We search for signatures of gravitational lensing in the binary black hole events detected by Advanced LIGO and Virgo during their first two observational runs. In particular, we look for three ...effects: (1) evidence of lensing magnification in the individual signals due to galaxy lenses, (2) evidence of multiple images due to strong lensing by galaxies, and (3) evidence of wave optics effects due to point-mass lens. We find no compelling evidence of any of these signatures in the observed gravitational wave signals. However, as the sensitivities of gravitational wave detectors improve in the future, detecting lensed events may become quite likely.

Along their path from source to observer, gravitational waves may be gravitationally lensed by massive objects leading to distortion in the signals. Searches for these distortions amongst ...the observed signals from the current detector network have already been carried out, though there have as yet been no confident detections. However, predictions of the observation rate of lensing suggest detection in the future is a realistic possibility. Therefore, preparations need to be made to thoroughly investigate the candidate lensed signals. In this work, we present some follow-up analyses that could be applied to assess the significance of such events and ascertain what information may be extracted about the lens-source system by applying these analyses to a number of O3 candidate events, even if these signals did not yield a high significance for any of the lensing hypotheses. These analyses cover the strong lensing, millilensing, and microlensing regimes. Applying these additional analyses does not lead to any additional evidence for lensing in the candidates that have been examined. However, it does provide important insight into potential avenues to deal with high-significance candidates in future observations.
Context. Two-point correlation functions are used throughout cosmology as a measure for the statistics of random fields. When used in Bayesian parameter estimation, their likelihood function is ...usually replaced by a Gaussian approximation. However, this has been shown to be insufficient. Aims. For the case of Gaussian random fields, we search for an exact probability distribution of correlation functions, which could improve the accuracy of future data analyses. Methods. We use a fully analytic approach, first expanding the random field in its Fourier modes, and then calculating the characteristic function. Finally, we derive the probability distribution function using integration by residues. We use a numerical implementation of the full analytic formula to discuss the behaviour of this function. Results. We derive the univariate and bivariate probability distribution function of the correlation functions of a Gaussian random field, and outline how higher joint distributions could be calculated. We give the results in the form of mode expansions, but in one special case we also find a closed-form expression. We calculate the moments of the distribution and, in the univariate case, we discuss the Edgeworth expansion approximation. We also comment on the difficulties in a fast and exact numerical implementation of our results, and on possible future applications.
ABSTRACT
Gravitational waves provide a unique tool for observational astronomy. While the first LIGO–Virgo catalogue of gravitational-wave transients (GWTC-1) contains 11 signals from black hole and ...neutron star binaries, the number of observations is increasing rapidly as detector sensitivity improves. To extract information from the observed signals, it is imperative to have fast, flexible, and scalable inference techniques. In a previous paper, we introduced bilby: a modular and user-friendly Bayesian inference library adapted to address the needs of gravitational-wave inference. In this work, we demonstrate that bilby produces reliable results for simulated gravitational-wave signals from compact binary mergers, and verify that it accurately reproduces results reported for the 11 GWTC-1 signals. Additionally, we provide configuration and output files for all analyses to allow for easy reproduction, modification, and future use. This work establishes that bilby is primed and ready to analyse the rapidly growing population of compact binary coalescence gravitational-wave signals.
Contact dermatitis is a common clinical problem, with prevalent sensitizers being cosmetics, metals, medicines, and plants. Plants of the Toxicodendron species cause allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) ...in 50% to 70% of the population. Pimecrolimus is an ascomycin macrolactam developed for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for atopic dermatitis. There are studies supporting the effectiveness of macrolactams when administered before antigen challenge, but there are no studies describing the effectiveness of these drugs in the treatment of established human ACD.
To investigate the effect of topical pimecrolimus in the treatment of Toxicodendron-induced ACD once rash is evident.
Poison ivy tincture was applied to the bilateral anterior forearms of 12 subjects with Finn Chambers (Allerderm Diagnostic Products, Petaluma, CA). After dermatitis was evident, volunteers treated each arm twice daily with either 1% topical pimecrolimus cream or placebo in a blinded fashion. Outcomes measured were a dermatitis grading score and time to rash and itch resolution.
The median +/- SEM time for rash resolution was 16.55 +/- 1.59 days in the treatment group and 16.27 +/- 1.82 days in the placebo group (P = 0.601). The median time for itch resolution was 4.73 +/- 1.56 days in the treatment group and 4.91 +/- 1.59 days in the placebo group (P = 0.167). The average dermatitis score was 2.26 +/- 0.17 in the treatment group and 2.32 +/- 0.15 in the placebo group (P = 0.62).
The application of topical pimecrolimus is ineffective in the treatment of ongoing Toxicodendron-induced ACD.
In this paper we show that defect simulation is a basis for yield enhancement strategies. These strategies involve identification of the yield detractors (i.e. identification of spot defect ...characteristics) and yield oriented layout design, which uses information about defects. Information about key yield detractors can be obtained in a time and cost efficient manner using defect simulation. By comparison of process variants and of SRAMs with different layouts, the sensitivity of the method for process changes as well as for design differences is illustrated. This leads to the conclusion that the defect and yield simulation tools can be used for yield oriented design. The enormous cost and time savings demonstrated in this work give a signal to enforce the introduction of design based failure simulation methods into the yield learning process.
