A study of QCD coherence is presented based on a sample of about 397,000
e
+
e
-
hadronic annihilation events collected at
s
=
91
GeV with the OPAL detector at LEP. The study is based on four ...recently proposed observables that are sensitive to coherence effects in the perturbative regime. The measurement of these observables is presented, along with a comparison with the predictions of different parton shower models. The models include both conventional parton shower models and dipole antenna models. Different ordering variables are used to investigate their influence on the predictions.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder causing defects in the development of collagen type I. Clinical signs of affected dachshunds include multiple fractures of bones, joint hyperlaxity ...and dentinogenesis imperfecta. Recently, a recessive mutation in the SERPINH1 gene was detected in dachshunds and enabled the development of a DNA test to identify dachshunds carrying the mutation. The purpose of the present study was to analyse the dachshund breeding population for the frequency of the SERPINH1 mutation among the nine different breed varieties in dachshunds, birth years and countries of origin. We genotyped the OI-associated SERPINH1 mutation in 1352 dachshunds from 12 different European countries including all nine varieties. Genotyping was done using a restriction fragment length polymorphism validated by DNA sequence analysis. The overall frequency of OI carriers was 12.9 per cent. Across all different size varieties, the SERPINH1 mutation was over-represented in wire-haired dachshunds with 17.3 per cent OI carriers. Among the different countries, the proportion of OI carriers was highest in Germany with 20.4 per cent. The test is useful for dachshund breeders to prevent the occurrence of OI-affected dogs and as a diagnostic tool for veterinarians.

The Bayesian Analysis Toolkit is a C++ package centered around Markov-chain Monte Carlo sampling. It is used in high-energy physics analyses by experimentalists and theorists alike. The software has ...matured over the last few years. We present new features to enter version 1.0, then summarize some of the software-engineering lessons learned and give an outlook on future versions.
The ability to read, use and develop code efficiently and successfully is a key ingredient in modern particle physics. We report the experience of a training program, identified as "Advanced ...Programming Concepts", that introduces software concepts, methods and techniques to work effectively on a daily basis in a HEP experiment or other programming intensive fields. This paper illustrates the principles, motivations and methods that shape the "Advanced Computing Concepts" training program, the knowledge base that it conveys, an analysis of the feedback received so far, and the integration of these concepts in the software development process of the experiments as well as its applicability to a wider audience.
