Periodically, reviews of our knowledge of radar-wetland relationships and detection parameters have been provided by various authors. Since the publication of these works, additional research has ...been completed. Five major remote sensing journals spanning the years 1965-2007 formed the basis of this review. The vast majority of significant material found its way into these mainstream journals in one aspect or another. A short history of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)-wetlands discovery based on earlier reviews is followed by an update on radar-related wetland research. Although some trends emerged with regard to which wavelengths or polarizations to use, there was variation in optimum season/time of year and selection of multitemporal imagery. What is evident throughout the recent literature is that multidimensional radar data sets are attaining an accepted role in operational situations needing information on wetland presence, extent and conditions.
Phosphorus (P) remobilization in plants is required for continuous growth and development. The Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) inorganic phosphate (Pi) transporter Pht1;5 has been implicated in ...mobilizing stored Pi out of older leaves. In this study, we used a reverse genetics approach to study the role of Pht1;5 in Pi homeostasis. Under low-Pi conditions, Pht1; 5 loss of function (pht1; 5-1) resulted in reduced P allocation to shoots and elevated transcript levels for several Pi starvation-response genes. Under Pi-replete conditions, pht1;5-1 had higher shoot P content compared with the wild type but had reduced P content in roots. Constitutive overexpression of Pht1;5 had the opposite effect on Ñ distribution: namely, lower Ñ levels in shoots compared with the wild type but higher P content in roots. Pht1;5 overexpression also resulted in altered Pi remobilization, as evidenced by a greater than 2-fold increase in the accumulation of Pi in siliques, premature senescence, and an increase in transcript levels of genes involved in Pi scavenging. Furthermore, Pht1;5 overexpressors exhibited increased root hair formation and reduced primary root growth that could be rescued by the application of silver nitrate (ethylene perception inhibitor) or aminoethoxyvinylglycine (ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor), respectively. Together, these data indicate that Pht1;5 plays a critical role in mobilizing Pi from P source to sink organs in accordance with developmental cues and P status. The study also provides evidence for a link between Pi and ethylene signaling pathways.

A speech of then-Vice President Al Gore in 1998 created a vision for a Digital Earth, and played a role in stimulating the development of a first generation of virtual globes, typified by Google ...Earth, that achieved many but not all the elements of this vision. The technical achievements of Google Earth, and the functionality of this first generation of virtual globes, are reviewed against the Gore vision. Meanwhile, developments in technology continue, the era of “big data” has arrived, the general public is more and more engaged with technology through citizen science and crowd-sourcing, and advances have been made in our scientific understanding of the Earth system. However, although Google Earth stimulated progress in communicating the results of science, there continue to be substantial barriers in the public’s access to science. All these factors prompt a reexamination of the initial vision of Digital Earth, and a discussion of the major elements that should be part of a next generation.

. Spadin did not significantly inhibit either TREK-1 or TREK-2 currents either chemically activated by AA, BL-1249, or CDC, or structurally activated
a gating mutation. However, pre-exposure to spadin significantly perturbed the subsequent activation of TREK-1 currents by AA, but not TREK-2. Furthermore, spadin was unable to prevent activation of TREK-1 by BL-1249, CDC, or the related bioactive lipid, DHA. Spadin specifically antagonizes the activation of TREK-1 channels by AA, likely
an allosteric mechanism. Lack of intrinsic activity may explain the absence of clinical side effects during antidepressant therapy.
Basic foot care is a real need of people experiencing homelessness. To improve access to foot health for this group, three services structured to provide healthcare support for people experiencing ...homelessness collaborated in metropolitan Melbourne, Australia: an established nurse-led Homeless Persons Program (HPP), a specialty community health podiatry clinic servicing people experiencing homelessness, and a charity supporting disadvantaged communities providing free socks, foot first aid kits and second-hand footwear for distribution by nurses and podiatrists of participating services. This paper outlines the implementation and evaluation of this collaboration. A four stage implementation approach was used, addressing: 1. Who needs to do what differently? 2. What are the barriers and enablers that need to be addressed? 3. Which intervention components could overcome the modifiable barriers and enhance the enablers? 4. How can the changes be measured? The evaluation prospectively collected information about how HPP nurses referred adults to podiatry, and whether the referred individuals accessed the podiatry clinic, the outcomes of the podiatry visit, and how many received footwear, socks and foot first aid kits provided by the non-profit organisation. Over 1st June 2019 and 31st December 2020, 52 individuals were identified as adults who could potentially benefit from podiatry by the HPP nurses, of which 33 accessed podiatry. Those who did not visit the podiatry clinic were more likely to be born outside of Australia, live in more precarious housing (crisis accommodation and rough sleeping), have slightly more predisposing factors for homelessness, but have fewer medical, psychological and cognitive conditions. A structured approach including processes, education, regular, outreach to youth refuges and formal outcome monitoring enabled foot health care access in people experiencing homelessness. Further research is needed to ascertain how to support participants at risk of foot problems to access podiatry before their foot health issue reaches crisis point.
Study objective Although preoxygenation for emergency airway management is usually performed with nonrebreather face masks or bag-valve-mask devices, some clinicians also deliver supplemental ...high-flow oxygen by nasal cannula. We aim to measure the efficacy of supplemental nasal cannula oxygen delivery to conventional bag-valve-mask and nonrebreather face mask preoxygenation both with and without a simulated face mask leak. Methods We conducted a randomized crossover trial using healthy volunteers. We randomized subjects to preoxygenation with bag-valve-mask or nonrebreather face mask. In random sequence, subjects underwent 3-minute trials of preoxygenation with oxygen through mask alone at 15 L/min, oxygen through mask at 15 L/min with standardized leak, oxygen through mask at 15 L/min+oxygen through nasal cannula at 10 L/min, and oxygen through mask at 15 L/min+oxygen through nasal cannula at 10 L/min with standardized leak. The primary outcome was single-breath exhalation end-tidal oxygen ( eto2 ). We compared eto2 between preoxygenation modalities, using nonparametric techniques. Results We enrolled 60 subjects (30 nonrebreather face mask and 30 bag-valve-mask). In scenarios without a mask leak, eto2 was similar between bag-valve-mask and bag-valve-mask+nasal cannula (mean 79% versus 75%; difference –3%; 95% confidence interval CI –8% to 1%). In bag-valve-mask scenarios with a mask leak, eto2 was higher for bag-valve-mask+nasal cannula than bag-valve-mask alone (mean 66% versus 41%; difference 25%; 95% CI 21% to 29%). eto2 was higher for nonrebreather face mask+nasal cannula than nonrebreather face mask (mean 67% versus 52%; difference 15%; 95% CI 12% to 18%). In nonrebreather face mask scenarios with a mask leak, eto2 was higher for nonrebreather face mask+nasal cannula than nonrebreather face mask (mean 65% versus 48%; difference 17%; 95% CI 13% to 20%). Conclusion Although not aiding bag-valve-mask preoxygenation with a good mask seal, supplemental nasal cannula oxygen improved preoxygenation efficacy in the presence of a bag-valve-mask mask leak. Supplemental nasal cannula oxygen improved nonrebreather face mask preoxygenation both with and without a mask leak. Supplemental nasal cannula oxygen may be helpful for preoxygenation before emergency airway management.
Although the current guidelines for the management of blunt traumatic aortic injury (BTAI) have recommended intervention for grade 2 injuries or higher, a national trend has occurred for aggressive ...endovascular treatment of low-grade BTAIs. Little is known about the natural history of grade 1 and 2 injuries treated nonoperatively. We hypothesized that most of these low-grade injuries would remain stable with nonoperative management.
We performed a review of BTAIs at a large referral level 1 trauma center from 2004 to 2020. The injuries were graded using a standard 1 to 4 scale. The outcomes of the nonoperative and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) management strategies were compared, including post-trauma morbidity, mortality, reinterventions, and lesion stability.
A total of 176 patients with BTAIs and sufficient imaging studies and follow-up data available were identified during the study period, including 36 with grade 1, 24 with grade 2, 115 with grade 3, and 1 with a grade 4 injury. Of these 176 patients, 112 had undergone TEVAR and 64 had been treated nonoperatively. Most of the patients (90.2%) who had undergone TEVAR had had grade 3 injuries. Nonoperative management was performed for 97.2% of the grade 1 injuries and 62.5% of the grade 2 injuries. Endovascular reintervention after TEVAR was rare (2.7%). The rates of post-trauma morbidity within 30 days (stroke, 3.6% vs 3.1%; myocardial infarction/arrhythmia, 8.9% vs 1.6%; respiratory failure, 31.2% vs 28.1%; acute kidney injury, 9.8% vs 12.5%; urinary tract infection, 2.7% vs 4.8%; gastrointestinal bleeding, 3.6% vs 0.0%; pulmonary embolism, 10.9% vs 4.5%) and 1-year mortality after discharge (1.8% vs 3.1%) were comparable between the operative and nonoperative groups. The median follow-up was 1501 days (interquartile range IQR, 475.6-2804 days) for the TEVAR group and 1170.5 days (IQR, 317-2173 days) for the nonoperative group. No lesion progression had occurred in the patients with low-grade (grade 1-2) injuries managed nonoperatively. Resolution of grade 1 and 2 injury had occurred in 20% of the patients at 30 days, which had improved to 44% at long-term follow-up. Fourteen patients with grade 3 injuries (12.2% of the grade 3 injuries in our series) were also observed and did not require future intervention. These patients had generally had smaller pseudoaneurysms with minimal periaortic hematoma. None of these 14 patients had experienced progression or rupture during follow-up (median, 454.5 days; IQR, 81-1199 days) using computed tomography.
Nonoperative management of low-grade BTAIs did not result in long-term aortic complications or the need for reintervention. We found that grade 3 injuries with smaller pseudoaneurysms and minimal periaortic hematoma can be safely observed if the patients can be appropriately followed up. Thus, the indications for treatment of select grade 3 injuries merit further consideration.
Murine models of critical illness are commonly used to test new therapeutic interventions. However, these interventions are often administered at fixed time intervals after the insult, perhaps ...ignoring the inherent variability in magnitude and temporality of the host response. We propose to use wireless biotelemetry monitoring to define and validate criteria for acute deterioration and generate a physiology-based murine cecal ligation and puncture model that is more similar to the conduct of human trials of sepsis.

Mice underwent cecal ligation and puncture, and an HD-X11 wireless telemetry monitor (Data Sciences International) was implanted that enabled continuous, real-time measurement of heart rate, core temperature, and mobility. We performed a population-based analysis to determine threshold criteria that met face validity for acute physiologic deterioration. We assessed construct validity by temporally matching mice that met these acute physiologic deterioration thresholds with mice that had not yet met deterioration threshold. We analyzed matched blood samples for blood gas, inflammatory cytokine concentration, cystatin C, and alanine aminotransferase.
We observed that a 10% reduction in both heart rate and temperature sustained for greater than or equal to 10 minutes defined acute physiologic deterioration. There was significant variability in the time to reach acute deterioration threshold across mice, ranging from 339 to 529 minutes after cecal ligation and puncture. We found adequate construct validity, as mice that met criteria for acute deterioration had significantly worse shock, systemic inflammation (elevated tumor necrosis factor-α, p = 0.003; interleukin-6, p = 0.01; interleukin-10, p = 0.005), and acute kidney injury when compared with mice that had not yet met acute deterioration criteria.
We defined a murine threshold for acute physiologic deterioration after cecal ligation and puncture that has adequate face and construct validity. This model may enable a more physiology-based model for evaluation of novel therapeutics in critical illness.
