Cognitive rigidities have long been a serious concern in innovation research, such as disruptive innovation studies and not-invented-here syndrome studies. The existing literature, however, lacks a ...theoretical perspective and empirical evidence regarding why cognitive rigidities develop and how to deal with the problem. To address this paucity, this study investigates the role that research and development (R&D) personnel's adaptive expertise plays in coping with cognitive rigidities by analyzing its direct effect on career success and its path of influence through career adaptability. On the basis of a survey of 262 R&D personnel in South Korea, this study shows the direct effect of adaptive expertise on the career success of R&D personnel and the mediation effect of career adaptability on the relationship between the two variables. This research provides various theoretical and practical implications to cognitive rigidities in innovation studies, career development studies, and human resource management of R&D personnel.

To investigate tourism's positive influence on family relationships, existing literature has focused on "travel activities," ignoring the cognitive and emotional effects of travel experiences. This ...study adopts cognitive appraisal theory and memorable tourism experiences (MTEs) to examine emotional influences of rural travel on family cohesion. Based on a survey of 250 family tourists engaging in rural travel in South Korea, this study shows the MTEs' positive effect on family cohesion. The results also suggest that involvement has the strongest effect; arousal and meaningfulness have a similarly significant effect; novelty has a relatively weak effect; and refreshment has no significant effect.
Successful collaborations between university and industry (U–I) promise numerous mutual benefits. In order to realize these benefits, both parties need effective governance mechanisms to overcome ...organizational and cultural barriers. Until 2004 in Japan, national universities were government organizations, and as such, they were prevented from actively pursuing collaborations with industry. Under this restriction, U–I collaborations were established through informal interpersonal networks. Joint R&D projects were inherently small and seldom likely to generate concrete results for industry. After a series of institutional and organizational reforms by the Japanese government, universities and industries adopted a new strategic approach in the early 2000s to form inter‐organizational alliances. Based on the case of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, this paper analyzes how the inter‐organizational alliances are managed and investigates their impact on joint R&D projects, in comparison with the traditional interpersonal networks. Additional research indicates that most national and private universities adopt management schemes similar to those presented in the case study. The findings suggest that inter‐organizational U–I alliances, being equipped with contractual arrangements, organizational commitments, specialized coordination, and formal evaluation procedures, enable alliance partners to initiate more explorative research, to organize interdisciplinary projects with faculties in different research fields, and to establish larger‐scale R&D projects.
A dual‐band printed dipole array antenna for a wireless local area network (WLAN) application is presented. A radiation element consists of four pairs of printed dipoles, and two radiation elements ...are collinearly arrayed. A broadside coupling microstrip line‐based two‐sectional impedance transformer is used to feed the radiation elements in parallel. The proposed dual‐band antenna is designed to cover the dual‐frequency bands (2.4–2.48 and 5.15–5.825 GHz) which are the lower‐ and upper‐frequency bands for WLAN operation. The experimental results support the proposed design theory and also exhibit the gain values of 3.89–4.88 and 5.79–7.18 dBi at the lower‐ and upper‐bands, respectively, maintaining the omnidirectional radiation pattern. The measured radiation efficiencies at each frequency points, 2.4, 5.2, and 5.5 GHz are 87.39%, 75.43%, 69.96%, and 73.07% $ \% $, respectively. In addition, for mass production, the effect from a low‐cost flexible coaxial cable, and polyethylene housing on the antenna performance is also investigated in this letter.

The authors found that R&D personnel’s knowledge sharing has a significant effect on their job performance. Furthermore, social skills significantly moderate the relationship between knowledge sharing and job performance.
Originality/value
This study addresses the existing literature’s limited understanding of the process nature of creativity and innovation by examining knowledge sharing as a personal engagement in the innovation process, which has a positive effect on job performance. The study also casts new light on the importance of social skills in fortifying personal engagement in the innovation process. The overall results will prove valuable in the selection of effective R&D personnel and the design of competency development programs for R&D organizations.
For the demonstration of remote‐controllable actuators, a dendronized polymer (denpol) is newly designed and successfully synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of azobenzene‐based ...macromonomers. The incorporation of azobenzene mesogens into the denpols helps to construct finely tuned hierarchical superstructures with anisotropic physical properties and reversible photoisomerization. The polynorbornene backbones and azobenzene side chains in the uniaxially oriented films are aligned perpendicularly and parallel to the layer normal, respectively. Based on photoreversible actuation experiments combined with diffraction results, direct relationships between the chemical structures, hierarchical superstructures, and their corresponding photomechanical behaviors are proposed. Smart denpols possess great potential for practical applications in photoresponsive switches.
To demonstrate remote‐controllable actuators, a polynorbornene with dendronized azobenzene chromophores is synthesized by ring‐opening metathesis polymerization.
•This study distinguishes between structural and attitudinal professionalism.•Reconceptualization of attitudinal professionalism includes knowledge pursuance, self-management, sense of calling, and ...customer orientation.•This study empirically analyzes the positive impact of professional attitudes on employees’ self-confidence on both functional and interactive service quality.•This study discusses the values of forming professional attitudes for personal capability and service quality improvement of hotel organizations.
The professionalism of a workforce is critical for the development of the tourism and hospitality industry. This study addresses the issues of conceptual confusions in professionalism constructs and distinguishes the attitudinal dimensions of professionalism at the individual level from the structural aspects at the occupational level. This paper focuses on knowledge pursuance, self-management, sense of calling, and customer orientation as significant factors in the professional attitude of service providers and analyzes their impact on the service provider's service quality (SQ) efficacy. A survey analysis of frontline employees at hotels in Seoul, Korea, suggests that knowledge pursuance has a positive impact on the interactive SQ efficacy, while self-management orientation is positively related with functional SQ efficacy. More significantly, it shows that a sense of calling and customer orientation are essential professional attitudes, having a positive and significant impact on both functional and interactive SQ efficacy.
