Five divergent genotypes of two-rowed winter barley (Vada, Djerdap, NS-293, Jagodinac and Sladoran) have been selected for diallel crossing in order to study the mode of inheritance, the gene effect ...and the components genetic variance for the productive tillering in F1 and F2 generation. The variability of investigated trait differed. Different modes of inheritance (partial dominance, dominance and overdominance) and partial dominance were found in the F1 and F2 generation, respectively. The genetic variance components, average degree of dominance and regression line indicated partial dominance in the inheritance of tillering. The range of the obtained values of heritability for the tillering was found to be very wide.
Psychiatry is the branch of medicine concerned with the defining and diagnosing mental disorders, finding ways of treatment, developing methods for determining causes, and conceiving measures for ...prevention of mental disorders. Psychiatry has greatly advanced over the last two decades. In our country, however, due to prejudice and ignorance, mental disorders are still often considered incurable and alarming by the general public as well as by physicians, and psychiatric patients are stigmatized and marginalized by the society.
Psychiatry has an important role in the contemporary medicine and society in general, considering the increasing number of people suffering from mental disorders, disability they cause, and their frequent simultaneous occurrence with various physical illnesses, especially chronic ones. Comorbidity of physical and mental disorders makes the treatment more difficult and time-consuming, whereas an unrecognized and untreated mental disorder has a negative impact on the prognosis and outcome of the physical illness.
Because of the great advances in psychopharmacology and etiopathological research, as well as development of new classifications, contemporary psychiatry integrates biological, psychological and social aspects into an integrative biopsychosocial approach to etiopathogenesis, manifestations, course, treatment, and outcome of mental disorders. In fact, this means that the etiological factors of a psychiatric disorder include mutually interacting biological (genetic, neuroanatomical, biochemical, etc), psychological (personality/temperament), and social (background, stressful life events) factors. Therefore, the treatment itself involves application of biological, psychological and social methods. THE POSITION OF'PSYCHIATRY IN OUR COUNTRY: The significant increase in the number of people suffering fiom mental disorders (depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse disorders) underlines the importance of psychiatry in our country. It is also clear that psychiatric services need to be reformed. In order for this reorganization to be effective it is necessary to review the current conditions, include both mental health specialists and general physicians, provide financial resources, and carry it out gradually, with an adequate support from the health care administration.

The aim of this study was to investigate encapsulation processes of Thymus serpyllum L. aqueous extract in chitosan and alginate-chitosan microbeads and its consecutive release. Chitosan microbeads ...were prepared in water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion, while alginate-chitosan microbeads were prepared by electrostatic extrusion. The outer surface of microbeads was observed by optical microscopy. The interaction between chitosan or alginate-chitosan microbeads and extract compounds were analyzed by FT-IR. Release profiles of polyphenolic compounds from the microbeads in water was monitored. Experimental results show that the applied methods gave chitosan and alginate-chitosan microbeads with an average diameter of 390 μm and 890 μm, respectively. FT-IR analyses confirmed the presence of polyphenolic extract within the synthetized microbeads. The encapsulation efficiency was determined with respect to total polyphenolic content. Chitosan microbeads showed lower encapsulation efficiency of ~10%, but prolonged release, compared to alginate–chitosan microbeads where encapsulation efficiency was ~70%. The uniformity of the obtained microbeads was confirmed by optical microscopy. This study showed that, by some synthesis modification of both, chitosan and alginate-chitosan microbeads have the potential to be used for encapsulation of aqueous phenolic extracts.
Human natural leukocytic interferon (HNLI) and recombinant interferon (rIFN) alpha 2c can be used in the therapy of basal cell carcinoma. Seventy-two patients were treated for 3 to 6 weeks with a ...single dose of 400,000 to 1,200,000 units (HNLI) and 2,000,000 to 5,000,000 units (rIFN alpha 2c). According to histopathologic and clinical findings, 52 patients were cured, and cancer cells were not found in the biopsy material taken after HNLI treatment for the second biopsy. In nine of 72 patients the cancer lesion was reduced 25% to 90%. In 11 patients it was not reduced or was reduced less than 25%. With rIFN alpha 2c therapy given five times per week for 4 weeks, histopathologic and clinical findings showed that five patients out of 12 were cured, and cancer cells were not found in the biopsy material taken after treatment. In seven patients out of 12 the cancer lesion was reduced 25% to 90%. Both types of interferons are effective in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma. Side effects were mild.
Cilj studije bio je procijeniti učinkovitost intralezijskog injektiranja triamcinolon acetonida kod primarnog i recidivirajućeg halaziona. U ispitivanje je bilo uključeno 30 bolesnika s primarnim i ...recidivirajućim halazionom (37 slučajeva) i 24 bolesnika kao kontrolna skupina. Bolesnici s primarnim i recidivirajućim halazionom primili su intralezijsku injekciju 0,1 do 0,2 mL triamcinolon acetonida (40 mg/mL), dok su bolesnici kontrolne skupine primili intralezijsku injekciju 0,1 do 0,2 mL 0,9%-tne NaCl. Podatci o veličini lezije, uključujući digitalnu fotografiju u boji, regresiji ili recidivu lezije te o cjelokupnom oftalmološkom pregledu bilježili su se u vrijeme injektiranja te nakon jednog ili dva tjedna do povlačenja ili kirurškog odstranjenja lezije. Uspješnost je definirana kao najmanje 80%-tno smanjenje veličine lezije bez recidiva. Povlačenje lezije utvrđeno je u 35 slučajeva nakon jedne ili dvije injekcije, srednje vrijeme do povlačenja od 15,27±6,12 dana. Potkožno injektiranje steroida triamcinolon acetonida kod primarnog i recidivirajućeg halaziona pokazalo se jednostavnom i učinkovitom terapijom za halazion.

Clinically and histologically 19 of 32 patients were cured and tumor cells were not found in the material taken after interferon treatment for the second biopsy. In ten patients tumor size was reduced 25-90%, and in three patients tumor size was not reduced according to clinical findings. With recombinant HulFN alpha 2c therapy given 5 times per week for 4 weeks. Four of ten patients with similar tumors were cured clinically and histologically clinical findings. In five patients tumor size was reduced 25-90%, while in one patient there was no reduction in tumor size. Both types of interferons are effective in the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma. Side reactions were mild.
Kako se broj radioterapijskih i radioloških dijagnostičkih postupaka iz godine u godinu povećava, tako raste i primjena hlapljivih anestetika za opću anesteziju. Iako se smatralo sigurnim, izlaganje ...hlapljivim anesteticima može izazvati različite štetne učinke, a u kombinaciji s ionizirajućim zračenjem može izazvati i sinergijske učinke. Međutim, malo se zna o oštećenju DNA koje uzrokuje ova kombinacija u dozama primijenjenima u jednom izlaganju u radioterapiji. Kako bismo saznali više o tome, alkalnim komet-testom analizirali smo oštećenje DNA i odgovor na popravak u jetrenom tkivu muških Swiss albino miševa nakon izlaganja samo izofluranu, sevofluranu ili halotanu, odnosno u kombinaciji sa zračenjem od 1 ili 2 Gy. Uzorci su uzeti odmah (0 h) te 2, 6 i 24 sata nakon izlaganja. U usporedbi s kontrolom, najveća oštećenja DNA utvrđena su u miševa koji su primili halotan, sam ili u kombinaciji sa zračenjem od 1 ili 2 Gy. Sevofluran i izofluran pokazali su zaštitne učinke nakon izlaganja zračenju od 1 Gy, a pri 2 Gy prve nuspojave pojavile su se 24 sata nakon izlaganja. Iako učinci hlapljivih anestetika ovise o metabolizmu jetre, otkrivanje nepopravljenog oštećenja DNA 24 sata nakon kombinirane izloženosti sa zračenjem od 2 Gy upućuje na to da trebamo nastaviti istraživati kombinirane učinke hlapljivih anestetika i ionizirajućega zračenja na stabilnost genoma i obuhvatiti šire razdoblje nakon jednokratne izloženosti (duže od 24 sata). Također treba obuhvatiti višekratna izlaganja kao realističniji scenarij u liječenju radioterapijom.
