Abstract Gunshot Residue (GSR) is residual material from the discharge of a firearm, which frequently provides crucial information in criminal investigations. Changes in ammunition manufacturing are ...gradually phasing out the heavy metals on which current forensic GSR analysis is based, and the latest Heavy Metal Free (HMF) primers urgently demand new forensic solutions. Proton scanning microbeam Ion Beam Analysis (IBA), in conjunction with the Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with an Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (SEM-EDS), can be introduced into forensic analysis to solve both new and old problems, with a procedure entirely commensurate with current forensic practice. Six cartridges producing GSR particles known to be interesting in casework by both experience and the literature were selected for this study. A standard procedure to relocate the same particles previously analysed by SEM-EDS, based on both secondary electron (SE) and X-ray imaging was developed and tested. Elemental Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) mapping of the emitted X-rays allowed relocation in a scan of 10 μm × 10 μm of even a 1 μm GSR particle. The comparison between spectra from the same particle obtained by SEM-EDS and IBA-PIXE showed that the latter is much more sensitive at mid-high energies. Results that are very interesting in a forensic context were obtained with particles from a cartridge containing mercury fulminate in the primer. Particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE) maps of a particles from HMF cartridges allowed identification of Boron and Sodium in particles from hands using the10 B(p,α1 γ)7 Be,11 B(p,p1 γ)11 B and23 Na(p,p1 γ)23 Na reactions, which is extraordinary in a forensic context. The capability for quantitative analysis of elements within individual particles by IBA was also demonstrated, giving the opportunity to begin a new chapter in the research on GSR particles. The integrated procedure that was developed, which makes use of all the IBA signals, has unprecedented characterisation and discrimination power for GSR samples
Hereditary muscular disease is well described in racehorses, yet little is known about traumatic muscle disease associated with unaccustomed exercise or training. The objective of the study was to ...compare sedentary horses, racehorses undergoing training for the first time (unaccustomed exercise), and experienced racehorses during a training season (accustomed exercise) to investigate the effect of exercise and training on serum muscle enzyme activities and other variables. Horses were sampled prior to exercise for serum activities of aspartate amino transferase (AST), creatine kinase and other variables γ glutamyl transferase (GGT) and serum amyloid A (SAA) in a three-part study. Serum activities of AST and GGT were higher in fit racehorses (n=47) compared with sedentary horses (n=57) at a single time point (P<0.05). The monthly serum activity of AST in two-year-old racehorses (n=10) increased from month 1 to 4 of unaccustomed training (P<0.05). The serum activities of AST and GGT in three-year-old racehorses (n=12) previously accustomed to exercise sampled fortnightly to monthly showed a linear increase (P<0.05) with cumulative training days over the seven months of training, but showed minimal increase during the first four months of accustomed training. SAA was weakly correlated to cumulative training days. In conclusion, AST activity was increased by unaccustomed exercise and cumulative training stress in the racehorse. GGT appeared to be correlated to cumulative training load. Mild to moderate elevations in serum AST in racehorses may be associated with cumulative muscle damage from training or trauma associated with unaccustomed exercise.

The cerebellum has been implicated in affective and attentional processes, but little is known about corresponding neural signatures. We investigated early and late components of event-related potentials (ERPs) to emotionally arousing pictures, with and without competing attentional tasks, in a patient with an ischemic right posterior cerebellar infarction, at two months post infarct and two year follow-up. The early posterior negativity (EPN) response to highly arousing emotional cues in the competing visual attention condition revealed that the augmentation over occipital areas, as typically seen in normals, was absent post-infarct but was restored after two years. The late positive potentials (LPP) response to highly arousing emotional cues showed augmentation over frontal areas post-infarct, and over centro-parietal regions after two years. These ERP findings suggest a specific pattern of disruption of neural function associated with emotional-behavioral disturbances following cerebellar lesions, which can revert to normal with long term recovery.
Automatic cell detection in bright-field illumination microscopy is challenging due to cells' inherent optical properties. Applications including individual cell microbeam irradiation demand ...minimisation of additional cell stressing factors, so contrast-enhancing fluorescence microscopy should be avoided. Additionally, the use of optically non-homogeneous substrates amplifies the problem. This research focuses on the design of a method for automatic cell detection on polypropylene substrate, suitable for microbeam irradiation. In order to fulfil the relative requirements, the Harris corner detector was employed to detect apparent cellular features. These features-corners were clustered based on a dual-clustering technique according to the density of their distribution across the image. Weighted centroids were extracted from the clusters of corners and constituted the targets for irradiation. The proposed method identified more than 88% of the 1,738 V79 Chinese hamster cells examined. Moreover, a processing time of 2.6 s per image fulfilled the requirements for a near real-time cell detection-irradiation system.
Three decades of disease survey data have shown Verticillium wilt was one of the first major diseases of cotton recorded in the 1984–85 season. Survey reports the mean incidence was 4.1% in the ...1984–85 season and rose to 16.6% in the 1989–90 season. Prior to 1984 all commercial varieties of cotton available in Australia were susceptible to bacterial blight and the disease was common. The adoption of the resistant varieties contributed to a dramatic decline in the incidence of bacterial blight and the removal of bacterial blight as a significant pathogen to Australian cotton crops by 1992. Survey results showed the incidence of black root rot increased on farms with a long history of growing cotton during the 1990s. Fusarium wilt of cotton was first reported in New South Wales (NSW) in 1994. The disease is now widespread, being confirmed on 86 NSW farms in six of the eight cotton production areas in NSW. These four significant plant disease ‘problems’ have challenged the cotton industry in NSW. Data provided by the surveys have indicated the relative importance of each of the diseases present and the impact of cultural practices and the adoption of new varieties on disease distribution, incidence and severity. The results have therefore been used to support and justify requests for research funding and have contributed to the development of Integrated Disease Management strategies. The NSW Department of Primary Industries continues to monitor the distribution of disease and the incidence and severity present in commercial cotton crops in all production areas of NSW. The aim of this paper is to highlight four significant cotton diseases in Australia and show relationships between cultural practices and declining and increasing incidence of disease.
Bipolar affective disorder is a heritable, relatively common, severe mood disorder with lifetime prevalence up to 4%. We report the results of a genome-wide linkage analysis conducted on a cohort of ...35 Australian bipolar disorder families which identified evidence of significant linkage on chromosome 15q25-26 and suggestive evidence of linkage on chromosomes 4q, 6q and 13q. Subsequent fine-mapping of the chromosome 15q markers, using allele frequencies calculated from our cohort, gave significant results with a maximum two-point LOD score of 3.38 and multipoint LOD score of 4.58 for marker D15S130. Haplotype analysis based on pedigree-specific, identical-by-descent allele sharing, supported the location of a bipolar susceptibility gene within the Z(max-1) linkage confidence interval of 17 cM, or 6.2 Mb, between markers D15S979 and D15S816. Non-parametric and affecteds-only linkage analysis further verified the linkage signal in this region. A maximum NPL score of 3.38 (P=0.0008) obtained at 107.16 cM (near D15S130), and a maximum two-point LOD score of 2.97 obtained at marker D15S1004 (affecteds only), support the original genome-wide findings on chromosome 15q. These results are consistent with four independent positive linkage studies of mood and psychotic disorders, and raise the possibility that a common gene for susceptibility to bipolar disorder, and other psychiatric disorders may lie in this chromosome 15q25-26 region.
It is well known that broad beam irradiation with heavy ions leads to variation in the number of hit(s) received by each cell as the distribution of particles follows the Poisson statistics. Although ...the nucleus area will determine the number of hit(s) received for a given dose, variation amongst its irradiated cell population is generally not considered. In this work, we investigate the effect of the nucleus area's distribution on the survival fraction. More specifically, this work aims to explain the deviation, or tail, which might be observed in the survival fraction at high irradiation doses. For this purpose, the nucleus area distribution was added to the beam Poisson statistics and the Linear-Quadratic model in order to fit the experimental data. As shown in this study, nucleus size variation, and the associated Poisson statistics, can lead to an upward survival trend after broad beam irradiation. The influence of the distribution parameters (mean area and standard deviation) was studied using a normal distribution, along with the Linear-Quadratic model parameters (α and β). Finally, the model proposed here was successfully tested to the survival fraction of LN18 cells irradiated with a 85 keV µm(- 1) carbon ion broad beam for which the distribution in the area of the nucleus had been determined.
The high uncertainty in the Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) values of particle therapy beam, which are used in combination with the quantity absorbed dose in radiotherapy, together with the ...increase in the number of particle therapy centres worldwide necessitate a better understating of the biological effect of such modalities.
The present novel study is part of performance testing and development of a micro-calorimeter based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). Unlike other microdosimetric detectors that are used for investigating the energy distribution, this detector provides a direct measurement of energy deposition at the micrometre scale, that can be used to improve our understanding of biological effects in particle therapy application, radiation protection and environmental dosimetry. Temperature rises of less than 1μK are detectable and when combined with the low specific heat capacity of the absorber at cryogenic temperature, extremely high energy deposition sensitivity of approximately 0.4eV can be achieved.
The detector consists of 3 layers: tissue equivalent (TE) absorber, superconducting (SC) absorber and silicon substrate. Ideally all energy would be absorbed in the TE absorber and heat rise in the superconducting layer would arise due to heat conduction from the TE layer. However, in practice direct particle absorption occurs in all 3 layers and must be corrected for.
To investigate the thermal behaviour within the detector, and quantify any possible correction, particle tracks were simulated employing Geant4 (v9.6) Monte Carlo simulations. The track information was then passed to the COMSOL Multiphysics (Finite Element Method) software. The 3D heat transfer within each layer was then evaluated in a time-dependent model. For a statistically reliable outcome, the simulations had to be repeated for a large number of particles. An automated system has been developed that couples Geant4 Monte Carlo output to COMSOL for determining the expected distribution of proton tracks and their thermal contribution within the detector.
The correction factor for a 3.8MeV proton pencil beam was determined and applied to the expected spectra. The corrected microdosimetric spectra was shown to have a good agreement with the ideal spectra.
