The effect of oral Etoposide (VP‐16‐213) on the ovarian function in 22 patients with residual gestational trophoblastic disease was studied by serial weekly measurement of serum follicle stimulating ...hormone (FSH), 17β‐estradiol (E2), progesterone (P) and prolactin (PRL), and monitoring of the menstrual patterns during and after drug treatment. Multiple courses of VP‐16‐213 at a dosage of 200 mg/m2 × 5 days were given 1 week apart. Following an average dose of 5.0 gm, five young patients developed transient ovarian failure for a mean period of 2.4 months and two elderly patients developed permanent ovarian failure (total incidence, 7/22, 31.8%) as evidenced by hypergonadotropic, hypoestrogenic amenorrhea. In addition, two patients each developed anovulatory cycles and hypomenorrhea. VP‐16‐213 should therefore be regarded a potent gonadotoxic drug and these hitherto unreported side effects should be recognized when the drug is used in menstruating females.
The Sorting Intolerant from Tolerant (SIFT) algorithm predicts the effect of coding variants on protein function. It was first introduced in 2001, with a corresponding website that provides users ...with predictions on their variants. Since its release, SIFT has become one of the standard tools for characterizing missense variation. We have updated SIFT's genome-wide prediction tool since our last publication in 2009, and added new features to the insertion/deletion (indel) tool. We also show accuracy metrics on independent data sets. The original developers have hosted the SIFT web server at FHCRC, JCVI and the web server is currently located at BII. The URL is http://sift-dna.org (24 May 2012, date last accessed).
This study reports the case of a 42-year-old man who suffered a ruptured aneurysm of the anterior communicating artery. His memory capabilities were assessed after a considerable recovery period ...during which many of his memory deficits ameliorated. His scan revealed a left frontal lesion and many of his deficits were characteristic of frontal impairment. He was impaired on temporal discrimination, and he showed marked source forgetting. He also performed badly on the Brown-Peterson task, and we suggest that this is another task that may be characteristic of frontal impairment. In contrast, the patient showed normal or near normal performance on some memory tasks but not on others. It is concluded that the patient's frontal signs are similar to those found in Korsakoff's Syndrome, but that his memory impairment is qualitatively different from that encountered in patients with the amnesic syndrome.
This study examined the performance of temporal lobe and Korsakoff amnesic patients on two versions of the Brown-Peterson task. One version involved trials with distractor intervals ranging from ...three to 60 second. The other investigated the effects of massed versus distributed practice with a constant nine-second retention interval. Korsakoff patients produced significantly poorer performance on both versions of the task. Further analyses indicated that impaired Brown-Peterson performance was correlated with frontal dysfunction but not with the severity of the memory deficit. Previous inconsistencies concerning the performance of amnesic patients on the Brown-Peterson task are considered.
Building on Global Entrepreneurship Monitor research, this study examines the impact of specific norms supporting women's entrepreneurship on the relative rates of women to men engaged in ...entrepreneurship in different countries. These specific norms are themselves related to both a country's general support for entrepreneurship and its level of gender equality. Countries with higher overall levels of entrepreneurial activity also tended to evidence higher relative proportions of female participation. These findings are still seen when controlling for the substantial effect of countries’ economic development in shaping patterns of entrepreneurial activity.
