A precision test of lepton flavour universality has been performed by measuring the ratio RK of kaon leptonic decay rates K+→e+ν and K+→μ+ν in a sample of 59 813 reconstructed K+→e+ν candidates with ...(8.71±0.24)% background contamination. The result RK=(2.487±0.013)×10−5 is in agreement with the Standard Model expectation.
The production of charged pions in minimum bias p+C interactions is studied using a sample of 377000 inelastic events obtained with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS at 158 GeV/c beam momentum. The ...data cover a phase space area ranging from 0 to 1.8 GeV/c in transverse momentum and from -0.1 to 0.5 in Feynman xF. Inclusive invariant cross sections are given on a grid of 270 bins per charge, thus offering for the first time a dense coverage of the projectile hemisphere and of the cross-over region into the target fragmentation zone.
In order to cope with the harsh environment expected from the high luminosity LHC, the CMS forward muon system requires an upgrade. The two main challenges expected in this environment are an ...increase in the trigger rate and increased background radiation leading to a potential degradation of the particle ID performance. Additionally, upgrades to other subdetectors of CMS allow for extended coverage for particle tracking, and adding muon system coverage to this region will further enhance the performance of CMS.
Following an extensive R&D program, CMS has identified triple-foil gas electron multiplier (GEM) detectors as a solution for the first muon station in the region 1.6<|η|<2.2, while continuing R&D is ongoing for additional regions.
