One of the most puzzling problems of high temperature cuprate superconductor is the pseudogap phase (PG) at temperatures above the superconducting transition temperature in the underdoped regime. The ...PG phase is found by the angle-resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) to have a gap at some regions in momentum space and a fraction of Fermi surface remained, known as Fermi arcs. The arc turns into a d-wave SC gap with a node below the SC transition temperature. Here, by studying a strongly correlated model at low temperatures, we obtained a phase characterized by two kinds of pairing order parameters with the total momentum of the Cooper pair to be zero and finite. The finite momentum pairing is accompanied with a spatial modulation of pairing order, i.e. a pair density wave (PDW). These PDW phases are intertwined with modulations of charge density and intra-unit cell form factors. The coexistence of the two different pairing orders provides the unique two-gaps like spectra observed by ARPES for superconducting cuprates. As temperature raises, the zero-momentum pairing order vanishes while the finite momentum pairing orders are kept, thus Fermi arcs are realized. The calculated quasiparticle spectra have the similar doping and temperature dependence as reported by ARPES and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). The consequence of breaking symmetry between x and y due to the unidirectional PDW and the possibility to probe such a PDW state in the PG phase is discussed.

Authentic leadership can contribute to a good work environment. Burnout is a critical factor that affects nurses‧ intent to leave. The mediating roles of work environment and burnout on the relationship between authentic leadership and intent to leave is unclear.
Methods
A cross‐sectional design was used, and 946 nurses from three different levels of hospital (medical center, regional, and district), defined in terms of the number of beds and type of medical care provided, responded to four self‐report questionnaires.
Results
Work environment and burnout mediated the effect of authentic leadership on intent to leave among nurses. The mediating effects of burnout on authentic leadership was present both for junior (β = 0.073) and senior (β = 0.081) nurses.
Conclusion
Authentic leadership can affect nurses‧ intent to leave but the work environment and burnout are important mediators of this influence.
Implications for Nursing Management
Administrators should adopt authentic leadership practices and make efforts to improve the work environment and decrease burnout in order to decrease nurses‧ intent to leave.
We study the incommensurate charge ordered states in the t - t ′ - J model using the Gutzwiller mean field theory on large systems. In particular, we explore the properties of incommensurate charge ...modulated states referred to as nodal pair density waves (nPDW) in the literature. nPDW states intertwine site and bond charge order with modulated d-wave pair order, and are characterized by a nonzero amplitude of uniform pairing; they also manifest a dominant intra-unit cell d-density wave form factor. To compare with a recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study (Hamidian et al 2015 Nat. Phys. 12 150) of the cuprate superconductor BSCCO-2212, we compute the continuum local density of states (LDOS) at a typical STM tip height using the Wannier function based approach. By Fourier transforming Cu and O sub-lattice LDOS we also obtain bias-dependent intra-unit cell form factors and spatial phase difference. We find that in the nPDW state the behavior of form factors and spatial phase difference as a function of energy agrees remarkably well with the experiment.This is in contrast to commensurate charge modulated states, which we show do not agree with experiment. We propose that the nPDW states are good candidates for the charge density wave phase observed in the superconducting state of underdoped cuprates.
Abstract
In recent years, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have become an emerging area of focus when developing therapeutics hot spot residues of proteins are dominant against infections. Importantly, ...AMPs are produced by virtually all known living organisms and are able to target a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms, including viruses, parasites, bacteria and fungi. Although several studies have proposed different machine learning methods to predict peptides as being AMPs, most do not consider the diversity of AMP activities. On this basis, we specifically investigated the sequence features of AMPs with a range of functional activities, including anti-parasitic, anti-viral, anti-cancer and anti-fungal activities and those that target mammals, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. A new scheme is proposed to systematically characterize and identify AMPs and their functional activities. The 1st stage of the proposed approach is to identify the AMPs, while the 2nd involves further characterization of their functional activities. Sequential forward selection was employed to extract potentially informative features that are possibly associated with the functional activities of the AMPs. These features include hydrophobicity, the normalized van der Waals volume, polarity, charge and solvent accessibility—all of which are essential attributes in classifying between AMPs and non-AMPs. The results revealed the 1st stage AMP classifier was able to achieve an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value of 0.9894. During the 2nd stage, we found pseudo amino acid composition to be an informative attribute when differentiating between AMPs in terms of their functional activities. The independent testing results demonstrated that the AUCs of the multi-class models were 0.7773, 0.9404, 0.8231, 0.8578, 0.8648, 0.8745 and 0.8672 for anti-parasitic, anti-viral, anti-cancer, anti-fungal AMPs and those that target mammals, Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, respectively. The proposed scheme helps facilitate biological experiments related to the functional analysis of AMPs. Additionally, it was implemented as a user-friendly web server (AMPfun, http://fdblab.csie.ncu.edu.tw/AMPfun/index.html) that allows individuals to explore the antimicrobial functions of peptides of interest.
Optical super-resolution microscopy allows nanoscale imaging of protein molecules in intact biological tissues. However, it is still challenging to perform large volume super-resolution imaging for ...entire animal organs. Here we develop a single-wavelength Bessel lightsheet method, optimized for refractive-index matching with clarified specimens to overcome the aberrations encountered in imaging thick tissues. Tight junction proteins 1-3 (TJP1-3) are components of tight junctions that can link transmembrane proteins to the actin cytoskeleton, and their incidence directly correlates to metastasis. However, ...the role of the TJP family in bladder cancer has not been adequately evaluated. In this study, we evaluated the genetic changes, mRNA and protein expressions of the target genes of the TJP family in bladder cancer patients using online database and immunohistochemistry, respectively. We found that TJP1 was amplified in bladder cancer tissue and that the protein expression levels were significantly associated with age (p = 0.03), grade (p = 0.007), and stage (p = 0.011). We also examined the correlation between TJP1 and other high-frequency mutation genes using TIMER. TJP1 mRNA levels were positively correlated with TTN and RYR3 mRNA levels in bladder cancer tissue. Taken together, TJP1 expression is associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients with bladder cancer and can be a useful predictive biomarker for bladder cancer staging.
Vitamin D deficiency has become an important public health problem, however few studies have been conducted in subtropical countries, and the predictors of vitamin D deficiency in people with healthy ...renal function are unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with vitamin D deficiency in northern Taiwan.
The cross-sectional study was performed between August 2013 and August 2017, and included 3954 participants without chronic kidney disease (CKD) aged ≥30 years in northern Taiwan. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)-D levels, biochemistry, sociodemographic variables (age, sex, education, occupation) and lifestyle habits (tea, coffee consumption and physical activities) were recorded. Associations between vitamin D status and these variables were examined using a regression model. The definition of deficiency was defined as a serum 25(OH)-D level < 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L).
The mean 25(OH)-D concentration was 28.9 ng/mL, and 22.4% of the study population had vitamin D deficiency. There was a significantly higher vitamin D deficiency ratio in the women compared to the men (22.9% vs 9.9%, p < 0.001). Vitamin D deficiency was most prevalent (38.4%) in those aged 30-39 years. Those with a graduate degree had the highest rate of vitamin D deficiency (31.5%). The predictors of vitamin D deficiency included female sex, young age, high education level, living in an urban area and physical inactivity. Tea consumption was negatively associated with vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in subtropical areas such as northern Taiwan in healthy individuals without CKD.
Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) is the gold standard for assessment of treatment response in solid tumors. Morphologic change of tumor size evaluated by RECIST is often ...correlated with survival length and has been considered as a surrogate endpoint of therapeutic efficacy. However, the detection of morphologic change alone may not be sufficient for assessing response to new anti-cancer medication in all solid tumors. During the past fifteen years, several molecular-targeted therapies and immunotherapies have emerged in cancer treatment which work by disrupting signaling pathways and inhibited cell growth. Tumor necrosis or lack of tumor progression is associated with a good therapeutic response even in the absence of tumor shrinkage. Therefore, the use of unmodified RECIST criteria to estimate morphological changes of tumor alone may not be sufficient to estimate tumor response for these new anti-cancer drugs. Several studies have reported the low reliability of RECIST in evaluating treatment response in different tumors such as hepatocellular carcinoma, lung cancer, prostate cancer, brain glioma, bone metastasis, and lymphoma. There is an increased need for new medical imaging biomarkers, considering the changes in tumor viability, metabolic activity, and attenuation, which are related to early tumor response. Promising imaging techniques, beyond RECIST, include dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion-weight imaging (DWI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), and .sup.18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). This review outlines the current RECIST with their limitations and the new emerging concepts of imaging biomarkers in oncology.
C1GALT1 controls the crucial step of GalNAc-type O-glycosylation and is associated with both physiologic and pathologic conditions, including cancers. EPH receptors comprise the largest family of ...receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and modulate a diverse range of developmental processes and human diseases. However, the role of C1GALT1 in the signaling of EPH receptors remains largely overlooked. Here, we showed that C1GALT1 high expression in gastric adenocarcinomas correlated with adverse clinicopathologic features and is an independent prognostic factor for poor overall survival. Silencing or loss of C1GALT1 inhibited cell viability, migration, invasion, tumor growth and metastasis, as well as increased apoptosis and cytotoxicity of 5-fluorouracil in AGS and MKN45 cells. Phospho-RTK array and western blot analysis showed that C1GALT1 depletion suppressed tyrosine phosphorylation of EPHA2 induced by soluble Ephrin A1-Fc. O-glycans on EPHA2 were modified by C1GALT1 and both S277A and T429A mutants, which are O-glycosites on EPHA2, dramatically enhanced phosphorylation of Y588, suggesting that not only overall O-glycan structures but also site-specific O-glycosylation can regulate EPHA2 activity. Furthermore, depletion of C1GALT1 decreased Ephrin A1-Fc induced migration and reduced Ephrin A1 binding to cell surfaces. The effects of C1GALT1 knockdown or knockout on cell invasiveness in vitro and in vivo were phenocopied by EPHA2 knockdown in gastric cancer cells. These results suggest that C1GALT1 promotes phosphorylation of EPHA2 and enhances soluble Ephrin A1-mediated migration primarily by modifying EPHA2 O-glycosylation. Our study highlights the importance of GalNAc-type O-glycosylation in EPH receptor-regulated diseases and identifies C1GALT1 as a potential therapeutic target for gastric cancer.
One of the most puzzling facts about cuprate high-temperature superconductors in the lightly doped regime is the coexistence of uniform superconductivity and/or antiferromagnetism with many ...low-energy charge-ordered states in a unidirectional charge density wave or a bidirectional checkerboard structure. Recent experiments have discovered that these charge density waves exhibit different symmetries in their intra-unit-cell form factors for different cuprate families. Using a renormalized mean-field theory for a well-known, strongly correlated model of cuprates, we obtain a number of charge-ordered states with nearly degenerate energies without invoking special features of the Fermi surface. All of these self-consistent solutions have a pair density wave intertwined with a charge density wave and sometimes a spin density wave. Most of these states vanish in the underdoped regime, except for one with a large d-form factor that vanishes at approximately 19% doping of the holes, as reported by experiments. Furthermore, these states could be modified to have a global superconducting order, with a nodal-like density of states at low energy.
