The physical motivations, present status, main results in study of cosmic rays and in the field of gamma-ray astronomy as well future plans of the TAIGA-1 (Tunka Advanced Instrument for cosmic ray ...physics and Gamma Astronomy) project are presented. The TAIGA observatory addresses ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and astroparticle physics at energies from a few TeV to several PeV, as well as cosmic ray physics from 100 TeV to several EeV. The pilot TAIGA-1 complex is located in the Tunka valley, ~50 km west from the southern tip of the lake Baikal.
A description of the detection and data-acquisition systems of the Cherenkov water calorimeter of the NEVOD Experimental Complex, which is a unique scientific facility located on the Earth’s surface, ...is presented. In the development of these systems, a solution is sought to the problem of measuring the energy of cascade showers initiated by single muons and the energy deposited by high-multiplicity muon bundles in a wide energy range.
Results of analysis of experimental data on cascade showers with energies of 0.1 – 10 TeV initiated by muons in the Cherenkov water detector NEVOD are presented. The method of selection and ...reconstruction of cascade parameters in the volume of the detector is discussed. Experimental distributions of cascade axes in zenith angle and energy spectrum of cascades are obtained. The measured distributions are compared with results of calculations.
The calibration telescope system of the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector is described. Scintillation counters are used in the setup as detecting elements. The detection system is equipped with logical ...and amplitude channels and provides the calibration of the Cherenkov water detector. It can also be used to investigate the electron and muon components of an extensive air shower. A method for amplitude calibration of the scintillation counters is described, with which it is possible to estimate the number of detected charged particles. The results for the 1.5-year operation of the setup as a detector of extensive air showers are presented.
Energy characteristics of the muon component of extensive air showers (EASes) are investigated at the NEVOD experimental complex in order to solve the problem of a detected excess of muons in EASes ...at ultrahigh energies, relative to simulation results. The dependences of the energy deposit of muon bundles on the zenith angle and the local muon density are obtained for primary energies of 10–1000 PeV. The results from comparing the data to simulations performed with the CORSIKA program are presented.
An experiment on the measurements of the energy deposit of inclined cosmic ray muon bundles is being conducted at the experimental complex NEVOD (MEPhI). The complex includes the Cherenkov water ...calorimeter with a volume of 2000 m3 and the coordinate-tracking detector DECOR with a total area of 70 m2. The DECOR data are used to determine the local muon densities in the bundle events and their arrival directions, while the energy deposits (and hence the average muon energy loss) are evaluated from the Cherenkov calorimeter response. Average energy loss carries information about the mean muon energy in the bundles. The detection of the bundles in a wide range of muon multiplicities and zenith angles gives the opportunity to explore the energy range of primary cosmic ray particles from about 10 to 1000 PeV in the frame of a single experiment with a relatively small compact setup. Experimental results on the dependence of the muon bundle energy deposit on the zenith angle and the local muon density are presented and compared with expectations based on simulations of the EAS muon component with the CORSIKA code.
Results are presented from analyzing experimental data on 0.1–10 TeV cascade showers generated by muons in the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector. The procedure for selecting and reconstructing the ...parameters of events with cascades in the detector volume is discussed. Results are presented from measurements of the zenith angle distribution of cascades for different energies. The measured distributions are compared to results from calculations.
The spatial distribution of the Cherenkov light generated by cascade showers is analyzed using the NEVOD Cherenkov water detector. The dependence of the Cherenkov light intensity on the depth of ...shower development at various distances from the shower axis is investigated for the first time. The experimental data are compared with the Cherenkov light distributions predicted by various models for the scattering of cascade particles.
Change of the energy characteristics of muon bundles with an increase of the primary cosmic ray particles energy can be a key to solving the problem of muon excess in the extensive air showers (EAS) ...observed in a number of experiments. In this work the data on the energy deposit of multi-muon events in a wide range of zenith angles (and as a consequence in a wide range of primary particles energies) obtained with NEVOD-DECOR setup over a long time period are presented. The experimental data are compared with the results of simulations of EAS muon component performed using CORSIKA code.

A new setup for registration of the electromagnetic component of the EAS at the "knee" region of the energy spectrum of primary cosmic rays (PCR) is now under construction on the basis of the ...experimental complex NEVOD-DECOR (Moscow, Russia). The EAS array detecting system has a cluster organization. Clusters are located in the MEPhI campus. The specific features of the array registering system that provides particle detection, data acquisition, cluster synchronization and events selection are discussed. The results of counter characteristics study are also presented.
