Human infections with zoonotic coronaviruses (CoVs), including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV, have raised great public health concern ...globally. Here, we report a novel bat-origin CoV causing severe and fatal pneumonia in humans.
We collected clinical data and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens from five patients with severe pneumonia from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, Hubei province, China. Nucleic acids of the BAL were extracted and subjected to next-generation sequencing. Virus isolation was carried out, and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic trees were constructed.
Five patients hospitalized from December 18 to December 29, 2019 presented with fever, cough, and dyspnea accompanied by complications of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Chest radiography revealed diffuse opacities and consolidation. One of these patients died. Sequence results revealed the presence of a previously unknown β-CoV strain in all five patients, with 99.8% to 99.9% nucleotide identities among the isolates. These isolates showed 79.0% nucleotide identity with the sequence of SARS-CoV (GenBank NC_004718) and 51.8% identity with the sequence of MERS-CoV (GenBank NC_019843). The virus is phylogenetically closest to a bat SARS-like CoV (SL-ZC45, GenBank MG772933) with 87.6% to 87.7% nucleotide identity, but is in a separate clade. Moreover, these viruses have a single intact open reading frame gene 8, as a further indicator of bat-origin CoVs. However, the amino acid sequence of the tentative receptor-binding domain resembles that of SARS-CoV, indicating that these viruses might use the same receptor.
A novel bat-borne CoV was identified that is associated with severe and fatal respiratory disease in humans.
The integration of Fe dopant and interfacial FeOOH into Ni‐MOFs Fe‐doped‐(Ni‐MOFs)/FeOOH to construct Fe−O−Ni−O−Fe bonding is demonstrated and the origin of remarkable electrocatalytic performance of ...Ni‐MOFs is elucidated. X‐ray absorption/photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculation results indicate that Fe‐O−Ni−O−Fe bonding can facilitate the distorted coordinated structure of the Ni site with a short nickel–oxygen bond and low coordination number, and can promote the redistribution of Ni/Fe charge density to efficiently regulate the adsorption behavior of key intermediates with a near‐optimal d‐band center. Here the Fe‐doped‐(Ni‐MOFs)/FeOOH with interfacial Fe−O−Ni−O−Fe bonding shows superior catalytic performance for OER with a low overpotential of 210 mV at 15 mA cm−2 and excellent stability with ≈3 % attenuation after a 120 h cycle test. This study provides a novel strategy to design high‐performance Ni/Fe‐based electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline media.
Iron doping and FeOOH decorating leads to interfacial Fe−O−Ni−O−Fe bonding in Fe‐doped‐(Ni‐MOF)/FeOOH. This interfacial bonding can regulate the active Ni site to give the appropriate adsorption behavior of intermediates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, Fe‐doped‐(Ni‐MOF)/FeOOH shows outstanding catalytic performance with low overpotential, small Tafel slope, and high durability.
Global smartphone penetration has led to unprecedented addictive behaviors. The aims of this study are to develop diagnostic criteria of smartphone addiction and to examine the discriminative ability ...and the validity of the diagnostic criteria.
We developed twelve candidate criteria for characteristic symptoms of smartphone addiction and four criteria for functional impairment caused by excessive smartphone use. The participants consisted of 281 college students. Each participant was systematically assessed for smartphone-using behaviors by psychiatrist's structured diagnostic interview. The sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of the candidate symptom criteria were analyzed with reference to the psychiatrists' clinical global impression. The optimal model selection with its cutoff point of the diagnostic criteria differentiating the smartphone addicted subjects from non-addicted subjects was then determined by the best diagnostic accuracy.
Six symptom criteria model with optimal cutoff point were determined based on the maximal diagnostic accuracy. The proposed smartphone addiction diagnostic criteria consisted of (1) six symptom criteria, (2) four functional impairment criteria and (3) exclusion criteria. Setting three symptom criteria as the cutoff point resulted in the highest diagnostic accuracy (84.3%), while the sensitivity and specificity were 79.4% and 87.5%, respectively. We suggested determining the functional impairment by two or more of the four domains considering the high accessibility and penetration of smartphone use.
The diagnostic criteria of smartphone addiction demonstrated the core symptoms "impaired control" paralleled with substance related and addictive disorders. The functional impairment involved multiple domains provide a strict standard for clinical assessment.
Porous CoFe2O4/C NRAs supported on nickel foam@NC (denoted as NF@NC‐CoFe2O4/C NRAs) are directly fabricated by the carbonization of bimetal–organic framework NRAs grown on NF@poly‐aniline(PANI), and ...they exhibit high electrocatalytic activity, low overpotential, and high stability for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media.
Background
The Immunoscore was initially established to evaluate the prognosis of stage I/II/III colorectal cancer patients. However, the feasibility of the Immunoscore for the prognosis of ...colorectal cancer liver metastases (CRCLM) has not been reported.
Methods
Liver metastases in 249 CRCLM patients were retrospectively analyzed. The Immunoscore was assessed according to the counts and densities of CD3+ and CD8+ T cells in the central- and peritumoral areas by immunohistochemistry. The prognostic role of the Immunoscore for relapse–free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) was analyzed with Kaplan–Meier curves and Cox multivariate models, and confirmed via an internal validation. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to compare the prognostic values of the Immunoscore and the clinical risk score (CRS) system.
Results
CRCLM patients with high Immunoscores (> 2) had significantly longer RFS median RFS (95% confidence interval; 95% CI) 21.4 (7.8–35.1) vs. 8.7 (6.8–10.5) months,
P
< 0.001 and OS median OS (95% CI): not reached vs. 28.7 (23.2–34.2) months,
P
< 0.001 than those with low Immunoscores (≤ 2). After stratification by CRS, the Immunoscore retained a statistically significant prognostic value for OS. The areas under the ROC curves (AUROCs) of the Immunoscore and the CRS system for RFS were 0.711 95% CI 0.642–0.781 and 0.67595% CI 0.601–0.749 (
P
= 0.492), whereas the AUROC of the Immunoscore system for OS was larger than that of the CRS system 0.759 (95% CI 0.699–0.818) vs. 0.660 (95% CI 0.592–0.727);
P
= 0.029.
Conclusions
The Immunoscore of liver metastases can be applied to predict the prognosis of CRCLM patients following liver resection.
The aim of this study was to develop a self-administered scale based on the special features of smartphone. The reliability and validity of the Smartphone Addiction Inventory (SPAI) was demonstrated.
...A total of 283 participants were recruited from Dec. 2012 to Jul. 2013 to complete a set of questionnaires, including a 26-item SPAI modified from the Chinese Internet Addiction Scale and phantom vibration and ringing syndrome questionnaire. There were 260 males and 23 females, with ages 22.9 ± 2.0 years. Exploratory factor analysis, internal-consistency test, test-retest, and correlation analysis were conducted to verify the reliability and validity of the SPAI. Correlations between each subscale and phantom vibration and ringing were also explored.
Exploratory factor analysis yielded four factors: compulsive behavior, functional impairment, withdrawal and tolerance. Test-retest reliabilities (intraclass correlations = 0.74-0.91) and internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.94) were all satisfactory. The four subscales had moderate to high correlations (0.56-0.78), but had no or very low correlation to phantom vibration/ringing syndrome.
This study provides evidence that the SPAI is a valid and reliable, self-administered screening tool to investigate smartphone addiction. Phantom vibration and ringing might be independent entities of smartphone addiction.
The intrinsic activity of NiFe layer double hydroxides (LDHs) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) suffers from its predominantly exposed (003) basal plane, which is thought to have poor activity. ...Herein, we construct a hierarchal structure of NiFe LDH nanosheet-arrays-on-microplates (NiFe NSAs-MPs) to elevate the electrocatalytic activity of NiFe LDHs for the OER by exposing a high-activity plane, such as the (012) edge plane. It is surprising that the NiFe NSAs-MPs show activity of 100 mA cm
−2
at an overpotential (
η
) of 250 mV, which is five times higher than that of (003) plane-dominated NiFe LDH microsheet arrays (NiFe MSAs) at the same
η
, representing the excellent electrocatalytic activity for the OER in alkaline media. Besides, we analyzed the OER activities of the (003) basal plane and the (012) and (110) edge planes of NiFe LDHs by density functional theory with on-site Coulomb interactions (DFT+U), and the calculation results indicated that the (012) edge plane exhibits the best catalytic performance among the various crystal planes because of the oxygen coordination of the Fe site, which is responsible for the high catalytic activity of NiFe NSAs-MPs.
The (012) edge plane of NiFe layer double hydroxides (LDHs) has been proven to be a highly active plane for water oxidation.
Interfaces play a decisive role in perovskite solar cells’ power conversion efficiency and their long‐term durability. Small‐molecule hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) have grabbed enormous ...attention due to their structural flexibility, material properties, and stabilities, allowing for improved operational durability in perovskite photovoltaics. This study synthesizes and investigates a new class of benzimidazole‐based small molecules, named YJS001 and YJS003, serving as the HTMs to enable high‐efficiency mixed‐cation mixed‐halide perovskite solar cells. The benzimidazole‐based materials are dopant‐free HTMs composed of donor and acceptor building blocks that are designed to engineer the energy level alignment near the HTM/perovskite interface. Mixed‐cation mixed‐halide perovskites can be grown uniformly on both HTMs with large crystalline grains. It is discovered that the donor‐rich YJS003‐based solar cell exhibits a high open‐circuit voltage of 1.09 V with a champion power conversion efficiency of over 20%. Power‐dependent current–voltage characteristics of the solar cells are analyzed, from which the high performance of YJS003's excellent hole mobility and well‐aligned energy level is attributed. This work introduces a new class of benzimidazole‐based small molecules as HTMs, that paves the path for dopant free interface material development for commercialization of perovskite solar cells.
Two new hole‐transporting materials (HTMs) with acceptor‐rich (YJS001) and donor‐rich (YJS003) are synthesized and characterized for hybrid perovskite photovoltaics applications. Under similar conditions, the efficiency of HTM YJS001 and YJS003‐based devices is 17.43% and 20.81%, respectively. The superior performance of YJS003 over YJS001 is attributed to higher open‐circuit voltage and fill factor from good hole transport, lower trap density, and lower electric resistance of cells.
Abstract
Combining dynamical models with statistical algorithms is an important way to improve weather and climate prediction. In this study, a concept of a perfect model, whose solutions are from ...observations, is introduced, and a dynamical-statistical-analog ensemble forecast (DSAEF) model is developed as an initial-value problem of the perfect model. This new analog-based forecast model consists of the following three steps: (i) construct generalized initial value (GIV), (ii) identify analogs from historical observations, and (iii) produce an ensemble of predictands. The first step includes all appropriate variables, not only at an instant state but also during their temporal evolution, that play an important role in determining the accuracy of each predictand. An application of the DSAEF model is illustrated through the prediction of accumulated rainfall associated with 21 landfalling typhoons occurring over South China during the years of 2012–16. Assuming a reliable forecast of landfalling typhoon track, two different experiments are conducted, in which the GIV is constructed by including (i) typhoon track only; and (ii) both typhoon track and landfall season. Results show overall better performance of the second experiment than the first one in predicting heavy accumulated rainfall in the training sample tests. In addition, the forecast performance of both experiments is comparable to the operational numerical weather prediction models currently used in China, the United States, and Europe. Some limitations and future improvements as well as comparisons with some existing analog ensemble models are also discussed.
Permafrost on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) has undergone degradation as a result of recent climate change. This may alter the thermo‐hydrological processes and unlock soil organic carbon, and ...thereby affect local hydrological, ecological, and climatic systems. The relationships between permafrost and climate change have received extensive attention, and in this paper we review climate change for permafrost regions of the QTP over the past 30 years. We summarize the current state and changes in permafrost distribution and thickness, ground temperature, and ground ice conditions. We focus on changes in permafrost thermal state and in active‐layer thickness (ALT). Possible future changes in ground temperature and ALT are also discussed. Finally, we discuss the changes in hydrological processes and to ecosystems caused by permafrost degradation. Air temperature and ground temperature in the permafrost regions of the QTP have increased from 1980 to 2018, and the active layer has been thickening at a rate of 19.5 cm per decade. The response of permafrost to climate change is not as fast as in some reports, and permafrost degradation is slower than projected by models that do not account for conditions deep in permafrost.
