We present new measurements of the parallax of seven long-period (≥10 days) Milky Way (MW) Cepheid variables (SS CMa, XY Car, VY Car, VX Per, WZ Sgr, X Pup, and S Vul) using one-dimensional ...astrometric measurements from spatial scanning of Wide-Field Camera 3 on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The observations were obtained at ∼6 month intervals over 4 years. The distances are 1.7-3.6 kpc, with a mean precision of 45 as (signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) 10) and a best precision of 29 as (S/N = 14). The accuracy of the parallaxes is demonstrated through independent analyses of >100 reference stars. This raises to 10 the number of long-period Cepheids with significant parallax measurements, 8 obtained from this program. We also present high-precision mean F555W, F814W, and F160W magnitudes of these Cepheids, allowing a direct, zeropoint-independent comparison to >1800 extragalactic Cepheids in the hosts of 19 SNe Ia. This sample addresses two outstanding systematic uncertainties affecting prior comparisons of MW and extragalactic Cepheids used to calibrate the Hubble constant (H0): their dissimilarity of periods and photometric systems. Comparing the new parallaxes to their predicted values derived from reversing the distance ladder gives a ratio (or independent scale for H0) of 1.037 0.036, consistent with no change and inconsistent at the 3.5 level with a ratio of 0.91 needed to match the value predicted by Planck cosmic microwave background data in concert with ΛCDM. Using these data instead to augment the Riess et al. measurement of H0 improves the precision to 2.3%, yielding 73.48 1.66 km s−1 Mpc−1, and the tension with Planck + ΛCDM increases to 3.7 . The future combination of Gaia parallaxes and HST spatial scanning photometry of 50 MW Cepheids can support a <1% calibration of H0.
We use the Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to reduce the uncertainty in the local value of the Hubble constant from 3.3% to 2.4%. The bulk of this improvement comes ...from new near-infrared (NIR) observations of Cepheid variables in 11 host galaxies of recent type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), more than doubling the sample of reliable SNe Ia having a Cepheid-calibrated distance to a total of 19; these in turn leverage the magnitude-redshift relation based on ~300 SNe Ia at z< 0.15. All 19 hosts as well as the megamaser system NGC 4258 have been observed with WFC3 in the optical and NIR, thus nullifying cross-instrument zeropoint errors in the relative distance estimates from Cepheids. Other noteworthy improvements include a 33% reduction in the systematic uncertainty in the maser distance to NGC 4258, a larger sample of Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), a more robust distance to the LMC based on late-type detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs), HST observations of Cepheids in M31, and new HST-based trigonometric parallaxes for Milky Way (MW) Cepheids. We consider four geometric distance calibrations of Cepheids: (i) megamasers in NGC 4258, (ii) 8 DEBs in the LMC, (iii) 15 MW Cepheids with parallaxes measured with HST/FGS, HST/WFC3 spatial scanning and/or Hipparcos, and (iv) 2 DEBs in M31. The Hubble constant from each is 72.25 + or - 2.51, 72.04 + or - 2.67, 76.18 + or - 2.37, and 74.50 + or - 3.27 km s super(-1) Mpc super(-1), respectively. Our best estimate of H sub(0)= 73.24 + or - 1.74 km s super(-1) Mpc super(-1) combines the anchors NGC 4258, MW, and LMC, yielding a 2.4% determination (all quoted uncertainties include fully propagated statistical and systematic components). This value is 3.4sigma higher than 66.93 + or - 0.62 km s super(-1) Mpc super(-1) predicted by LambdaCDM with 3 neutrino flavors having a mass of 0.06 eV and the new Planck data, but the discrepancy reduces to 2.1sigma relative to the prediction of 69.3 + or - 0.7 km s super(-1) Mpc super(-1) based on the comparably precise combination of WMAP+ACT+SPT+BAO observations, suggesting that systematic uncertainties in CMB radiation measurements may play a role in the tension. If we take the conflict between Planck high-redshift measurements and our local determination of H sub(0) at face value, one plausible explanation could involve an additional source of dark radiation in the early universe in the range of DeltaN sub(eff)approximate 0.4-1. We anticipate further significant improvements in H sub(0) from upcoming parallax measurements of long-period MW Cepheids.
ABSTRACT
We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging of a pre-explosion counterpart to SN 2019yvr obtained 2.6 yr before its explosion as a type Ib supernova (SN Ib). Aligning to a post-explosion ...Gemini-S/GSAOI image, we demonstrate that there is a single source consistent with being the SN 2019yvr progenitor system, the second SN Ib progenitor candidate after iPTF13bvn. We also analysed pre-explosion Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) imaging, but we do not detect any counterparts at the SN location. SN 2019yvr was highly reddened, and comparing its spectra and photometry to those of other, less extinguished SNe Ib we derive $E(B-V)=0.51\substack{+0.27\\
-0.16}$ mag for SN 2019yvr. Correcting photometry of the pre-explosion source for dust reddening, we determine that this source is consistent with a log (L/L⊙) = 5.3 ± 0.2 and $T_{\mathrm{eff}} = 6800\substack{+400\\
-200}$ K star. This relatively cool photospheric temperature implies a radius of 320$\substack{+30\\
-50}~\mathrm{ R}_{\odot}$, much larger than expectations for SN Ib progenitor stars with trace amounts of hydrogen but in agreement with previously identified SN IIb progenitor systems. The photometry of the system is also consistent with binary star models that undergo common envelope evolution, leading to a primary star hydrogen envelope mass that is mostly depleted but still seemingly in conflict with the SN Ib classification of SN 2019yvr. SN 2019yvr had signatures of strong circumstellar interaction in late-time (>150 d) spectra and imaging, and so we consider eruptive mass-loss and common envelope evolution scenarios that explain the SN Ib spectroscopic class, pre-explosion counterpart, and dense circumstellar material. We also hypothesize that the apparent inflation could be caused by a quasi-photosphere formed in an extended, low-density envelope, or circumstellar matter around the primary star.

Long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) are reported to be beneficial for cognition, but limited consumption of some fish is recommended due to high concentrations of heavy metals ...and persistent organics.
We aimed to determine whether dietary ω-3 PUFAs from fish consumption are associated with higher cognitive scores in older adults and explored the associations of mixtures of ω-3 PUFAs and blood concentrations of lead, cadmium, selenium, and methylmercury on cognitive performance.
We conducted a cross-sectional study with data from the NHANES 2011-2014, assessing cognitive scores of immediate recall, delayed recall, and executive function in adults ≥60 y (n = 3123). We performed multivariate linear regressions and mixture models utilizing the quantile-based g-computation method to identify associations between monthly fish consumption or dietary ω-3 PUFAs with blood concentrations of lead, cadmium, methyl mercury, and selenium on cognitive scores.
Fish consumption had significant positive associations with all 3 cognitive scores, whereas dietary ω-3 PUFAs were only significantly associated with the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) scores. Mixture analysis showed significant positive associations with DSST scores for fish consumption (β: 0.88; 95% CI: 0.48, 1.29) and dietary ω-3 PUFAs (β: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.78) with positive component weights for fish consumption, dietary ω-3 PUFAs, and blood selenium and negative component weight for blood cadmium concentrations.
Our findings support dietary recommendations for older adults to consume fish to maintain cognitive function, likely due to biomolecular actions of ω-3 PUFAs that increase neuronal membrane fluidity, have antioxidation activity, and restore cell damage. The combination of selenium and fish consumption or ω-3 PUFAs was associated with reduced decline in cognitive scores and less negative associations from exposures to lead, cadmium, and mercury compounds.
We analyze a set of 89 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) that have both optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry to derive distances and construct low-redshift (z ≤ 0.04) Hubble diagrams. We construct ...mean light curve (LC) templates using a hierarchical Bayesian model. We explore both Gaussian process (GP) and template methods for fitting the LCs and estimating distances, while including peculiar-velocity and photometric uncertainties. For the 56 SNe Ia with both optical and NIR observations near maximum light, the GP method yields a NIR-only Hubble-diagram with a root mean square (rms) of mag when referenced to the NIR maxima. For each NIR band, a comparable GP method rms is obtained when referencing to NIR-max or B-max. Using NIR LC templates referenced to B-max yields a larger rms value of mag. Fitting the corresponding optical data using standard LC fitters that use LC shape and color corrections yields larger rms values of 0.179 0.018 mag with SALT2 and mag with SNooPy. Applying our GP method to subsets of SNe Ia NIR LCs at NIR maximum light, even without corrections for LC shape, color, or host-galaxy dust reddening, provides smaller rms in the inferred distances, at the ∼2.3-4.1 level, than standard optical methods that correct for those effects. Our ongoing RAISIN program on the Hubble Space Telescope will exploit this promising infrared approach to limit systematic errors when measuring the expansion history of the universe in order to constrain dark energy.
We present year-long, near-infrared (NIR) Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3 observations of Mira variables in the water megamaser host galaxy NGC 4258. Miras are asymptotic giant branch variables ...that can be divided into oxygen- (O-) and carbon- (C-) rich subclasses. Oxygen-rich Miras follow a tight (scatter ∼0.14 mag) period-luminosity relation (PLR) in the NIR and can be used to measure extragalactic distances. The water megamaser in NGC 4258 gives a geometric distance to the galaxy accurate to 2.6% that can serve to calibrate the Mira PLR. We develop criteria for detecting and classifying O-rich Miras with optical and NIR data as well as NIR data alone. In total, we discover 438 Mira candidates that we classify with high confidence as O-rich. Our most stringent criteria produce a sample of 139 Mira candidates that we use to measure a PLR. We use the OGLE-III sample of O-rich Miras in the Large Magellanic Cloud to obtain a relative distance modulus, 4258 − LMC = 10.95 0.01 (statistical) 0.06 (systematic) mag, that is statistically consistent with the relative distance determined using Cepheids. These results demonstrate the feasibility of discovering and characterizing Miras using the NIR with the HST and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope and using those Miras to measure extragalactic distances and determine the Hubble constant.
Air pollution increases risk of respiratory disease but prior research has focused on particulate matter and criteria air pollutants, and there are few studies on respiratory effects of volatile ...organic compounds (VOC). We examined zip code level relationships between emergency room (ER) visits for respiratory illness and VOC pollution in New York State from 2010 to 2018. Detailed information on VOC pollution was derived from the National Emissions Inventory, which provides point source information on VOC emissions at the zip code level. We considered four respiratory diseases: asthma, acute upper respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lower respiratory disease, using mixed effects regression with a random intercept to account for county level variability in single pollutant models, and Random Forest Regression (RFR) to assess relative importance of VOC exposures when considered together in multipollutant models.
Single pollutant models show associations between respiratory-related ER visits with all pollutants of interest across all study years, even after adjusting for poverty and smoking by zip code. The largest relative single pollutant effect sizes considered included benzene, ethylbenzene, and total (summed) VOCs. Results from RFR including all VOC exposures indicate that ethylbenzene has the greatest variable importance for asthma, acute upper respiratory infections, and COPD, with toluene and benzene most important for lower respiratory ailments. RFR results also demonstrate presence of pairwise interactive effects between VOC pollutants. Our findings show that local VOC pollution may offer a significant contribution to the risk of respiratory disease-related ER visits, and that effects vary by illness and by VOC compound. ER visit rates for respiratory illness were elevated in high poverty zip codes, although this may be attributable to the fact that the poor lack basic access to health care and use ERs more frequently for routine care.

We apply BayeSN, our new hierarchical Bayesian model for the SEDs of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), to analyse the griz light curves of 157 nearby SNe Ia (0.015 < z < 0.08) from the public ...Foundation Supernova Survey data set. We train a new version of BayeSN, continuous from 0.35 to 0.95 μm, which we use to model the properties of SNe Ia in the rest-frame z-band, study the properties of dust in their host galaxies, and construct a Hubble diagram of SN Ia distances determined from full griz light curves. Our griz Hubble diagram has a low total RMS of 0.13 mag using BayeSN, compared to 0.16 mag using SALT2. Additionally, we test the consistency of the dust law RV between low- and high-mass host galaxies by using our model to fit the full time- and wavelength-dependent SEDs of SNe Ia up to moderate reddening (peak apparent B − V ≲ 0.3). Splitting the population at the median host mass, we find RV = 2.84 ± 0.31 in low-mass hosts, and RV = 2.58 ± 0.23 in high-mass hosts, both consistent with the global value of RV = 2.61 ± 0.21 that we estimate for the full sample. For all choices of mass split we consider, RV is consistent across the step within ≲ 1.2σ. Modelling population distributions of dust laws in low- and high-mass hosts, we find that both subsamples are highly consistent with the full sample’s population mean μ(RV) = 2.70 ± 0.25 with a 95 per cent upper bound on the population σ(RV) < 0.61. The RV population means are consistent within ≲ 1.2σ. We find that simultaneous fitting of host-mass-dependent dust properties within our hierarchical model does not account for the conventional mass step.
