To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ampicillin/sulbactam with those of clindamycin/gentamicin.
A prospective, randomized clinical trial of patients with the diagnosis of postpartum endometritis. ...Intravenous ampicillin, 2.0 g, combined with 1.0 g sulbactam was administered every six hours or intravenous clindamycin, 900 mg, plus gentamicin, 1.5 mg/kg (not to exceed 150 mg unless gentamicin levels were obtained) every eight hours. Endometrial and blood specimens were obtained for culture and antibiotic susceptibility testing.
One hundred twenty-nine hospitalized women with the diagnosis of endometritis were enrolled. Both treatment regimens were equally effective. At the end of treatment, 42 of 51 (82%) ampicillin/sulbactam-treated patients achieved clinical cure in comparison to 47 of 56 (84%) patients in the clindamycin/gentamicin group. Respective bacterial eradication rates of 86% and 84% for each treatment group were seen. Both antibiotic regimens were well tolerated, with no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse experiences.
The two antibiotic regimens were equally effective for a clinical cure, bacterial eradication and incidence of adverse experiences.

A total of 2210 modules were built to the tight tolerances and specifications required for the SCT. This was 234 more than the 1976 required and represents a yield of 93%. The component flow was at times tight, but the module production rate of 40–50 per week was maintained despite this. The distributed production was not found to be a major logistical problem and it allowed additional flexibility to take advantage of where the effort was available, including any spare capacity, for building the end-cap modules. The collaboration that produced the ATLAS SCT end-cap modules kept in close contact at all times so that the effects of shortages or stoppages at different sites could be rapidly resolved.
The lesion responsible for obscure gastrointestinal bleeding in the pediatric population may not be determined with standard primary endoscopic methods. Wireless capsule endoscopy, now a first-line ...modality for evaluation of the small bowel in the adult population, is a tool that may be useful among children. We report a case of a 2.5-year-old girl who presented with melenic stools. Upper and lower endoscopy, Meckel scans, and mesenteric angiography yielded negative results. Wireless capsule endoscopy identified numerous abnormal, dilated, blood vessels in the proximal jejunum, with associated fresh blood. The patient underwent surgical exploration, with resection of the affected portion of the jejunum. Pathologically, the dilated blood vessels were consistent with mixed, juvenile, capillary hemangioma-angiomatosis of developmental or congenital origin. The patient fared well postoperatively, with no additional bleeding in 9 months of follow-up monitoring. This case report highlights the use of capsule endoscopy in the diagnosis and successful treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding in a young infant. This is the youngest reported patient treated with the use of wireless capsule endoscopy in the pediatric population.
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in conjunction with the NASA Planetary Protection Officer, has selected vapor phase hydrogen peroxide (VHP) sterilization process for continued development as a ...NASA approved sterilization technique for spacecraft subsystems and systems. The goal was to include this technique, with an appropriate specification, in NASA Procedural Requirements 8020.12 as a low-temperature complementary technique to the dry heat sterilization process.
The VHP process is widely used by the medical industry to sterilize surgical instruments and biomedical devices, but high doses of VHP may degrade the performance of flight hardware, or compromise material compatibility. The goal for this study was to determine the minimum VHP process conditions for planetary protection acceptable microbial reduction levels.
Experiments were conducted by the STERIS Corporation, under contract to JPL, to evaluate the effectiveness of vapor hydrogen peroxide for the inactivation of the standard spore challenge,
Geobacillus stearothermophilus. VHP process parameters were determined that provide significant reductions in spore viability while allowing survival of sufficient spores for statistically significant enumeration. In addition to the obvious process parameters of interest: hydrogen peroxide concentration, number of injection cycles, and exposure duration, the investigation also considered the possible effect on lethality of environmental parameters: temperature, absolute humidity, and material substrate.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate long-term safety and efficacy of phentolamine mesylate, an orally active, rapid-acting alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist, for the treatment of men ...suffering from erectile dysfunction (ED). It was an open-label study involving more than 2000 patients. Men received phentolamine mesylate 40 mg or 80 mg (10 tablets/month) as needed for up to 13 months and self-assessed erectile performance using two validated questionnaires. Treatment with phentolamine mesylate was associated with increases in Erectile Function Domain score of the IIEF, successful vaginal penetrations, and in overall satisfaction. Most adverse events were mild or moderate in severity and consistent with the known pharmacodynamic properties of phentolamine. In conclusion, phentolamine mesylate is safe and effective in the long-term treatment of men with mild to moderate ED.
