Grain filling is the physiological process for determining the obtainment of yield in cereal crops. The grain-filling characteristics of 50 maize brand hybrids released from 1964 to 2014 in China ...were assayed across multiple environments. We found that the grain-filling duration (54.46%) and rate (43.40%) at the effective grain-filling phase greatly contributed to the final performance parameter of 100-kernel weight (HKW). Meanwhile, along with the significant increase in HKW, the accumulated growing degree days (GDDs) for the actual grain-filling period duration (AFPD) among the selected brand hybrids released from the 1960s to the 2010s in China had a decadal increase of 23.41°C d. However, there was a decadal increase of only 19.76°C d for GDDs of the days from sowing to physiological maturity (DPM), which was also demonstrated by a continuous decrease in the ratio between the days from sowing to silking (DS) and DPM (i.e., from 53.24% in the 1960s to 49.78% in the 2010s). In contrast, there were no significant changes in grain-filling rate along with the release years of the selected hybrids. Moreover, the stability of grain-filling characteristics across environments also significantly increased along with the hybrid release years. We also found that the exotic hybrids showed a longer grain-filling duration at the effective grain-filling phase and more stability of the grain-filling characteristics than those of the Chinese local hybrids. According to the results of this study, it is expected that the relatively longer grain-filling duration, shorter DS, higher grain-filling rate, and steady grain-filling characteristics would contribute to the yield improvement of maize hybrids in the future.
The microbial profiles of peri-implantitis and periodontitis (PT) are inconclusive. The controversies mainly arise from the differences in sampling sites, targeted gene fragment, and microbiome ...analysis techniques. The objective of this study was to explore the microbiomes of peri-implantitis (PI), control implants (CI), PT and control teeth (CT), and the microbial change of PI after nonsurgical treatment (PIAT).
Twenty-two patients diagnosed with both PT and peri-implantitis were recruited. Clinical periodontal parameters and radiographic bone levels were recorded. In each patient, the subgingival and submucosal plaque samples were collected from sites with PI, CI, PT, CT, and PIAT. Microbiome diversity was analyzed by high-throughput amplicon sequencing using full-length of 16S rRNA gene by next generation sequencing.
The 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis revealed 512 OTUs in oral microbiome and 377 OTUs reached strain levels. The PI and PT groups possessed their own unique core microbiome. Treponema denticola was predominant in PI with probing depth of 8-10 mm. Interestingly, Thermovirga lienii DSM 17291 and Dialister invisus DSM 15470 were found to associate with PI. Nonsurgical treatment for peri-implantitis did not significantly alter the microbiome, except Rothia aeria.
Our study suggests Treponemas species may play a pivotal role in peri-implantitis. Nonsurgical treatment did not exert a major influence on the peri-implantitis microbiome in short-term follow-up. PT and peri-implantitis possess the unique microbiome profiles, and different therapeutic strategies may be suggested in the future.
Abstract Purpose The aim was to investigate the effects of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and compare the results with those of ...in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). Methods We analyzed our extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) results for patients who received ECPR for OHCA or IHCA in the last 5 years. Pre-arrest, resuscitation, and post-resuscitative data were evaluated. Results In the last 5 years, ECPR was used 230 times for OHCA ( n = 31) and IHCA ( n = 199). The basic demographic data showed significant differences in age, cardiomyopathy, and location of the initial CPR. Duration of ischemia was shorter in the IHCA group (44.4 ± 24.7 min vs. 67.5 ± 30.6 min, p < 0.05). About 50% of each group underwent a further intervention to treat the underlying etiology. ECMO was maintained for a shorter duration in the OHCA patients (61 ± 48 h vs. 94 ± 122 h, p < 0.05). Survival to discharge was similar in the two groups (38.7% for OHCA vs. 31.2% for IHCA, p > 0.05), as was the favorable outcome rate (25.5% for OHCA vs. 25.1% for IHCA, p > 0.05). Survival was acceptable (about 33%) in both groups when the duration of ischemia was no longer than 75 min. Conclusions In addition to having a beneficial effect in IHCA, ECPR can lead to survival and a positive neurological outcome in selected OHCA patients after prolonged resuscitation. Our results suggest that further investigation of the use of ECMO in OHCA is warranted.
Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells (iPSC-NPCs) are a promising source of tailor-made cell therapy for neurological diseases. However, major obstacles to clinical use still ...exist. To circumvent complications related to intracerebral administration, we implanted human iPSC-NPCs epidurally over the peri-infarct cortex 7 days after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion in adult rats. Compared to controls, cell-treated rats showed significant improvements in paretic forelimb usage and grip strength from 10 days post-transplantation (dpt) onwards, as well as reductions in lesion volumes, inflammatory infiltration and astrogliosis at 21 dpt. Few iPSC-NPCs migrated into rat peri-infarct cortices and exhibited poor survival in tissue. To examine the paracrine therapeutic mechanisms of epidural iPSC-NPC grafts, we used transmembrane co-cultures of human iPSC-NPCs with rat cortical cells subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation. Compared to other human stem cells, iPSC-NPCs were superior at promoting neuronal survival and outgrowth, and mitigating astrogliosis. Using comparative whole-genome microarrays and cytokine neutralization, we identified a neurorestorative secretome from iPSC-NPCs, and neutralizing enriched cytokines abolished neuroprotective effects in co-cultures. This proof-of-concept study demonstrates a relatively safe, yet effective epidural route for delivering human iPSC-NPCs, which acts predominately through discrete paracrine effects to promote functional recovery after stroke.
Wi-Fi-based person identification (PI) tasks are performed by analyzing the fluctuating characteristics of the Channel State Information (CSI) data to determine whether the person's identity is ...legitimate. This technology can be used for intrusion detection and keyless access to restricted areas. However, the related research rarely considers the restricted computing resources and the complexity of real-world environments, resulting in lacking practicality in some scenarios, such as intrusion detection tasks in remote substations without public network coverage. In this paper, we propose a novel neural network model named SimpleViTFi, a lightweight classification model based on Vision Transformer (ViT), which adds a downsampling mechanism, a distinctive patch embedding method and learnable positional embedding to the cropped ViT architecture. We employ the latest IEEE 802.11ac 80MHz CSI dataset provided by 1. The CSI matrix is abstracted into a special “image” after pre-processing and fed into the trained SimpleViTFi for classification. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SimpleViTFi has lower computational resource overhead and better accuracy than traditional classification models, reflecting the robustness on LOS or NLOS CSI data generated by different Tx-Rx devices and acquired by different monitors.
The microstructure, corrosion and cavitation erosion (CE) behaviors of the as-cast and four different heat treated nickel aluminum bronzes (NABs) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were investigated. The ...results show that after annealing, β′ transformed into the eutectoid microstructure, and more κIV precipitated from α. Less eutectoid microstructure and more β′ were obtained after normalizing. The quenched NAB mainly consisted of α and β′ phases, and fine, acicular α and κ phases precipitated inside β′ after subsequent aging. The largest proportion of the eutectoid microstructure, which underwent severe selective phase corrosion, was responsible for the lowest corrosion resistance of the annealed NAB. The quenched NAB possessed the most protective film and hence the highest corrosion resistance. The mechanical attack was primarily responsible for the CE damage for the as-cast, annealed and normarlized NABs. The quenched and quenched + aged NABs exhibited superior CE resistance because of the high hardness. The CE−corrosion synergy dominantly caused CE degradation, and it was largely attributed to corrosion-enhanced-CE.
The 3D measurement is widely required in modern industries. In this letter, a method based on the RGBD saliency detection with depth range adjusting (RGBD-DRA) is proposed for 3D measurement. By ...using superpixels and prior maps, RGBD saliency detection is utilized to detect and measure the target object automatically Meanwhile, the proposed depth range adjusting is processing while measuring to prompt the measuring accuracy further. The experimental results demonstrate the proposed method automatic and accurate, with 3 mm and 3.77% maximum deviation value and rate, respectively.
The ultrasound image segmentation is a crucial task in many clinical applications. However, the ultrasound image is difficult to segment due to image inhomogeneity caused by the ultrasound imaging ...technique. In this paper, to deal with image inhomogeneity with considering ultrasound image properties the Local Rayleigh Distribution Fitting (LRDF) energy term is introduced into the traditional level set method newly. While the curve evolution equation is derived for energy minimization, and self-driven uterus contour is achieved on the ultrasound images. The experimental segmentation results on synthetic images and in-vivo ultrasound images present that the proposed approach is effective and accurate, with the Dice Score Coefficient (DSC) of 0.95 ± 0.02.
