This article explores how members of parliament (MPs) from minority backgrounds in Serbia and Kosovo use institutional incentives to perform as elected minority representatives. In contrast to the ...previous research that has viewed political agents as simply being acted upon or reactive, this article develops a less deterministic view of the effects of electoral incentives on political agents. It argues for a more dynamic analysis that focuses on the ways in which political actors mobilise institutions for strategic purposes.
The collapse of socialist economic system in Croatia was followed by a period of economic transition during which the industry sector was affected by major changes. This study, on an example of ...Central Croatia, analyzes the spatial aspect of these changes between 1990 and 2011. The used data were taken from the National Bureau of Statistics and studies in which the transition period industry is researched from economic and geographical point of view. Calculations of most indicators referred to a county level while some indicators were calculated at the level of administrative cities and municipalities. It was found that, in Central Croatia, there had come to a process of deindustrialization, and in some rare cases a process of reindustrialization, an increase in importance of tertiary and quaternary activities, and calculation of some indicators such as degree of industrialization, location quotient, regional factor and index of specialization indicated on the existence of significant differences between individual parts of Central Croatia.
Globally, the COVID-19 pandemic altered adults’ and children’s lifestyles and habits, causing an increase in body weight. Adolescents are sensitive to habit changes and, because of their insufficient ...capacity to deal with the unexpected COVID-19 changes, were at greater risk of noncommunicable disease development due to the consequences of adopting unhealthy habits. The survey aimed to reveal the changes in nutritional status and lifestyle habits of school children in Croatia and to assess their nutrition knowledge and emotional state and feelings about COVID-19 lockdown. Self-reported data from 1370 school children aged 10 to 15 years were obtained to examine the influence of the lockdown on their nutritional status, lifestyle and emotional status, and to assess their nutrition knowledge. The study revealed that the COVID-19 lockdown has caused an increase in the proportion of overweight and obesity among Croatian school children who changed their lifestyle habits towards being less physically active, spending more time using screen-based media and revealing potential psychological distress. However, the schoolchildren had a high adherence to the Mediterranean diet assessed with the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for children and adolescents KIDMED index and had good nutrition knowledge. Public health programs promoting a healthy lifestyle and involving the whole family, in a school environment, could provide children with a healthy adulthood.
We have genotyped 44 fishes caught in the wild (Novigrad Sea, Croatia) using 11 microsatellite tetranucleotide markers. They were divided in two groups and after natural mass spawning, we selected ...500 offspring for genotyping following their labelling with electronic tags. All fish in the parental group could be identified based on unique genotypes, and a significant number of private alleles, the alleles found only in one fish, greatly facilitated subsequent parent-offspring assignments. The majority of potential parents left no progeny, while just six of them generated over 70 %. Such highly skewed reproduction success, observed also in other studies, can quickly lead to a highly inbred population in just a few selection cycles. This kind of genetic analysis is helpful for planning of future selective breeding, where faster progress will be made possible based on the soon to be completed sea bass genome sequence.
In this symposium, Alessandro Ferrara’s recent book The Democratic Horizon: Hyperpluralism and the Renewal of Political Liberalism – an attempt to expand the framework of Rawls’ political liberalism ...in order to enable it to meet the challenge of today’s hyperpluralism – is discussed from a variety of angles by four contributors. Among the themes addressed are the potential of political liberalism for grounding a critical attitude; the different potential for accommodation offered by political liberalism for religious and moral, as opposed to economic, pluralism; Rawls’ implicit understanding of truth; the prospects of true democracy in ethnically divided societies that embrace consociationalist and particularly consensualist forms of governance; and the proper role of human rights in paths from decency to democracy from the perspective of an expanded political liberalism. In the final section, Alessandro Ferrara replies to his critics and accepts some of their suggestions.
This paper primarily sought to determine the overall satisfaction with the quality of life of foreign students in the City of Zagreb who, as participants in higher education mobility, come to study ...at the University of Zagreb. The paper defines the following terms: student mobility, exchange programmes (Erasmus+, CEEPUS and bilateral agreements) as well as prerequisites for the development of mobility. Part of the paper deals with the concept of quality of life of exchange students, including an analysis of some challenges they encounter during mobility, but also the advantages and positive aspects of coming to the University of Zagreb. The case study in which the City of Zagreb is presented in this analysis is based on a survey of foreign students to determine satisfaction with the quality of life in Zagreb, or whether there are significant geographical differences in their responses, given which area (region) of Europe they come from. The results of this research could be used in the creation of strategic documents and documents on international mobility and activity plans of higher education institutions regarding foreign students involved in student exchange in Croatia. Keywords: bilateral agreement; CEEPUS; Erasmus survey research.
This article examines the opinions, viewpoints and attitudes of a number of undergraduate and graduate university students of geography (Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb) on Croatian ...politics, how they experience it and in what manner they comment on certain political events. The research was carried out on a sample of 173 students which makes 64% of the number of geography students at the University. The survey results demonstrate that the student population, although representing Croatia's future intellectual force, shows no considerable interest in politics and that their engagement, participation in political parties as well as involvement in political processes are at a very low level.
