Context . In the context of charge-coupled devices (CCDs), the ultraviolet (UV) region has mostly remained unexplored after the 1990s. Gaia DR3 offers the community a unique opportunity to explore ...tens of thousands of asteroids in the near-UV as a proxy of the UV absorption. This absorption has been proposed in previous works as a diagnostic of hydration, organics, and space weathering. Aims . In this work, we aim to explore the potential of the NUV as a diagnostic region for primitive asteroids using Gaia DR3. Methods . We used a corrective factor over the blue part of Gaia spectra to erase the solar analog selection effect. We identified an artificial relation between the band noise and slope and applied a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) threshold for Gaia bands. Meeting the quality standards, we employed a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to compute the albedo threshold, maximizing primitive asteroid inclusion. Utilizing one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) projections, along with dimensionality-reduction methods (such as PCA and UMAP), we identified primitive asteroid populations. Results . We uncovered: (a) the first observational evidence linking UV absorption to the 0.7 µm band, tied to hydrated iron-rich phyllosilicates; and (b) a 2D space revealing a split in C-type asteroids based on spectral features, including UV absorption. The computed average depth (3.5 ± 1.0 %) and center (0.70 ± 0.03 µm) of the 0.7 µm absorption band for primitive asteroids observed with Gaia is in agreement with the literature values. Conclusions . In this paper, we shed light on the importance of the UV absorption feature to discriminate among different mineralogies (i.e., iron-rich phyllosilicates vs. iron-poor) or to identify taxonomies that are conflated in the visible (i.e., F-types vs. B-types). We have shown that this is a promising region for diagnostic studies of the composition of primitive asteroids.
We present deep imaging observations, orbital dynamics, and dust-tail model analyses of the double-component asteroid P/2016 J1 (J1-A and J1-B). The observations were acquired at the Gran Telescopio ...Canarias (GTC) and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) from mid-March to late July of 2016. A statistical analysis of backward-in-time integrations of the orbits of a large sample of clone objects of P/2016 J1-A and J1-B shows that the minimum separation between them occurred most likely ∼2300 days prior to the current perihelion passage, i.e., during the previous orbit near perihelion. This closest approach was probably linked to a fragmentation event of their parent body. Monte Carlo dust-tail models show that those two components became active simultaneously ∼250 days before the current perihelion, with comparable maximum loss rates of ∼0.7 and ∼0.5 kg s−1, and total ejected masses of 8 × 106 and 6 × 106 kg for fragments J1-A and J1-B, respectively. Consequently, the fragmentation event and the present dust activity are unrelated. The simultaneous activation times of the two components and the fact that the activity lasted 6-9 months or longer, strongly indicate ice sublimation as the most likely mechanism involved in the dust emission process.
Context. Icy dwarf planets are key for studying the chemical and physical states of ices in the outer solar system. The study of secular and rotational variations gives us hints of the processes that ...contribute to the evolution of their surface. Aims. The aim of this work is to search for rotational variability on the surface composition of the dwarf planet (136472) Makemake Methods. We observed Makemake in April 2008 with the medium-resolution spectrograph ISIS, at the William Herschel Telescope (La Palma, Spain) and obtained a set of spectra in the 0.28−0.52 μm and 0.70−0.95 μm ranges, covering 82% of its rotational period. For the rotational analysis, we organized the spectra in four different sets corresponding to different rotational phases, and after discarding one with low signal to noise, we analyzed three of them that cover 71% of the surface. For these spectra we computed the spectral slope and compared the observed spectral bands of methane ice with reflectances of pure methane ice to search for shifts of the center of the bands, related to the presence of CH4/N2 solid solution. Results. All the spectra have a red color with spectral slopes between 20%/1000 Å and 32%/1000 Å in accordance with previously reported values. Some variation in the spectral slope is detected, pointing to the possibility of a variation in the surface content or the particle size of the solid organic compound. The absorption bands of methane ice present a shift toward shorter wavelengths, indicating that methane (at least partially) is in solid solution with nitrogen. There is no variation within the errors of the shifts with the wavelength or with the depth of the bands, so there is no evidence of variation in the CH4/N2 mixing ratio with rotation. By comparing with all the available data in the literature, no secular compositional variations between 2005 and 2008 is found.
ABSTRACT
We aim to determine the distribution of basaltic asteroids (classified as V-types) based on the spectrophotometric data reported in the MOVIS-C catalogue. A total of 782 asteroids were ...identified. The observations with all four filters (Y, J, H, Ks), available for 297 of these candidates, allow a reliable comparison with the laboratory data of howardite, eucrite, and diogenite meteorites. We found that the majority of the basaltic candidates (≈95${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) are located in the inner main belt, while only 29 (≈4${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) and 8 (≈1${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) are located in the middle (MMB) and outer main belt (OMB), respectively. A fraction of ≈33${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ from the V-type candidates is associated with the Vesta family (with respect to AstDyS). We also identified four MMB V-type candidates belonging to (15) Eunomia family, and another four low inclination ones corresponding to (135) Hertha. We report differences between the colour indices and albedo distributions of the V-type candidates located in the inner main belt compared to those from the MMB and OMB. These results support the hypothesis of a different origin for the basaltic asteroids with a semimajor axis beyond 2.5 au. Furthermore, lithological differences are present between the vestoids and the inner low inclination basaltic asteroids. The data allow us to estimate the unbiased distribution of basaltic asteroids across the main asteroid belt. We highlight that at least 80${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the ejected basaltic material from (4) Vesta is missing or is not yet detected because it is fragmented in sizes smaller than 1 km.
Pluto and Eris are icy dwarf planets with nearly identical sizes, comparable densities and similar surface compositions as revealed by spectroscopic studies. Pluto possesses an atmosphere whereas ...Eris does not; the difference probably arises from their differing distances from the Sun, and explains their different albedos. Makemake is another icy dwarf planet with a spectrum similar to Eris and Pluto, and is currently at a distance to the Sun intermediate between the two. Although Makemake's size (1,420 ± 60 km) and albedo are roughly known, there has been no constraint on its density and there were expectations that it could have a Pluto-like atmosphere. Here we report the results from a stellar occultation by Makemake on 2011 April 23. Our preferred solution that fits the occultation chords corresponds to a body with projected axes of 1,430 ± 9 km (1σ) and 1,502 ± 45 km, implying a V-band geometric albedo p(V) = 0.77 ± 0.03. This albedo is larger than that of Pluto, but smaller than that of Eris. The disappearances and reappearances of the star were abrupt, showing that Makemake has no global Pluto-like atmosphere at an upper limit of 4-12 nanobar (1σ) for the surface pressure, although a localized atmosphere is possible. A density of 1.7 ± 0.3 g cm(-3) is inferred from the data.
Context. The near-Earth asteroid (3200) Phaethon is an intriguing object: its perihelion is at only 0.14 au and is associated with the Geminid meteor stream. Aims. We aim to use all available ...disk-integrated optical data to derive a reliable convex shape model of Phaethon. By interpreting the available space- and ground-based thermal infrared data and Spitzer spectra using a thermophysical model, we also aim to further constrain its size, thermal inertia, and visible geometric albedo. Methods. We applied the convex inversion method to the new optical data obtained by six instruments and to previous observations. The convex shape model was then used as input for the thermophysical modeling. We also studied the long-term stability of Phaethon’s orbit and spin axis with a numerical orbital and rotation-state integrator. Results. We present a new convex shape model and rotational state of Phaethon: a sidereal rotation period of 3.603958(2) h and ecliptic coordinates of the preferred pole orientation of (319°, −39°) with a 5° uncertainty. Moreover, we derive its size (D = 5.1 ± 0.2 km), thermal inertia (Γ = 600 ± 200 J m–2 s–1/2 K–1), geometric visible albedo (pV = 0.122 ± 0.008), and estimate the macroscopic surface roughness. We also find that the Sun illumination at the perihelion passage during the past several thousand years is not connected to a specific area on the surface, which implies non-preferential heating.
Context. Dynamical and albedo properties suggest that asteroids in cometary orbits (ACOs) are dormant or extinct comets. Their study provides new insights for understanding the end-states of comets ...and the size of the comet population. Aims. We intend to study the visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral properties of different ACO populations and compare them to the independently determined properties of comets. Methods. We select our ACOs sample based on published dynamical criteria and present our own observational results obtained using the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), the 4.2 m William Herschel Telescope (WHT), the 3.56 m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), and the 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), all located at the El Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain), and the 3.0 m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), located at the Mauna Kea Observatory, in Hawaii. We include in the analysis the spectra of ACOs obtained from the literature. We derive the spectral class and the visible and NIR spectral slopes. We also study the presence of hydrated minerals by studying the 0.7 μm band and the UV-drop below 0.5 μm associated with phyllosilicates. Results. We present new observations of 17 ACOs, 11 of them observed in the visible, 2 in the NIR and 4 in the visible and NIR. We also discuss the spectra of 12 ACOs obtained from the literature. All but two ACOs have a primitive-like class spectrum (X or D-type). Almost 100% of the ACOs in long-period cometary orbits (Damocloids) are D-types. Those in Jupiter family comet orbits (JFC-ACOs) are ∼60% D-types and ∼40% X-types. The mean spectral slope S′ of JFC-ACOs is 9.7 ± 4.6%/1000 Å and for the Damocloids this is 12.2 ± 2.0%/1000 Å. No evidence of hydration on the surface of ACOs is found from their visible spectra. The spectral slope and spectral class distribution of ACOs is similar to that of comets. Conclusions. The spectral taxonomical classification and the spectral slope distribution of ACOs, and the lack of spectral features indicative of the presence of hydrated minerals on their surface, strongly suggest that ACOs are likely dormant or extinct comets.
Context. Basaltic asteroids (spectrally classified as V-types) are believed to be fragments of large differentiated bodies. The majority of them are found in the inner part of the asteroid belt, and ...are current or past members of the Vesta family. Recently, some V-type asteroids have been discovered far from the Vesta family supporting the hypothesis of the presence of multiple basaltic asteroids in the early solar system. The discovery of basaltic asteroids in the outer belt challenged the models of the radial extent and the variability of the temperature distribution in the early solar system. Aims. We aim to identify new basaltic V-type asteroids using near-infrared colors of ~40 000 asteroids observed by the VHS-VISTA survey and compiled in the MOVIS-C catalogue. We also want to study their near-infrared colors and to study the near-infrared color distribution of the Vesta dynamical family. Methods. We performed a search in the MOVIS-C catalogue of all the asteroids with (Y−J) and (J−Ks) in the range (Y−J) ≥ 0.5 and (J−Ks) ≤ 0.3, associated with V-type asteroids, and studied their color distribution. We have also analyzed the near-infrared color distribution of 273 asteroid members of the Vesta family and compared them with the albedo and visible colors from WISE and SDSS data. We determined the fraction of V-type asteroids in the family. Results. We found 477 V-type candidates in MOVIS-C, 244 of them outside the Vesta dynamical family. We identified 19 V-type asteroids beyond the 3:1 mean motion resonance, 6 of them in the outer main belt, and 16 V-types in the inner main belt with proper inclination ip ≤ 3.0°, well below the inclination of the Vesta family. We computed that ~85% of the members of the Vesta dynamical family are V-type asteroids, and only 1–2% are primitive class asteroids and unlikely members of the family. Conclusions. This work almost doubles the sample of basaltic asteroid candidates in regions outside the Vesta family. Spectroscopic studies in the near-infrared and dynamical studies are needed to confirm their basaltic composition and to determine their origin.
Aims. We analyse a significantly large sample of spectroscopic data to provide a compositional characterization of the near-Earth asteroid population. We present visible and near-infrared spectra of ...a total of 74 near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) and Mars-crossers (MCs), covering the wavelength region from 0.5 to 2.5 μm. Using spectra of NEAs from other databases to enlarge our sample, and compiling two comparison samples of main belt asteroids (MBs) and ordinary chondrites (OCs), we analyse a total of 79 NEAs, 91 MBs, and 103 OCs. Methods. We obtained our visible and near-infrared spectra using the instruments and the telescopes located at “El Roque de los Muchachos” Observatory, in the island of La Palma (Spain). We compute several diagnostic spectral parameters from the reflectance spectra of NEAs, MBs, and OCs, that are used to infer the mineralogical composition. The distribution of the obtained values are analysed in 2 different parameter spaces. We also apply a robust statistical method based on neuronal networks to those spectral parameters, to compare the NEAs with OCs. Space weathering effects and dynamical and physical properties of NEAs and MBs are also studied. Results. Compositional differences between MBs and NEAs are inferred from the mineralogical analysis. The most remarkable results are: (1) the high olivine content of the NEAs; (2) the compositional similarity between NEAs and a small group of meteorites, the LL ordinary chondrites; and (3) that NEAs are not compositionally similar to OCs, implying that they are not the most likely parent bodies of those meteorites, as has been widely believed. To explain their apparently fresh surfaces (NEAs are on average less red than MBs), a combination of composition and size distribution (NEAs have diameters of some kilometres) should be invoked. Dynamical models applied to our sample of NEAs indicate that most of them originate in the inner part of the main belt, as expected.
ABSTRACT
The near-Earth objects with low-Jovian Tisserand invariant (TJ) represent about 9 per cent of the known objects orbiting in the near-Earth space, being subject of numerous planetary ...encounters and large temperature variations. We aim to make a spectral characterization for a large sample of NEOs with TJ ≤ 3.1. Consequently, we can estimate the fraction of bodies with a cometary origin. We report new spectral observations for 26 low-TJ NEOs. The additional spectra, retrieved from different public data bases, allowed us to perform the analysis over a catalogue of 150 objects. We classified them with respect to Bus-DeMeo taxonomic system. The results are discussed regarding their orbital parameters. The taxonomic distribution of low-TJ NEOs differs from the entire NEOs population. Consequently, TJ ∼ 3 can act as a composition border too. We found that 56.2 per cent of low-TJ NEOs have comet-like spectra and they become abundant (79.7 per cent) for TJ ≤ 2.8. 16 D-type objects have been identified in this population, distributed on orbits with an average TJ = 2.65 ± 0.6. Using two dynamical criteria, together with the comet-like spectral classification as an identification method and by applying an observational bias correction, we estimate that the fraction of NEOs with a cometary nature and H ∈ (14, 21) mag has the lower and upper bounds (1.5 ± 0.15) and (10.4 ± 2.2) per cent. Additionally, our observations show that all extreme cases of low-perihelion asteroids (q ≤ 0.3 au) belong to S-complex.
