A response by Peter J. Katzenstein reviews the main arguments of, A World of Regions (2005), & addresses three major points raised in the preceding comments: analytical eclecticism, the American ...imperium, & Japan & Germany as regional core states. The important link between both Asian & European regionalism & the American imperium is emphasized, along with the benefits of using an eclectic approach to study regionalism. It is maintained that analytical eclecticism depends on the development of alternative research traditions which avoid arguments about metatheory & provide both a common knowledge & theoretical vocabulary. Analytical eclecticism also can help to identify & solve problems that arise in world politics. Other issues discussed include how the end of the Cold War changed the dynamics of world politics; the vital role of US foreign policy in the development of bilateral links with Asia & multilateral ones with Europe; & the crucial role played by core states in linking Asia & Europe to America. Suggestions are offered for future work on the regional dynamics of world politics. J. Lindroth
In thinking about Deutsch as a teacher one fact stands out. His mind soared. What was so extraordinary for his students, was to him a way of life. It happened spontaneously in any setting: while ...answering questions in a lecture hall filled with 250 undergraduates; while debating research strategies in an advanced graduate seminar; and in discussions, one-on-one. Deutsch often appeared to be unprepared for class, ready to jump on any possible diversion. The unfocused questions of his students were opportunities for him to teach us how to soar. Rather than 'winging it', he was simply taking another exhilarating leap. Deutsch's scholarship was visionary and transcended an emphasis on the power to threaten and hurt. Imbued by a sociological perspective on politics his innovative analysis of pluralistic security communities, islands of peaceful international relations, became a relevant utopia to which Deutsch held with iron conviction at times when others could only see the stark reality of superpower confrontation.
Area studies in the United States is under siege. Government and foundations are turning their attention and funds elsewhere. Although they operate from very diffrent quarters, critics are taking ...area studies harshly to task for both alleged errors of commission and omission. Yet mine is an optimistic message. These difficulties must be seen within the context of a change in the demographic composition of graduate studies in the U.S. An infusion of intellectual energy from foreign graduate students and post-docs is leading to a reinvention of traditional area studies as global networks of scholarly engagement. Over the longer term these networks, and the scholarship they will create and sustain, bode well for the continued intellectual vitality of this field of scholarship.
▪ Abstract For half a century, Ernst B. Haas was an extraordinarily prolific contributor to theoretical debates in international relations. His work focused on the question of continuity and ...transformation in the system of states. His substantive writings are extremely diverse and can be difficult, so no overall appreciation has ever been attempted. This essay pulls together the major strands of Haas' theoretical work into a coherent whole and seeks to make it accessible to the broadest possible audience of IR scholars. The first section locates Haas in the overall theoretical milieu in which his thinking evolved, and it identifies some core intellectual choices he made. The next three sections summarize Haas' main theoretical contributions to the fields of European integration, the study of change at the level of the world polity, and nationalism.
Processes of globalization are occurring in a world marked by processes of regional integration that are comparable though different. Integration processes in both Asia and Europe are open to global ...forces and marked by multiple centres of influence. In Asia, integration processes occur in informal and inclusive network structures. This contrasts with the more formal and exclusive pattern that characterizes the integration process among continental European states. Our analysis of international politics could be enriched if it took more account of these emerging structures in different world regions.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, West Germany was considered to be one of the world's most successful economic and political systems. In his seminal 1987 analysis of West Germany's 'semisovereign' ...system of governance, Peter Katzenstein attributed this success to a combination of a fragmented polity, consensus politics and incremental policy changes. However, unification in 1990 has both changed Germany's institutional configuration and created economic and social challenges on a huge scale. This 2005 volume therefore asks whether semisovereignty still exists in contemporary Germany and, crucially, whether it remains an asset in terms of addressing these challenges. By shadowing and building on the original study, an eminent team of British, German and American scholars analyses institutional changes and the resulting policy developments in key sectors, with Peter Katzenstein himself providing the conclusion. Together, the chapters provide a landmark assessment of the outcomes produced by one of the world's most important countries.
