The purpose of the study was to find differences in the parameters of the response to the blink reflex (BR) between patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and health volunteers. A ...prospective cohort study was conducted over 2 years. The TN-subgroup included 15 patients (mean age / SD 62.3 ± 10.7 years). Pain-free and healthy volunteers as a HV-subgroup (mean age / SD: 30.8 ± 8.1 years) were recruited from asymptomatic students of dental medicine. Diagnostic parameters were determined by measuring latency to the onset of the BR components from electric stimulation. The following branches of the trigeminal nerve were affected: maxillary branch only (26.7%), mandibular branch only (20%), combined: ophthalmic branch with maxillary branch (6.7%), and ophthalmic branch with mandibular branch (6.7%) respectively, combined maxillary and mandibular branch (26.7%) and affected all three branches (13.4%). The latencies of the BR, left and right side together, between subgroups were significantly higher for values R1 (homolateral early response), R2 (homolateral late response), R2c latency (contralaterally expressed response) in the TN-subgroup (p < 0.05). On the basis of the presence of R1c and R3 latencies and upon considering the abnormal findings of the BR, no statistically significant differences were found between the examined subgroups (p > 0.05). Blink-reflex parameters (R1, R2 and R2c) were significantly abnormal comparing TN-patients with healthy volunteers. The R3 component of the BR was related to noxious stimuli, likewise by innocuous stimuli.
Background/Aim. Oral health is an integral part of general health and an important factor in the overall quality of life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dental caries ...among the children from the SOS Children?s Village in Croatia. Methods. The dental examinations based on the World Health Organization criteria were performed on 88 children from SOS Children?s Village in Croatia. The teeth were clinically examined with standard dental instruments using the visual-tactile method under standard light. The clinical indexes of decayed, missed, and filled (dmft and DMFT, for primary and permantnt teeth, respectively) and decayed, missed, and filled surfaces (DMFS), as well as the significant caries index (SiC) were recorded. Results. Among the children from the SOS Children?s Village caries incidence were 57.94%. The mean dmft, DMFT and DMFS of all children was 1.82, 1.90 and 2.82, respectively. The highest mean dmft and DMFT score of 4.24 and 2.56 was found among 7?10 and 11?14 years old children, respectively. The highest mean DMFS score of 3.85 and 3.90 was found among 11?14 years old children and among the children from the SOS Children?s Village Lekenik, respectively. Among all children, the SiC index was 4.69. There was a significant difference between age groups and children?s place of residence in DMFT, DMFS and SiC. Conclusion. Prevalence of dental caries is low among the children from the SOS Children?s Village in Croatia compared to the children who lived with biological families.

Prospektivna kohortna studija provedena je tijekom 2 godine. Podskupina NT ukljucivala je IS pacijenata (srednja dob / SD 62,3+ or -10,7 godina). Bezbolni i zdravi dobrovoljci kao podskupina HV (srednja dob / SD: 30, 8+ or -8,1 godina) regrutirani su od asimptomatskih studenata stomatologije. Dijagnosticki parametri odredeni su mjerenjem latencije do pocetka refleksnih komponenti od elektricne stimulacije. Zahvacene su sljedece grane trigeminalnog zivca: samo maksilarna grana (26,7%), samo mandibularna grana (20%), kombinirano: oftalmicka grana s maksilarnom granom (6,7%), odnosno oftalmicka grana s mandibularnom granom (6,7%), kombinirana maksilarna i mandibularna grana (26,7%) i zahvacene sve tri grane zivca (13,4%). Latencije BR-a zajedno lijeve i desne strane izmedu podskupina bile su znacajno vece za vrijednosti Rl (homolateralni rani odgovor), R2 (homolateralni kasni odgovor), R2c latencije (kontralateralno izrazen odgovor) u NT-podskupini (p<0,05). S obzirom na prisutnost Rlc i R3 latencije, sto se smatra abnormalnim nalazom BR-a, nije pronadena statisticki znacajna razlika izmedu ispitivanih podskupina (p>0,05). Parametri BR-a (Rl, R2 i R2c) bili su znacajno abnormalni pri usporedbi NT-pacijenata sa zdravim dobrovoljcima. It should be stressed that all the credits to society's longevity and international success should be given to specific individuals who were part of the School of Dental Medicine academic staff. It all started in 1948 when the first academic courses were introduced to Odontology Department of the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb and continued vigorously after the School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb was founded in 1962. Aim Oral health of Croatian Army recruits has been researched. In2001, 505 19-year-old recruits in the barracks in Koprivnica wereclinically examined and asked about their health care habits.Methods ...The oral status of all teeth (except wisdom teeth) wasdescribed by the DMFT index (decayed, missing, and filled teeth)and compared with the FST index (filled and sound teeth). Thelevel of the recruits’ restored teeth was calculated by the formulaFTx100/DFT.Results The research showed the average DMFT index value of7.32. The average value of the FST index was 23.56, and 47.8%of the teeth were restored. A statistically significant difference accordingto domicile was determined in the DT, MT, FT and FSTindex. The subjects from rural environments had more teeth affectedby caries, and those from urban environments had more restoredteeth (66.59%). The health condition of the subjects fromurban environments is better (higher values of the FT index andslower cumulative distribution and statistical significance of theFST index).Conclusion The FST index is more adequate than the DMFT indexfor application in populations with a higher level of teeth affectedby caries. The research conducted contributes to the determinationof dental health of the Croatian Army recruits as well as to theorganisation of optimal preventive programs.
