By using the method of planar dynamical systems to a nonlinear variant of the phi-four equation, the existence of smooth and nonsmooth solitary wave (so called peakon and valleyon) and infinite many ...periodic wave solutions is shown. Under different regions of parametric spaces, various sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of above solutions are given. The formulas to compute the travelling waves are also educed.
•Since the first imported case was confirmed in Hong Kong on January 23, 2020, local public interventions for SARS-CoV-2 control and prevention have been enhanced.•A regression model is adopted to ...quantify the association between the confirmation delay and the calendar time, validated by a Cox proportional hazard model.•We estimate that the SARS-CoV-2 confirmation efficiency improved 5.40% (95%CI: 2.54%−8.33%) per day in Hong Kong.•The sustaining enforcement in timely confirmation and other effective control measures are recommended to prevent the spreading of the SARS-CoV-2 infection.
The emerging virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), caused a large outbreak of coronavirus disease, COVID-19, in Wuhan, China, since December 2019. COVID-19 soon spread to other regions of China and overseas. In Hong Kong, local mitigation measures were implemented since the first imported case was confirmed on January 23, 2020. Here we evaluated the temporal variation of detection delay from symptoms onset to laboratory confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 in Hong Kong.
A regression model is adopted to quantify the association between the SARS-CoV-2 detection delay and calendar time. The association is tested and further validated by a Cox proportional hazard model.
The estimated median detection delay was 9.5 days (95%CI: 6.5−11.5) in the second half of January, reduced to 6.0 days (95%CI: 5.5−9.5) in the first half of February 2020. We estimate that SARS-CoV-2 detection efficiency improved at a daily rate of 5.40% (95%CI: 2.54−8.33) in Hong Kong.
The detection efficiency of SARS-CoV-2 was likely being improved substantially in Hong Kong since the first imported case was detected. Sustaining enforcement in timely detection and other effective control measures are recommended to prevent the SARS-CoV-2 infection.
In December 2019, novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) hit Wuhan, Hubei Province, China and spread to the rest of China and overseas. The emergence of this virus coincided with the Spring Festival ...Travel Rush in China. It is possible to estimate the total number of COVID-19 cases in Wuhan, by 23 January 2020, given the cases reported in other cities/regions and population flow data between Wuhan and these cities/regions. We built a model to estimate the total number of COVID-19 cases in Wuhan by 23 January 2020, based on the number of cases detected outside Wuhan city in China, with the assumption that cases exported from Wuhan were less likely underreported in other cities/regions. We employed population flow data from different sources between Wuhan and other cities/regions by 23 January 2020. The number of total cases in Wuhan was determined by the maximum log likelihood estimation and Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) weight. We estimated 8 679 (95% CI: 7 701, 9 732) as total COVID-19 cases in Wuhan by 23 January 2020, based on combined source of data from Tencent and Baidu. Sources of population flow data impact the estimates of the total number of COVID-19 cases in Wuhan before city lockdown. We should make a comprehensive analysis based on different sources of data to overcome the bias from different sources.
Genital Herpes, which is caused by Herpes Simplex Virus-1 or -2 (HSV-1, -2, predominantly HSV-2) is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that causes a chronic latent infection with outbreak ...episodes linked to transmission. Antiviral therapies are effective in reducing viral shedding during these episodes, but are ineffective as a whole since many outbreaks are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. Thus, the development of a vaccine for genital herpes is needed to control this disease. The question of how to implement such a vaccine program is an important one, and may be similar to the vaccination program for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) for young females. We have developed a mathematical model to describe the epidemiology of vaccination targeting young females against HSV-2. The model population is delineated with respect to age group, sexual activity and infection status including oral infection of HSV-1, which may affect vaccine efficacy. A threshold parameter R(C), which determines the level of vaccine uptake needed to eradicate HSV-2, is found. Computer simulation shows that an adolescent-only vaccination program may be effective in eliminating HSV-2 disease, however, the success of extinction greatly depends on the level of vaccine uptake, the vaccine efficacy, the age of sexual maturity and safe sex practices. However, the time course of eradication would take many years. We also investigate the prevalence of infection in the total population and in women between 16-30 years of age before and after vaccination has been introduced, and show that the adolescent-only vaccination program can be effective in reducing disease prevalence in these populations depending on the level of vaccine uptake and vaccine efficacy. This will also result in a decrease of maternal-fetal transmission of HSV-2 infection. Another important, if commonsense, conclusion is that vaccination of some females reduces infection in men, which then reduces infection in women.
In this study, some properties of a novel Halanay-type inequality that simultaneously contains impulses and delayed impulses are investigated. Two concepts with respect to average impulsive gain are ...proposed to describe hybrid impulsive strength and hybrid delayed impulsive strength. Then, using the obtained results, two stability criteria are derived for the linear systems with impulses and delayed impulses. It is found that the stability of impulsive systems is robust with respect to delayed impulses of which the magnitude strength is relatively small. Whereas, if the impulse strength is small, the time-delayed impulses can also promote the stability of unstable systems. Two numerical examples are employed to illustrate the efficiency of our results.
Summary
In this paper, the stability problems of a class of switched systems with limiting average dwell time (ADT) are concerned. The common ADT is improved to a form of limit, and the limiting ADT ...even can be infinite. Different from previous results, in order to take full advantage of stabilizing switchings, switching‐dependent switched parameters are first used to describe the relationship of two consecutive activated switchings. Then, stability criteria of switched systems with limiting ADT are established, which are less conservative comparing with the existing results. Additionally, some stability criteria of switched systems including continuous‐time and discrete‐time cases are derived. Finally, the validity and effectiveness of our results are elucidated by numerical examples.
Malaria is one of the most important parasitic infections in humans and more than two billion people are at risk every year. To understand how the spatial heterogeneity and extrinsic incubation ...period (EIP) of the parasite within the mosquito affect the dynamics of malaria epidemiology, we propose a nonlocal and time-delayed reaction-diffusion model. We then define the basic reproduction ratio graphic removed and show that graphic removed serves as a threshold parameter that predicts whether malaria will spread. Furthermore, a sufficient condition is obtained to guarantee that the disease will stabilize at a positive steady state eventually in the case where all the parameters are spatially independent. Numerically, we show that the use of the spatially averaged system may highly underestimate the malaria risk. The spatially heterogeneous framework in this paper can be used to design the spatial allocation of control resources.
In this article, we propose a practicable quantized sampled velocity data coupling protocol for synchronization of a set of harmonic oscillators. The coupling protocol is designed in a quantized way ...via interconnecting the velocities encoded by a uniform quantizer with a zooming parameter in either a fixed or an adjustable form over a directed communication network. By constructing a suitable norm to measure the convergence of the synchronization errors, we establish sufficient conditions for the networked harmonic oscillators to converge to a bounded neighborhood of the synchronized orbits with a fixed zooming parameter. The oscillators are ensured to achieve synchronization by designing the quantized coupling protocol with an adjustable zooming parameter. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed coupling protocols.
This paper investigates the global stabilization problem of k-valued logical control networks (KVLCNs) via event-triggered control (ETC), where the control inputs only work at several certain ...individual states. Compared with traditional state feedback control, the designed ETC approach not only shortens the transient period of logical networks but also decreases the number of controller executions. The content of this paper is divided into two parts. In the first part, a necessary and sufficient criterion is derived for the event-triggered stabilization of KVLCNs, and a construction procedure is developed to design all time-optimal event-triggered stabilizers. In the second part, the switching-cost-optimal event-triggered stabilizer is designed to minimize the number of controller executions. A labeled digraph is obtained based on the dynamic of the overall system. Utilizing this digraph, we formulate a universal and unified procedure called the minimal spanning in-tree algorithm to minimize the triggering event set. Furthermore, we illustrate the effectiveness of obtained results through several numerical examples.
