Chinese traditional liquor, a major type of global distilled spirits, offers a unique flavor system acquired across thousands of years of development. Owing to the various raw brewing materials, ...types of koji, fermentation vessels, and processes used during liquor production, significant differences can occur in the content of flavor chemical components, such as esters, alcohols, aromatics, ketones, nitrogen compounds, acids, and aldehydes in the resulting liquor. Therefore, the liquor can be characterized on the basis of four basic flavors: sauce‐, strong‐, light‐, and rice‐aroma, and eight derivative flavors: feng‐, sesame‐, chi‐, te‐, mixed‐, laobaigan‐, herbal‐, and fuyu‐aroma. In this review, we describe the production and development process of Chinese traditional liquor in detail; summarize the flavor types, flavor chemical composition characteristics, and research progress related to this liquor; and discuss the influence of trace chemical components on liquor flavor, with the aim of laying a theoretical foundation for stabilizing the quality and increasing the yield of traditional liquor.
Previous methods of designing a bolt supporting network, which depend on engineering experiences, seek optimal bolt supporting schemes in terms of supporting quality. The supporting cost and time, ...however, have not been considered, which restricts their applications in real-world situations. We formulate the problem of designing a bolt supporting network as a three-objective optimization model by simultaneously considering such indicators as quality, economy, and efficiency. Especially, two surrogate models are constructed by support vector regression for roof-to-floor convergence and the two-sided displacement, respectively, so as to rapidly evaluate supporting quality during optimization. To solve the formulated model, a novel interactive preference-based multiobjective evolutionary algorithm is proposed. The highlight of generic methods which interactively articulate preferences is to systematically manage the regions of interest by three steps, that is, "partitioning-updating-tracking" in accordance with the cognition process of human. The preference regions of a decision-maker (DM) are first articulated and employed to narrow down the feasible objective space before the evolution in terms of nadir point, not the commonly used ideal point. Then, the DM's preferences are tracked by dynamically updating these preference regions based on satisfactory candidates during the evolution. Finally, individuals in the population are evaluated based on the preference regions. We apply the proposed model and algorithm to design the bolt supporting network of a practical roadway. The experimental results show that the proposed method can generate an optimal bolt supporting scheme with a good balance between supporting quality and the other demands, besides speeding up its convergence.
The rate and mechanism of protein sequence evolution have been central questions in evolutionary biology since the 1960s. Although the rate of protein sequence evolution depends primarily on the ...level of functional constraint, exactly what determines functional constraint has remained unclear. The increasing availability of genomic data has enabled much needed empirical examinations on the nature of functional constraint. These studies found that the evolutionary rate of a protein is predominantly influenced by its expression level rather than functional importance. A combination of theoretical and empirical analyses has identified multiple mechanisms behind these observations and demonstrated a prominent role in protein evolution of selection against errors in molecular and cellular processes.
Until now there has been no fundamental theory applicable for biodegradable metals (BMs). First, this paper optimizes the definition of BMs given in 2014. Second, the dual criteria of ...biodegradability and biocompatibility are proposed for BMs, and all metallic elements in the periodic table with accessible data are screened on the basis of these criteria. Regarding biodegradability, electrode potential, reactivity series, galvanic series, Pilling–Bedworth ratio, and Pourbaix diagrams are all adopted as parameters to classify the degradable and nondegradable nature of a material, especially in a physiological environment. Considering the biocompatibility at different levels, cellular biocompatibility, tissue biocompatibility, and human/clinical related biocompatibility parameters are put forward to comprehensively evaluate the biosafety of BMs. Third, for the material design of BMs, mechanical properties, chemical properties, physical properties and biological properties should be considered and balanced to guarantee that the degradation behavior of BMs match well with a tissue regeneration/repair procedure as the function of time and spatial location. Besides the selected metallic elements, some nonmetallic elements are selected as suitable alloying elements for BMs. Finally, five classification/research directions for future BMs are proposed: biodegradable pure metals, crystalline alloys, bulk metallic glasses, high entropy alloys, and metal matrix composites.
The fundamental theory of biodegradable metals are clarified in this review article, with the definition of biodegradable metals, biodegradability, and biocompatibility dual criteria for metallic elements in the periodic table being regarded as biodegradable metals. Key properties needed to be considered for materials design of biodegradable metals and future research and development directions for biodegradable metals are proposed.
Abstract
The virulence factor database (VFDB, http://www.mgc.ac.cn/VFs/) is dedicated to presenting a comprehensive knowledge base and a versatile analysis platform for bacterial virulence factors ...(VFs). Recent developments in sequencing technologies have led to increasing demands to analyze potential VFs within microbiome data that always consist of many different bacteria. Nevertheless, the current classification of VFs from various pathogens is based on different schemes, which create a chaotic situation and form a barrier for the easy application of the VFDB dataset for future panbacterial metagenomic analyses. Therefore, based on extensive literature mining, we recently proposed a general category of bacterial VFs in the database and reorganized the VFDB dataset accordingly. Thus, all known bacterial VFs from 32 genera of common bacterial pathogens collected in the VFDB are well grouped into 14 basal categories along with over 100 subcategories in a hierarchical architecture. The new coherent and well-defined VFDB dataset will be feasible and applicable for future panbacterial analysis in terms of virulence factors. In addition, we introduced a redesigned JavaScript-independent web interface for the VFDB website to make the database readily accessible to all users with various client settings worldwide.
Indigenous Tibetan people have lived on the Tibetan Plateau for millennia. There is a long-standing question about the genetic basis of high-altitude adaptation in Tibetans. We conduct a genome-wide ...study of 7.3 million genotyped and imputed SNPs of 3,008 Tibetans and 7,287 non-Tibetan individuals of Eastern Asian ancestry. Using this large dataset, we detect signals of high-altitude adaptation at nine genomic loci, of which seven are unique. The alleles under natural selection at two of these loci methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) and EPAS1 are strongly associated with blood-related phenotypes, such as hemoglobin, homocysteine, and folate in Tibetans. The folate-increasing allele of rs1801133 at the MTHFR locus has an increased frequency in Tibetans more than expected under a drift model, which is probably a consequence of adaptation to high UV radiation. These findings provide important insights into understanding the genomic consequences of high-altitude adaptation in Tibetans.

This paper ...presents a bibliometric overview of research published in operations research and management science in recent decades. The main objective of this study is to identify some of the most relevant research in this field and some of the newest trends according to the information found in the Web of Science database. Several classifications are made, including an analysis of the most influential journals, the two hundred most cited papers of all time and the most productive and influential authors. The results obtained are in accordance with the common wisdom, although some variations are found.

There is increasing evidence that bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP) are involved in the proliferation and drug tolerance of kidney cancer. However, the molecular mechanism of BMP8A in renal cell ...proliferation and drug tolerance is not clear. Here we showed that BMP8A was highly expressed in renal cell carcinoma, which suggests a poor prognosis of ccRCC. Promotion of cell proliferation and inhibition of apoptosis were detected by CCK‐8 assay, Trypan Blue staining, flow cytometry and bioluminescence. BMP8A promoted resistance of As2O3 by regulating Nrf2 and Wnt pathways in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, BMP8A enhanced phosphorylation of Nrf2, which, in turn, inhibited Keap1‐mediated Nrf2 ubiquitination and, ultimately, promoted nuclear translocation and transcriptional activity of Nrf2. Nrf2 regulates the transcription of TRIM24 detected by ChIP‐qPCR. BMP8A was highly expressed in ccRCC, which suggests a poor prognosis. BMP8A was expected to be an independent prognostic molecule for ccRCC. On the one hand, activated Nrf2 regulated reactive oxygen balance, and on the other hand, by regulating the transcription level of TRIM24, it was involved in the regulation of the Wnt pathway to promote the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of ccRCC and the resistance of As2O3. Taken together, our findings describe a regulatory axis where BMP8A promotes Nrf2 phosphorylation and activates TRIM24 to promote survival and drug resistance in ccRCC.
BMP8A can promote Nrf2 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation to exert antioxidative stress and transcriptional activity. At the same time, Nrf2 acts as a transcription factor of TRIM24, promotes the expression of TRIM24, activates the Wnt pathway and increases chemotherapy tolerance.
Retinal fundus diseases can lead to irreversible visual impairment without timely diagnoses and appropriate treatments. Single disease-based deep learning algorithms had been developed for the ...detection of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Here, we developed a deep learning platform (DLP) capable of detecting multiple common referable fundus diseases and conditions (39 classes) by using 249,620 fundus images marked with 275,543 labels from heterogenous sources. Our DLP achieved a frequency-weighted average F1 score of 0.923, sensitivity of 0.978, specificity of 0.996 and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.9984 for multi-label classification in the primary test dataset and reached the average level of retina specialists. External multihospital test, public data test and tele-reading application also showed high efficiency for multiple retinal diseases and conditions detection. These results indicate that our DLP can be applied for retinal fundus disease triage, especially in remote areas around the world.
