Chirality is a fundamental property of electrons with the relativistic spectrum found in graphene and topological insulators. It plays a crucial role in relativistic phenomena, such as Klein ...tunneling, but it is difficult to visualize directly. Here, we report the direct observation and manipulation of chirality and pseudospin polarization in the tunneling of electrons between two almost perfectly aligned graphene crystals. We use a strong in-plane magnetic field as a tool to resolve the contributions of the chiral electronic states that have a phase difference between the two components of their vector wave function. Our experiments not only shed light on chirality, but also demonstrate a technique for preparing graphene's Dirac electrons in a particular quantum chiral state in a selected valley.
The worldwide burden of kidney disease is rising, but public awareness remains limited, underscoring the need for more effective communication by stakeholders in the kidney health community. Despite ...this need for clarity, the nomenclature for describing kidney function and disease lacks uniformity. In June 2019, Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) convened a Consensus Conference with the goal of standardizing and refining the nomenclature used in the English language to describe kidney function and disease, and of developing a glossary that could be used in scientific publications. Guiding principles of the conference were that the revised nomenclature should be patient-centered, precise, and consistent with nomenclature used in the KDIGO guidelines. Conference attendees reached general consensus on the following recommendations: (i) to use “kidney“ rather than “renal” or “nephro-” when referring to kidney disease and kidney function; (ii) to use “kidney failure” with appropriate descriptions of presence or absence of symptoms, signs, and treatment, rather than “end-stage kidney disease”; (iii) to use the KDIGO definition and classification of acute kidney diseases and disorders (AKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI), rather than alternative descriptions, to define and classify severity of AKD and AKI; (iv) to use the KDIGO definition and classification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) rather than alternative descriptions to define and classify severity of CKD; and (v) to use specific kidney measures, such as albuminuria or decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR), rather than “abnormal” or “reduced” kidney function to describe alterations in kidney structure and function. A proposed 5-part glossary contains specific items for which there was general agreement. Conference attendees acknowledged limitations of the recommendations and glossary, but they considered standardization of scientific nomenclature to be essential for improving communication.
We have carried out a cell-based screen aimed at discovering small molecules that activate p53 and have the potential to decrease tumor growth. Here, we describe one of our hit compounds, tenovin-1, ...along with a more water-soluble analog, tenovin-6. Via a yeast genetic screen, biochemical assays, and target validation studies in mammalian cells, we show that tenovins act through inhibition of the protein-deacetylating activities of SirT1 and SirT2, two important members of the sirtuin family. Tenovins are active on mammalian cells at one-digit micromolar concentrations and decrease tumor growth in vivo as single agents. This underscores the utility of these compounds as biological tools for the study of sirtuin function as well as their potential therapeutic interest.

Here we use organic geochemical climate-proxy data from the sediment record of Lake Chala (Kenya and Tanzania) to probe the stability of the link between hydroclimate and temperature over approximately the past 75,000 years, hence encompassing a sufficiently wide range of temperatures to test the 'dry gets drier, wet gets wetter' paradigm
of anthropogenic climate change in the time domain. We show that the positive relationship between effective moisture and temperature in easternmost Africa during the cooler last glacial period shifted to negative around the onset of the Holocene 11,700 years ago, when the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration exceeded 250 parts per million and mean annual temperature approached modern-day values. Thus, at that time, the budget between monsoonal precipitation and continental evaporation
crossed a tipping point such that the positive influence of temperature on evaporation became greater than its positive influence on precipitation. Our results imply that under continued anthropogenic warming, the Horn of Africa will probably experience further drying, and they highlight the need for improved simulation of both dynamic and thermodynamic processes in the tropical hydrological cycle.

We achieve typical distance uncertainties of ∼6% for APOGEE giants, ∼2% for APOGEE dwarfs, and extinction uncertainties of ∼0.07 mag, when all photometric information is available, and ∼0.17 mag if optical photometry is missing.

We complement this paper with distances and extinctions for stars in other public released spectroscopic surveys: 324 999 in GALAH DR2, 4 928 715 in LAMOST DR5, 408 894 in RAVE DR6, and 6095 in GES DR3.
In this paper, we describe an experiment in which the position of scientists with respect to flood risk management is fundamentally changed. Building on a review of three very different approaches to ...engaging the public in science, we contrast the normal way in which science is used in flood risk management in England and Wales with an experiment in which knowledge regarding flooding was co-produced. This illustrates a way of working with experts, both certified (academic natural and social scientists) and non-certified (local people affected by flooding), for whom flooding is a matter of concern, and where the event, flooding, is given agency in the experiment. We reveal a deep and distributed understanding of flood hydrology across all experts, certified and uncertified, involved in the experiment. This did not map onto the conventional dichotomy between 'universal' scientific expertise and 'local' lay expertise. By working with the event we harnessed, produced and negotiated a new and collective sense of knowledge, sufficient in our experiment to make a public intervention in flood risk management in our case-study location. The manner in which the academic scientists involved in the practice of their science were repositioned was radical as compared with normal scientific method. It was also radical for a more fundamental reason: the purpose of our experiment became as much about creating a new public capable of making a political intervention in a situation of impasse, as it was about producing the solution itself. The practice of knowledge generation, the science undertaken, worked with the hybridisation of science and politics rather than trying to extract science from it.
Despite improvements in therapy amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis, there are few studies comparing different regimens. Here we present a matched comparison with 69 patients in each cohort ...examining upfront therapy with cyclophosphamide, bortezomib and dexamethasone (CVD) vs cyclophosphamide, thalidomide and dexamethasone (CTD). On an intention-to-treat basis, the overall response rates were 71.0% vs 79.7% in the CVD and CTD arms, respectively, (P=0.32). A higher complete response (CR) rate was observed in the CVD arm (40.5%) vs CTD (24.6%), P=0.046. One-year overall survival (OS) was 65.2% and 66.7% for CVD and CTD, respectively (P=0.87). The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 28.0 and 14.0 m for CVD and CTD, respectively (P=0.039). In a landmark analysis assessing outcomes performed at 6 months, the CR rate with CVD was 59.6% vs 34.0% for CTD (P=0.03). The 1-year OS was 96% with CVD and 92% with CTD (P=0.40). The median PFS with CVD was not reached and was 19.2 m with CTD, P=0.028). In summary, both regimens are unable to overcome the high rate of early deaths in AL amyloidosis. However, CVD correlates with improved depth of response and superior PFS supporting its use in the frontline setting. Further optimisation and better supportive-care strategies are required to increase the proportion of patients fully benefiting from therapy.
We present a model of the northern Seychelles continental margin derived from controlled source, wide‐angle seismic traveltime inversion and teleseismic receiver functions. This margin has been ...widely cited as a classic example of rifting in association with a continental flood basalt province, the Deccan Traps. However, we do not find the typical set of geophysical characteristics reported at other margins linked to continental flood basalts, such as those of the north Atlantic. The oceanic crust formed immediately after breakup and throughout the first 3 Ma of seafloor spreading is just 5.2 km thick, less than half that typically seen at other volcanic margins. The continent‐ocean transition zone is narrow and while two packages of seaward‐dipping reflectors are imaged within this transition they are weakly developed. Beneath the thinned continental crust there is an approximately 4 km thick layer of high‐velocity material (7.5–7.8 km/s) that we interpret as mafic material intruded and underplating the lower crust. However, we believe that this underplating most likely happened prior to the breakup. Overall the observations show that the rifting of India from the Seychelles was characterized by modest magmatism. The spatial extent of the Deccan flood basalt province is therefore smaller than previously thought. We speculate that either the lateral flow of Deccan‐related hot material beneath the breakup region was hampered, perhaps as the rifted margins did not intersect the center of the Deccan source, or there was incomplete melt extraction from the wide melting region that formed between the rapidly diverging plates. If the latter explanation is correct, then the rate of plate separation, as indicated by the initial seafloor‐spreading rate, is more important in controlling the volume of magmatism generated during continental rifting than has been previously recognized.
