This study addressed the functionality of genetic circuits carrying natural regulatory elements of
Clostridium acetobutylicum
ATCC 824 in the presence of the respective inducer molecules. ...Specifically, promoters and their regulators involved in diverse carbon source utilization were characterized using mCherryOpt or beta-galactosidase as a reporter. Consequently, most of the genetic circuits tested in this study were functional in
Clostridium acetobutylicum
ATCC 824 in the presence of an inducer, leading to the expression of reporter proteins. These genetic sensor-regulators were found to be transferable to another
Clostridium
species, such as
Clostridium beijerinckii
NCIMB 8052. The gradual expression of reporter protein was observed as a function of the carbohydrates of interest. A xylose-inducible promoter allows a titratable and robust expression of a reporter protein with stringency and efficacy. This xylose-inducible circuit was seen to enable induction of the expression of reporter proteins in the presence of actual sugar mixtures incorporated in woody hydrolysate wherein glucose and xylose are present as predominant carbon sources.
We evaluated the long-term outcomes of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) according to β-blocker therapy using landmark analysis. Although β-blockers have been shown to improve outcomes for ...ischemic heart disease, the long-term effects and optimal treatment duration of use after CABG remain unknown.
From January 2001 to December 2014, 5382 CABG patients were stratified into 2 groups according to β-blocker therapy at discharge (β-blocker group: 3677 68.3%, no β-blocker group: 1705 31.7%).
The primary outcome was all-cause death during 48 months of follow-up. Using propensity score-matched analysis, β-blocker therapy was associated with all-cause death during the 48-month follow-up (hazard ratio HR, 0.62; 95% confidence interval CI, 0.41-0.95; P = .03). The landmark analysis demonstrated that the effect of β-blockers on all-cause death was particularly significant within the first 12 months of therapy (HR, 0.37; 95% CI, 0.19-0.80; P = .01) but not after 12 months (HR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.56-1.53; P = .77).
The benefits of postdischarge β-blockers may be limited to 1 year after CABG, but further studies are required to confirm this finding.
The uncrossing partially ordered set Pn is defined on the set of matchings on 2n points on a circle represented with wires. The order relation is τ' ≤ τ in Pn if and only if 0 is obtained by ...resolving a crossing of τ. I identify elements in Pn with affine permutations of type (0, 2 n). Using this identidication, I adapt a technique in Reading for finding recursions for the cd-indices of intervals in Bruhat order of Coxeter groups to the uncrossing poset Pn. As a result, I produce recursions for the cd-indices of intervals in the uncrossing poset Pn. I also obtain a recursion for the ab-indices of intervals in the poset Pˆn, the poset P n with a unique minimum 0ˆ adjoined. Reiner-Stanton-White defined the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) associated to a finite cyclic group action on a finite set and a polynomial. Sagan observed the CSP on the set of non-crossing matchings with the q-Catalan polynomial. Bowling-Liang presented similar results on the set of k-crossing matchings for 1 ≤ k ≤ 3. In this dissertation, I focus on the set of all matchings on 2 n := {1; 2, . . . ,2n}. I find the number of matchings fixed by 2π/d rotations for d|2 n. I then find the polynomial Xn( q) such that the set of matchings together with X n(q) and the cyclic group of order 2n exhibits the CSP.
In this study, porosity assessment of cement mortars containing Precious Slag (PS) Ball - an industrial waste produced by rapid cooling of slag generated from steel making process by Slag Atomizing ...Technology - is done by Back-Scattered Electron (BSE) image analysis. PS incorporated mortars were fabricated and subsequently evaluated for compressive strength. BSE images were analyzed by pore segmentation method. Binarization on the images using Otsu's thresholding method was done followed by the porosity determination. As the interfacial attributes were the primary concern, the porosity was determined from the aggregate surface to the 100 μm width. A total of 24 sections were analyzed and the mean values were plotted. Although the PS Ball incorporated mortar exhibited 10% lower strength at 28-day age, it showed stronger and less porous aggregate- matrix interface between (from particle surface up to 35 μm width) as compared to that of normal mortar containing sand, which is justifiable by the chemical composition of PS Ball attributed to the potential chemical binding. Further, the porosity decreased as the distance from aggregate surface increased. While the use of PS Ball is environmentally friendly, its enhanced interfacial properties with some strength loss of resulting cement mortars encourages its use in sustainable construction materials.
This study examined the efficacy of a culturally responsive housing with services model for Asian-American older adults and persons with developmental disabilities separately, and with both for an ...interaction effect. Study participants, including 278 Whites and 75 Asian Americans, lived in 10 properties of public housing with services in Portland, OR. All Asian-American participants (except four) were immigrants from China, Korea, and Vietnam, and were well connected through community-based health and social services that were delivered onsite and at a nearby center by staff members who were also immigrants from these three countries. Asian-American participants were older, very poor, with limited English proficiency, but, reported stronger family connection and satisfaction with the living environment, which reflected in lower health care needs and utilization, and better quality of life. Participants with developmental disabilities comprised 27 individuals who reported greater health care needs, service utilization, and food insecurity. Asian-American participants with developmental disabilities reported stronger family connections. Regression analyses found level of health care needs was consistently the strongest predictor, followed by food insecurity and family connection, in predicting perceived quality of life. Findings offer insight into a culturally responsive housing services model where minority culture is no longer a risk factor and limited English language proficiency is no longer a cause of isolation.
Doping lanthanide ions into colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals is a promising strategy for combining their sharp and efficient 4f-4f emission with the strong broadband absorption and ...low-phonon-energy crystalline environment of semiconductors to make new solution-processable spectral-conversion nanophosphors, but synthesis of this class of materials has proven extraordinarily challenging because of fundamental chemical incompatibilities between lanthanides and most intermediate-gap semiconductors. Here, we present a new strategy for accessing lanthanide-doped visible-light-absorbing semiconductor nanocrystals by demonstrating selective cation exchange to convert precursor Yb
-doped NaInS
nanocrystals into Yb
-doped PbIn
S
nanocrystals. Excitation spectra and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements confirm that Yb
is both incorporated within the PbIn
S
nanocrystals and sensitized by visible-light photoexcitation of these nanocrystals. This combination of strong broadband visible absorption, sharp near-infrared emission, and long (>400 μs) emission lifetimes in a colloidal nanocrystal system opens promising new opportunities for both fundamental-science and next-generation spectral-conversion applications such as luminescent solar concentrators.
