patients with HF, it is necessary to motivate them to perform regular self-care by enhancing their HF knowledge and providing social support.

Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are abundant phytoplankton groups in marine environments, which contribute approximately 20% of global carbon fixation through photosynthesis. Moreover, diatoms exhibit the ...highest species diversity (approximately 18,000 diatom species) among marine photosynthetic eukaryotes, which were identified by morphological characteristics. Molecular phylogenetic analyses could shed new insights into the evolutionary relationships of diverse diatom species. Nevertheless, a comprehensive understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of diatom species still remains unclear because the available molecular data are insufficient compared with their high species diversity. Furthermore, several novel diatom species were reported from field samples with no molecular evidence. In particular, the phylogenies of diatom species constructed using organelle genomes revealed that several diatom genera are paraphyletic with high supporting values. We constructed high-resolution phylogenetic trees of diatom species using organelle genomes (plastids and mitochondria) and compared the morphologies in several paraphyletic diatom genera. Our study demonstrated that some morphological characteristics (e.g., genus characters) of several diatom genera could not represent current genus boundaries. Based on the results, we highlight the necessity for taxonomic reinvestigation. To reestablish this in diatoms, it will be essential to incorporate more genome data from a broader range of taxon samples, along with a comparison of morphological characteristics.
Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the association between periodontitis in the upper jaw and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) using the nationwide Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey ...(KNHANES) data. In this cross-sectional study, data of KNHANES participants enrolled between 2008 and 2012 were reviewed. Periodontitis of the upper teeth was diagnosed by dentists according to the community periodontal index with standardized methods. CRS was diagnosed by otorhinolaryngologists according to the European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps 2020 with nasal endoscopy findings. We also evaluated the association between periodontitis and CRS according to smoking and drinking status. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed. Overall, 28,761 participants were eligible for analysis, and 210 were diagnosed with CRS. Periodontitis was associated with CRS diagnosis (odds ratio OR = 1.391, 95% confidence interval CI = 1.013–1.912). Non-drinkers showed no significant association between periodontitis and CRS (OR = 1.142, 95% CI 0.746–1.749). However, among drinkers, periodontitis was significantly associated with CRS (OR = 1.733, 95% CI 1.091–2.753). The number of smokers with CRS was not statistically sufficient and a logistic regression model based on smoking status could not be generated. Individuals with periodontitis in the upper jaw may need to consult an otorhinolaryngologist for comorbid CRS especially according to drinking status.
