We present a three-dimensional (3D) extinction map of the southern sky. The map covers the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) area of ∼14,000 deg2 and has spatial resolutions between 6 9 and 27′. Based ...on the multi-band photometry of SMSS, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer Survey, and the Gaia mission, we have estimated values of the r-band extinction for ∼19 million stars with the spectral energy distribution analysis. Together with the distances calculated from the Gaia data release 2 (DR2) parallaxes, we have constructed a 3D extinction map of the southern sky. By combining our 3D extinction map with those from the literature, we present an all-sky 3D extinction map, and use it to explore the 3D distribution of the Galactic dust grains. We use two different models, one consisting of a single disk and another of two disks, to fit the 3D distribution of the Galactic dust grains. The data is better fitted by a two-disk model, yielding smaller values of the Bayesian Information Criterion. The best-fit model has scale heights of 73 and 225 pc for the "thin" and "thick" dust disks, respectively.
Trans‐4‐Hydroxy‐l‐proline (trans‐Hyp) is a valuable chiral building block for the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates. Bioconversion of l‐proline using recombinant strain with ...proline‐4‐hydroxylase (P4H) is a preferred biocatalytic process in the economical production of trans‐Hyp. In this study, a recombinant E. coli overexpressing hydroxylase (P4H), γ‐glutamyl kinase and glutamate‐semialdehyde dehydrogenase (ProBA) genes were constructed by knocking out the key genes in the metabolism. These key genes contained putA encoding proline dehydrogenase (PutA) in the l‐proline metabolism and other catalytic enzyme genes, sucAB encoding α‐ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (SucAB), aceAK encoding isocitratelyase (AceA) and isocitrate dehydrogenase kinase/phosphatase (AceK) in the TCA cycle. This recombinant strain coupled the synthetic pathway of trans‐Hyp with TCA cycle of the host strain. It inhibited the consumption of l‐proline completely and promoted the accumulation of 2‐oxoglutarate (2‐OG) as a co‐substrate, which realized the highest conversion of glucose to trans‐Hyp. A fed‐batch strategy was designed, capable of producing 31·0 g l−1 trans‐Hyp from glucose. It provided a theoretical basis for commercial conversion of glucose to trans‐Hyp.
Significance and Impact of the Study:Trans‐4‐Hydroxy‐l‐proline (trans‐Hyp) is a valuable chiral building block for the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates. Unsatisfactory microbial bioconversion resulted in a low yield of trans‐Hyp. In this study, we blocked the unwanted blunting pathways of host strain and make the cell growth couple with the trans‐Hyp synthesis from glucose. Finally, a recombinant Escherichia coli with short‐cut and efficient trans‐Hyp biosynthetic pathway was obtained. It provided a theoretical basis for commercial production of trans‐Hyp.

Reverse chemical ecology based on insect functional odorant binding proteins has been extensively studied to screen behaviourally active compounds, whereas chemosensory proteins (CSPs), which are ...reportedly involved in olfactory chemical reception and could serve as molecular targets remain unclear. In the present study, two behaviourally active compounds for Cnaphalocrocis medinalis, a serious pest of rice in Asia, were successfully screened via an antenna‐biased CSP, CmedCSP33. Fluorescence competitive binding assays showed that CmedCSP33 could bind to seven out of 32 rice volatiles. Fluorescence quenching experiments revealed that CmedCSP33 forms a stable complex with nerolidol and β‐ionone, and circular dichroism (CD) spectra demonstrated that these two compounds cause conformational changes in CmedCSP33. Furthermore, H‐tube olfactometer bioassays showed that C. medinalis displayed prominent attractant responses to nerolidol and prominent repellent responses to β‐ionone. Additionally, binding assays and CD spectra at different pH values implied that extensive conformational changes may be a general feature of CSPs for triggering the subsequent chemical transduction. Overall, our findings provide evidence for the involvement of CSPs in olfactory perception, and a protocol for effectively screening behaviourally active compounds.
Abstract Distyly is a mechanism promoting cross‐pollination within a balanced polymorphism. Numerous studies show that the degree of inter‐morph sexual organ reciprocity ( SOR ) within species ...relates to its pollen‐mediated gene flow. Similarly, a lower interspecific SOR should promote interspecific isolation when congeners are sympatric, co‐blooming and share pollinators. In this comparative study, we address the significance of SOR at both intra‐ and interspecific levels. Seventeen allopatric and eight sympatric populations representing four Primula species ( P. anisodora , P. beesiana , P. bulleyana and P. poissonii ) native to the Himalaya‐Hengduan Mountains were measured for eight floral traits in both long‐ and short‐styled morphs. GLMM and spatial overlap methods were used to compare intra‐ and interspecific SOR . While floral morphology differed among four Primula species, SOR within species was generally higher than between species, but in species pairs P. poissonii / P. anisodora and P. beesiana / P. bulleyana , the SOR was high at both intra‐ and interspecific levels. We did not detect a significant variation in intraspecific SOR or interspecific SOR when comparing allopatric versus sympatric populations for all species studied. As intraspecific SOR increased, disassortative mating may be promoted. As interspecific SOR decreased, interspecific isolation between co‐flowering species pairs also may increase. Hybridisation between congeners occurred when interspecific SOR increased in sympatric populations, as confirmed in two species pairs, P. poissonii / P. anisodora and P. beesiana / P. bulleyana .
Pedicularis is the largest genus in the Orobanchaceae (>300) with many species co-occurring and co-blooming in subalpine to alpine meadows in the Himalayas. Although it is well known that different ...Pedicularis species place pollen on different parts of the same bumblebee's body, thus reducing interspecific pollen transfer, it is not known whether post-pollination components also contribute to reproductive isolation (RI). In this study, we quantified the individual strengths and absolute contributions of six pre- and post-pollination components of RI between three sympatric species in two pairs; Pedicularis gruina × Pedicularis tenuisecta (gru × ten) and Pedicularis comptoniifolia × Pedicularis tenuisecta (com × ten). All three Pedicularis species shared the same Bombus species. Individual foragers showed a high, but incomplete, floral constancy for each species. Therefore, pre-pollination barriers were potentially 'leaky' as Bombus species showed a low but consistent frequency of interspecific visitation. The RI strength of pre-pollination was lower in com × ten than in gru × ten. In contrast, post-pollination barriers completely blocked gene flow between both sets of species pairs. Two post-pollination recognition sites were identified. Late acting rejection of interspecific pollen tube growth occurred in com♀ × ten♂, while seeds produced in bi-directional crosses of gru × ten failed to germinate. We propose that, although floral isolation based on pollen placement on pollinators in the genus Pedicularis is crucial to avoid interspecific pollen transfer, the importance of this mode of interspecific isolation may be exaggerated. Post-pollination barriers may play even larger roles for currently established populations of co-blooming and sympatric species in this huge genus in the Himalayas.
In December 2019, novel coronavirus pneumonia epidemic occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, and spread rapidly across the country. In the early stages of the epidemic, China adopted the containment ...strategy and implemented a series of core measures around this strategic point, including social mobilization, strengthening case isolation and close contacts tracking management, blocking epidemic areas and traffic control to reduce personnel movements and increase social distance, environmental measures and personal protection, with a view to controlling the epidemic as soon as possible in limited areas such as Wuhan. This article summarizes the background, key points and core measures in the country and provinces. It sent prospects for future prevention and control strategies.
ABSTRACT
The repeating fast radio burst (FRB) source, FRB 20201124A, was found to be highly active in 2021 March and April. We observed the source with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope at ...1.36 GHz on 2021 April 9 and detected 20 bursts. A downward drift in frequency over time is clearly seen from the majority of bursts in our sample. A structure-maximizing dispersion measure (DM) search on the multicomponent bursts in our sample yields a DM of 411.6 ± 0.6 pc cm−3. We find that the rotation measure (RM) of the bursts varies around their weighted mean value of −601 rad m−2 with a standard deviation of 11.1 rad m−2. This RM magnitude is 10 times larger than the expected Galactic contribution along this line of sight (LoS). We estimate an LoS magnetic field strength of 4–6 µG, assuming that the entire host galaxy DM contributes to the RM. Further polarization measurements will help determine FRB 20201124A’s RM stability. The bursts are highly linearly polarized, with some showing signs of circular polarization, the first for a repeating FRB. Their polarization position angles (PAs) are flat across the burst envelopes and vary between bursts. We argue that the varying polarization fractions and PAs of FRB 20201124A are similar to known magnetospheric emission from pulsars, while the observed circular polarization, combined with the RM variability, is hard to explain with Faraday conversion. The high linear polarization fractions, flat PAs, and downward drift from FRB 20201124A bursts are similar to previous repeating sources, while the observed circular polarization is a newly seen behaviour among repeaters.
