A previous publication has shown that the in-plane polarization (IPP) component of a polarized 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam in the COSY storage ring may acquire a polarization half-life in excess of 1000 ...s through a combination of beam bunching, electron cooling (prior to any spin manipulation), sextupole field adjustment, and a limitation of the beam intensity. This paper documents further tests pointing to additional gains in the IPP lifetime if cooling is active throughout the beam store.
Spin observables in proton deuteron breakup reactions at low energies offer a rich testing ground for the modern theory of nuclear forces, the chiral effective field theory (EFT). In the ...three-nucleon continuum the experimental data and the theoretical predictions are today at variance. At the PAX facility at COSY we plan to make an extensive study of analyzing powers and spin correlation parameters in pd breakup reactions at low energies between 30 and 50 MeV, an energy range where previous measurements are scarce and limited while three-nucleon effects are expected to be significant. Furthermore it is an ideal energy for the predictive power of chiral EFT to be tested. The longstanding physics question of the nature of three-nucleon forces will be studied with large coverage provided by an optimized silicon detector barrel, and flexibility utilizing the sampling method, a technique for direct comparison between experiment and theory developed specifically for the complex analysis of three-particle final states. The proposed experiment will yield an independent determination of the low-energy constants D and E and enable tests of appearing three-nucleon interactions in chiral EFT, with possible implications also for the spectra of light nuclei.
We report measurements of π+ and π0 meson photoproduction from longitudinally spin-polarised protons by an energy tagged (0.73-2.3 GeV) and linearly polarised photon beam. A close to complete solid ...angle coverage for the reaction products was provided by the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The double-polarisation observable G is extracted from Maximum Likelihood fits to the data, enabling the first accurate determination for the reaction γ→p→→π+n, while also significantly extending the kinematic coverage for γ→p→→π0p. This large data set provides an important constraint on the properties and spectrum of excited nucleon states decaying to Nπ in the mass range from 1.4 to 2.2 GeV, as well as for background (non-resonant) photoproduction processes. The considerable improvement achieved in the description of the observable G within the SAID and Bonn-Gatchina approaches after implementation of our data, illustrates that the partial-wave analyses now significantly extend the knowledge on Nπ photoproduction amplitudes at W>1.8 GeV. A partial-wave analysis using the new high-precision data set has a large impact on the extracted properties of high-spin nucleon excited states.
Results are presented for the first measurement of the double-polarization helicity asymmetry E for the η photoproduction reaction γp→ηp. Data were obtained using the FROzen Spin Target (FROST) with ...the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab, covering a range of center-of-mass energy W from threshold to 2.15 GeV and a large range in center-of-mass polar angle. As an initial application of these data, the results have been incorporated into the Jülich–Bonn model to examine the case for the existence of a narrow N⁎ resonance between 1.66 and 1.70 GeV. The addition of these data to the world database results in marked changes in the predictions for the E observable from that model. Further comparison with several theoretical approaches indicates these data will significantly enhance our understanding of nucleon resonances.
A multidimensional extraction of the structure function ratio σLT'/σ0 from the hard exclusive $\vec{e}$p → e'nπ+ reaction above the resonance region has been performed. The study was done based on ...beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The measurements focus on the very forward regime (t/Q2 $\ll$ 1) with a wide kinematic range of xB in the valence regime (0.17 < xB < 0.55), and virtualities Q2 ranging from 1.5 GeV2 up to 6 GeV2. The results and their comparison to theoretical models based on Generalized Parton Distributions demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd GPDs and the directly related tensor charge of the nucleon. In addition, the data is compared to an extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities. It was found that the Regge model provides a better description at low Q2, while the GPD model is more appropriate at high Q2.
In the framework of the FAIR project, the PAX collaboration has suggested new experiments using polarized antiprotons. The central physics issue is now to study the polarization build-up by spin ...filtering of antiprotons via multiple passages through an internal polarized gas target. The goals for spin-filtering experiments with protons at COSY are to test our understanding of the spin-filtering processes and to commission the setup for the AD experiments with antiprotons at the AD (CERN). Spin-filtering experiments with antiprotons at the AD will allow us to determine the total spin-dependent transversal and longitudinal cross sections. The low-beta section at COSY is composed of two superconducting quadrupole magnets on each side of the target, while at the AD, we will use three quadrupoles on each side. Technical problems and details of the superconducting quadrupoles with their respective cryogenics will be discussed. A flexible cryogenic system fitting at COSY and AD ring characterized by a low liquid helium consumption will be discussed. The status of the quadrupoles will be reported as well.
Based on the notion that the local dark-matter field of axions or axionlike particles (ALPs) in our Galaxy induces oscillating couplings to the spins of nucleons and nuclei (via the electric dipole ...moment of the latter and/or the paramagnetic axion-wind effect), we establish the feasibility of a new method to search for ALPs in storage rings. Based on previous work that allows us to maintain the in-plane polarization of a stored deuteron beam for a few hundred seconds, we perform a first proof-of-principle experiment at the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) to scan momenta near 970 MeV/c. This entails a scan of the spin-precession frequency. At resonance between the spin-precession frequency of deuterons and the ALP-induced electric dipole moment (EDM) oscillation frequency, there is an accumulation of the polarization component out of the ring plane. Since the axion frequency is unknown, the momentum of the beam and, consequently, the spin-precession frequency are ramped to search for a vertical polarization change that occurs when the resonance is crossed. At COSY, four beam bunches with different polarization directions are used to make sure that no resonance is missed because of the unknown relative phase between the polarization precession and the axion or ALP field. A frequency window of 1.5 kHz width around the spin-precession frequency of 121 kHz is scanned. We describe the experimental procedure and a test of the methodology with the help of a radio-frequency Wien filter located on the COSY ring. No ALP resonance is observed. As a consequence, an upper limit of the oscillating EDM component of the deuteron as well as its axion coupling constants are provided.

Several factors can contribute to the difficulty of aligning the sensors of tracking detectors, including a large number of modules, multiple types of detector technologies, and non-linear strip ...patterns on the sensors. The latter two of these three factors apply to the CLAS12 CVT, which is a hybrid detector consisting of planar silicon sensors with non-parallel strips, and cylindrical micromegas sensors with longitudinal and arc-shaped strips located within a 5 T superconducting solenoid. To align this detector, we used the Kalman Alignment Algorithm, which accounts for correlations between the alignment parameters without requiring the time-consuming inversion of large matrices. This is the first time that this algorithm has been adapted for use with hybrid technologies, non-parallel strips, and curved sensors. We present the results for the first alignment of the CLAS12 CVT using straight tracks from cosmic rays and from a target with the magnetic field turned off. After running this procedure, we achieved alignment at the level of 10μm, and the widths of the residual spectra were greatly reduced. These results attest to the flexibility of this algorithm and its applicability to future use in the CLAS12 CVT and other hybrid or curved trackers, such as those proposed for the future Electron-Ion Collider.
