In the paper is interpreted the travelogue »Symphonies of the Adriatic, Italy, Paris and London« by Josip Kosor in the key of the expressionist and utopian idea of the world. The beauty of the landscape, art, vision of messianic personalities, and finally the reflection of ethics as inseparable categories of beauty, encourage the author to reflect on the aesthetics and mysticism.
Background/Aim. The use of cisplatin as a chemotherapeutic opened the door to the new metal-based drug research. New complexes containing metals such as platinum, palladium, ruthenium and gold have ...recently been analyzed as potential antitumor agents. The aim of the study was to investigate the cytotoxicity of Au(III) complexes with pincer-type ligands against cervical carcinoma cells (HeLa), breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 and 4T1) and colon carcinoma cells (HCT116 and CT26), as well as to examine the type and mechanism of cell death that these complexes induced in cancer cells. Methods. The cytotoxicity of Au(III) complexes was investigated by MTT assay. The apoptosis of the treated cancer cells was measured by flow cytometry and applying Annexin V/7AAD staining. The expressions of active proapoptotic protein Bax, antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 and the percentage of cells containing cleaved caspase-3 in the treated cancer cells were determined by flow cytometry. Results. Complex 1 showed the most potent antitumor effect on HeLa cells, both compared to other two examined gold complexes and compared to cisplatin. The IC50 values on HeLa cells after 72 hours were 1.3 ? 0.4 ?M, 3.4 ? 1.3 ?M, 5.7 ? 0.6 ?M, 26.7 ? 6.5 ?M for complexes 1, 2, 3 and cisplatin, respectively. Complex 1 also exhibited the highest cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 and HCT116 cells compared to other tested compounds. The results of Annexin V/7AAD staining showed that all three gold complexes induced apoptosis in the treated cells. Our Au(III) complexes induced apoptosis by caspase-dependent mechanism, but we did not observe that the activation of an internal pathway of apoptosis occurred in the treated cancer cells. Conclusion. According to the results of our in vitro study, all three gold compounds, and especially complex 1, are promising candidates for a new generation of anticancer drugs.
Interactions of copper(II) complexes which contain S-alkyl derivatives of thiosalicylic acid (alkyl = methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl; aryl = benzyl), marked as 1-5, with guanosine-5′-monophosphate ...(5′-GMP) and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were studied. Kinetics of substitution reactions of 1-5 with 5′-GMP and CT-DNA were investigated under pseudo-first-order conditions at 310 K and pH = 7.2 in 25 mM Hepes buffer using stopped-flow method. All complexes have high affinity toward studied bio-molecules. Additionally, interactions with CT-DNA were followed by absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence quenching measurements. The results indicate that complexes bind to DNA exhibiting high binding constants (K

). During the examination of competitive reactions with ethidium bromide (EB), results showed that complexes can replace EB-bound DNA. In addition, a new crystal structure of the binuclear Cu(II) complex with S-substituted thiosalicylate derivative has been reported. In the present series of Cu(II) complexes the crystal structure is the first example of a complex comprising an S-aryl derivative of thiosalicylate ligand. Through comparative study of structural properties of six molecules from four crystal structures we examined the structural variations, potentially important for biological activity of these complexes.

Introduction. Elevated cardiac troponin gives excellent accuracy in the identification of myocardial damage in children, but it can also be elevated in a series of other diseases. Case report. We ...presented two children thirteen years of age with a high serum level of troponin-I after an acute episode of supraventricular tachycardia. We analyzed troponin- I levels in correlation with the maximum heart rate, duration of tachycardia and systolic left ventricular function (ejection fraction and fractional shortening). Conclusion. Abnormal troponin level can be seen in children with sustained supraventricular tachycardia and normal heart. Caution is advised in diagnosing cardiac dysfunction in children with supraventricular tachycardia and elevated troponin levels.

Background/Aim. Despite the widespread use of procalcitonin, C-reactive protein (CRP), and soluble CD14 subtype (sCD14-ST), their diagnostic accuracy in children with sepsis is not yet clear. The aim ...of the study was to establish and compare the diagnostic accuracy of procalcitonin, CRP, and sCD14-ST in children admitted to the hospital under suspicion of having sepsis. Methods. The study was designed as a retrospective cross-sectional study on children admitted to the Pediatrics Clinic in Kragujevac, Serbia, under suspicion of sepsis, during a 6-month period. Diagnostic accuracy was tested by the construction of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and their comparison in terms of area under the curve (AUC). Results. Procalcitonin had the largest AUC 0.75; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.63?0.88, followed by CRP (0.68; 95% CI 0.54?0.81) and sCD14-ST (0.65; 95% CI 0.52 ? 0.79). Differences between the areas under the ROC curves were not significant (CRP vs. procalcitonin z = 1.054, p = 0.291; CRP vs. sCD14-ST z = 0.238, p = 0.812; procalcitonin vs. sCD14-ST z = 1.089, p = 0.286). Conclusion. Our study showed relatively low sensitivity and moderate specificity of procalcitonin, C-reactive protein and sCD14-ST in diagnosing sepsis among children, as well as similar diagnostic accuracy of the three biomarkers.
Purpose: The aim of this research is to identify the most exposed business processes in the pandemic era and investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic affected these processes in the processing companies ...in Brod-Posavina County. Methodology: The questionnaire was sent electronically to the official e-mail addresses of 49 processing companies in Brod-Posavina County according to the FINA register. The questionnaire was filled in by 102 respondents from 35 processing companies. The survey included employees of companies with more than 3 years of work experience in the considered company who are employed in management, commercial, financial or technical positions. The study uses descriptive statistical analysis and multivariate factor analysis. Results: The most exposed business processes were selected. Based on respondent’s perceptions, research results confirm the exposure of all mentioned business processes to the coronavirus pandemic. “Work organization” and “commercial and financial area” are recognized as the most exposed business process and business area significantly exposed to the risk of unsustainability in Brod-Posavina County processing companies, respectively. Conclusion: The research findings confirmed the hypotheses of the paper, which propose that the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic had an impact on all business processes in processing companies and there was a business area significantly exposed to the risk of unsustainability in the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic. The identified business process and business area may serve as a basis for comparison in similar future cases.
Geopolymers have excellent physical and mechanical properties, so they can be used as a substitute for ordinary polymers. Geopolymers are ceramic materials, which exhibit the property of brittleness, ...which can be a limitation in some structural applications. To overcome this shortcoming, a new group of materials (organic geopolymers) was developed. The aim of this work is the synthesis of organic (hybrid) geopolymers. A geopolymer based on metakaolin was synthesized as a reference sample, while polyvinyl alcohol was added as an organic phase for synthesizing a hybrid geopolymer. It was concluded that the systems follow the rule of behavior in liquid systems. The chemical composition of the samples was determined by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Structural and phase characterization of hybrid and reference materials were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD)and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), which revealed new phases in the PVA-added samples. The results show that the content of added PVA in the reaction mixture affects the phase composition of the synthesized materials. To examine the possibility of adsorption of the samples, Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV/VIS) was used. The morphology was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), where efflorescence was observed and identified. After characterizing the geopolymer with the addition of PVA, we obtained a material that was far more porous than the basic sample, and we can conclude that we have synthesized a material that shows good mechanical properties.
The following investigation presents the thermal treatment of geopolymer at 300 °C, 600 °C and 900 °C. We investigated what happens to the geopolymer base when incorporated with 1% and 5% of ...neodymium in the form Nd
O
. A total of six samples were synthesized. Geopolymer 1 contained 1% and geopolymer 2 contained 5% Nd
O
, and these samples were treated at 300 °C; then, samples geopolymer 3 and geopolymer 4 also had the same percentage composition of Nd
O
and were treated at 600 °C, while samples geopolymer 5 and geopolymer 6were treated at 900 °C. Physical and chemical changes in the aluminosilicate geopolymer matrix were monitored. The incorporation of rare earths into the polymer network of aluminosilicates has been proven to disrupt the basic structure of geopolymers; however, with increased temperatures, these materials show even more unusual properties.
(DRIFT) analysis showed that the intensity of the vibrational band decreases with the increase in temperature during thermal treatment, suggesting alterations in the chemical structure of the geopolymers.
(TEM) analysis showed that the diameter of the nanoparticles containing Al
O
is in the range 5-10 nm, while larger crystallites range from 30 to 80 nm.
(SEM) analysis revealed that the temperature of the thermal treatment increases to 300 °C and 600 °C; the porosity of geopolymer increases in the form of the appearance of large pores and cracks in material.
(XPS) analysis was used to investigate the surface chemistry of geopolymers, including the chemical composition of the surface, the oxidation state of the elements, and the presence of functional groups. The UV/Vis spectra of the synthesized geopolymers doped with Nd
show interesting optical properties at 900 °C; the geopolymer matrix completely disintegrates and an amorphous phase with a rare-earth precipitate appears.
